  • Thank you so much for tuning in to our 10th Q&A of the KAL! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday of the KAL!
Enter the pattern giveaway by leaving your name idea for this little weekly segment in the comments below! The giveaway will close this Sunday - 5/16/21 at midnight EST :)
In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. Thank you so much for all the information, I really appreciate it. I have knitted lots of sweaters in my life but the only thing I don’t enjoy are knitting the sleeves. Would you be able to let me know the easiest way to knit sleeves? Thank you so much.
    2. When I started knitting and discovered the hand dyed yarn I bought a lot of it, specially singles. Would you make summer garments from this yarn or just shawls l? Love to hear your advice!
    3. Will there will an accessories KAL (cowls/hats/etc) soon? Pretty please?
    4. What made you move to Maine? Has it been a good move for you as a designer & with your business? Do you have any favorite shops or places that you like to visit or knit at?
    5. I would love to hear you talk about stranded colorwork. You have some gorgeous patterns using this technique. Could you share some tips? Suggestions? Any help for someone with no experience in this type of knitting would be greatly appreciated.

How about just calling it "The Weekender" It is at the end of the week. We can all see the weekender sweater in the background, and we all associate that name with you as a designer. I really enjoy these episodes of good advice.
    All the best

I love that the hat is a swatch. I bought extra skeins for my spark cardigan and am getting ready to start swatching for it when I read that you can use the hat as your swatch. I hope in the future if you continue to do a series of themes in all garment types you’ll do the hat as a swatch again.

...and by the way, I love that you wear a different knit design each week! You get to see them in such greater detail ...especially your older designs. It’s also fun when you talk about a favorite ________ (fill in the blank- related to knitting- stitch, tool, wool soap, podcast, notions- anything really). Just some thoughts about the highlights of your podcast that I love! Great work and thank you for sharing your time and talents😊💖🙌

My avoidance of sleeve island is strong - what I've done in the past is split for the sleeves (on a top-down sweater) and continued for about an inch under the arms, then put the body on hold. I'll knit one sleeve, then the other at that point - which also saves the hassle and bulk of heaving around a whole sweater body if you're knitting sleeves at the end :) If I'm working bottom-up, I'll do 2-at-a-time sleeves to make all the increases line up exactly, and it seems to take less time and you'll have two exact matches when you're done!

My thoughts on naming this web series: because it is already popular, and people know it as Q&A, why not simply name it "Q&A with DRK"? It rhymes, it's short and snappy, and it's already identifiable with you. I'm so happy you are going to continue with this insightful and inspiring content!

I'm really enjoying these weekly visits!
I thought I'd mention a few places you might enjoy seeing in my home state of Maine (I now live in northern NH, but it's just as beautiful!).
Not sure if you've discovered Wolfe's Neck State Park in Freeport, but it's a gorgeous spot hidden in the inlets of Casco Bay. Great place to take kiddos for exploring, and an amazing spot for photos.
Reid State Park in Georgetown or Popham State Park in Phippsburg are both excellent beaches to visit. There's Fort Popham further down the road that's interesting for exploring.
As far as hiking spots- there's lots of great options that are a bit of a drive from you ( an hour or two) that are worth the trip- Western Maine in the Bethel area has lots of trails that are both easy and more challenging, some of which are also part of the Appalachian Trail. There's also Bradbury Mountain in Freeport as well which is great hiking with kids and has some beautiful views. Hope these give you some new options for exploring such an amazing part of the country!

Name suggestion "Answers with Andrea" Question - I use a non rinse woolwash and the directions say to fill my basin and then add the liquid wash, let sit 15 mins (ish lol) etc. What I want to know is why not put the wash in as you fill the basin so it mixes more through water and bubbles up a little (kind of like a bubble bath). I feel if I add the wash after it won't get through to all the yarn. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks for all the great content and am so glad it is continuing!

Love the Q&A and love your patterns - I am curious... Do you knit your designs by yourself? I watched a few interviews with some famous and well-published knitters and was a little surprised to hear that they put together the colour swatches and the graphs (if it is fair ilse) and then send it off to the knitters....it kind of doesn't make sense to me. I would think that making up the garment is part of the process designing hand knits. Would love to know your process.

Hi there! Great question. There are designers that have sample knitters knit all of their designs, but I prefer to knit them myself. I very much "design on the needles" - and have to work it out myself to see what will happen! Also - it's the fun part of my job, so I can't imagine outsourcing it ;) I have had a sample knitter knit me up a 2nd sample when I need to keep one nice for trunks shows, but want another I can wear with reckless abandon. :)

I also have celiac and find Portland to be a bit of a challenge. I drive up from Boston for the gf potato donuts at The Holy Donut, so good! Also for a fancy date night, Central Provisions every time. An incredible restaurant. Flatbreads pizza is my favorite gf pizza, and there are a bunch in the region!
In the north of Boston area Twist (in Burlington) is an excellent bakery/cafe where you barely feel like you have a dietary restriction. And for seafood, Woodmans of Essex. Best gf seafood around. Nearly everything is gf on the menu and they actually know how to use a deep fryer so the food isn’t soggy.
If there is anyone out there that knows where to find gf clam cakes please let us know! Maybe dreams do come true?!

Hiya! So the original is made out of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter - which I find to be a pretty light worsted. You could absolutely try swatching your DK to see if you can get gauge! I know a few knitters who it worked out great.

I realized why I enjoy your voice today- you are a Midwesterner too! Though I live in New Hampshire, I am from Indiana and my husband is from Michigan.
You are right, Maine is a bit behind on the gluten free options. In Portland, I love the Bam Bam Bakery - it is entirely gf and they offer lunch options as well. Linda Beans in Freeport is great for gf options. If I think of any more I will pass them along. Are you also vegetarian?

Thank you so much for the tips! Not currently a vegetarian - but I was for most of my life and still love to eat that way often :)

@@dreareneeknits That makes it a bit easier in Maine. Linda Beans has great gf seafood including lobster rolls and fried clams.
