I am soooooo glad that whoever bought the rights to UM did so and uploaded them to TH-cam. I remember when people used to upload them periodically before they got taken down. I think only one or two clips survived bc the uploader(s) star in and/or are the subject of the segment they uploaded. The only segments available on DVD were supernatural/reunion/angels/ghosts/etc. And the new version they put together with Dennis Farina is STRAIGHT UP ASS!!! They could have at least remixed the theme but noooooo. Robert Stack is a LEGEND and it is AMAZING that we can enjoy him in all his glory. He made this show what it is and despite being the subject of many nightmares, one thing remains the same, no matter how frightening this show is, not one of us who are true fans can stop watching. RIP Mr. Stack, your legacy lives on and we love and appreciate all of your work!

This show was gold. The opening theme music (eerie & mysterious); the awesome pulsating graphics; the great & historical reenactments with such attention to detail; & of course, the spot-on deadpan brilliance of host & narrator Robert Stack. He scared us all a little with his deep voice & serious nature but he was damn perfect for the role. He also brought the audience in by saying every episode: "Join us, perhaps YOU can solve... an unsolved mystery", hoping we could spot the scumbags that wreaked havoc on our towns! Kudos also to all those writers & producers & directors who made this show such a classic & beloved show 👏. Love re-watching all these old shows, yay!

These cops took a child that young, with an IQ that low into a room alone to question him? Can't take the results of that interview seriously. The police need to be educated on how to deal with disabilities.

I just want to comment on the re-enactment scene when Gary's father discovers what happened. Amazing acting; absolutely visceral! It was such a convincingly natural response that I got chills. I re-watched it a couple of times to really take it all in.
I'm so disappointed in the parenting skills of Gary's mother. A 7 year does not go unattended for hours let alone a secret appointment. He's a small child watch him play then bring him inside. Poooor little boy.
I agree to a point but back then kids all the time used to be allowed to go out and just hang without supervision. IMO Boo definitely killed Gary or it was Boo's brother from what i've researched. Disappointing the police screwed up the case.

You'd be surprised. If the child heard his parents or other adults say it often enough, they might use the term to imitate them. Kids that age pick up more vocabulary from adults than you think.
The case of Gary Grant Jr. was one of the most horrific and gut-wrenching episodes I ever saw. It gave me horrendous nightmares for years. It is incomprehensible how someone can do that to a little kid. To this day, I still can't watch that episode.
I was a mother also in the 80s and would never have let my 7 year old be on his own all day. Even for back then I think it should be considered parental neglect. Isn't it outrageous to say to a 7 YEAR OLD after breakfast, "see you at 430"?
Easy to judge, but people raise their kids based on trust they have, gender, type of neighborhood, and personal experience. I grew up in a small, country-side town. Only one murder in 35 years. My parents divorced and my mom worked 12 hour days. I was given a key to the house that I wore on a string around my neck to let myself in after school. My mom would leave a slow cooker meal with instructions. Granted, I was 10 years old, but I led a very independent life; promising to call my mom at work maybe once or twice before I put myself to bed. Sometimes I went to a friends house, played in the neighborhood, explored alone, and watched tv. Maybe I was lucky, maybe because I was smart, and likely that my mom needed to have that trust because she couldn't raise me and my siblings all alone. She needed our cooperation. It is bad enough this mom suffered the loss of a child. Cruel to accuse her of parental neglect. There was nothing in her life that made her think the cop ex-husband arrested a person with a vendetta to murder his son. Had that not been a factor I am most positive his son would have grown up and had a normal life.

35 yrs ago Monsters WERE killing kids on a regular. Adam Walsh who father started the America's most wanted tv program. Adam was abducted from a Kmart store and later his head and body were found. That was about 45 years ago. Child murders were not uncommon then either. We need to understand the times we are living in and stop raising our children in a bubble thinking we're protecting them. When you are born in the ghetto and live in rough areas you learn very young to be aware of your surroundings, trusting ppl can get you hurt and the world is full of real life monsters.
Not in 1984 we were latchkey kids meaning most of us would be left home alone by 7. At 7 I never told my parents were I was going I'd just yell I was going out and they'd shout back a time to be back or be home by the time the street lights came on. If I heard them yelling for me that meant get home if they were yelling my full name that meant hull ass.
I remember Colleen's story at first run. I'm so happy that she found the two people that rescued her. I wonder if anybody is still alive because it's been so many years now since this episode? I'm a little disturbed about the second guy who walked it. He seems suspicious more than someone delighted that Colleen was looking for him. What did he think she wanted after 15 years? Strange guy. At least he came to see her. The other guy was more open and delighted to see her. If Colleen is still alive, I wish her well. Great thing that she did, turning her tragedy into helping others by stressing the importance of buckling up. She's a hero too, just like her heros.
I don't believe Boo killed the cops kid, I respect law enforcement but who thinks that it is acceptable to take a 12yr old out of bed @ midnight, question him until early morning hours without a guardian present & then have them sign a BS confession. The pipe was a red herring, if it was the murder weapon it would have had Boo´s prints on it (we can assume it didn´t). Apparently strangulation was the cause of Gary´s death something that Boo confessed to and was only found out through an autopsy that that was the cause of death.

Why doesn't the woman, who was with him, have a better description of the two assailants? When she got in the van with him, she was in the passenger seat. When the criminals exit the van one of them comes out the passenger door. How, and why, did the woman end up in the back?
The guilt caught up with Hugh and he went somewhere to commit suicide quietly. That's why his tobacco and glasses were still in the vehicle. Japanese people often abandon their vehicles in the same way outside of the "suicide forest".

It was a different time back then. I grew up around that time and it really was not a big deal to just... go out for a day and hang out with friends. Sometimes we'd go to a park, an arcade, various other places. Parents just said "be home at X time" and that's what we did.

The case of Gary Grant Jr. was one of the most horrific and gut-wrenching episodes I ever saw. It gave me horrendous nightmares for years. It is incomprehensible how someone can do that to a little kid. To this day, I still can't watch that episode.

Easy to judge, but people raise their kids based on trust they have, gender, type of neighborhood, and personal experience. I grew up in a small, country-side town. Only one murder in 35 years. My parents divorced and my mom worked 12 hour days. I was given a key to the house that I wore on a string around my neck to let myself in after school. My mom would leave a slow cooker meal with instructions. Granted, I was 10 years old, but I led a very independent life; promising to call my mom at work maybe once or twice before I put myself to bed. Sometimes I went to a friends house, played in the neighborhood, explored alone, and watched tv. Maybe I was lucky, maybe because I was smart, and likely that my mom needed to have that trust because she couldn't raise me and my siblings all alone. She needed our cooperation. It is bad enough this mom suffered the loss of a child. Cruel to accuse her of parental neglect. There was nothing in her life that made her think the cop ex-husband arrested a person with a vendetta to murder his son. Had that not been a factor I am most positive his son would have grown up and had a normal life.
I grew up in the era of the missing milk carton kids, Atlanta Child Murders, and the Murder of Adam Walsh. Most people, we a little more adamant with their children.
When I was in kindergarten here in St Louis Missouri I walked to school all by myself it was only a half a day at school and with my older brother and older sister at school already we would walk to the babysitter's house afterwards that was the late seventies early '80s I was born in 74 so yeah the world hasn't really changed it's just the people that are evil
Gary was my uncle. It was a “it takes a village” type of community. They all looked out for each other… so they thought. nothing you have to say will break my grandmother’s heart more than losing her boy in this way already did.
I love the old NBC episodes, the production value declined significantly after NBC cancelled the show.
The NBC era was the best there were some good stories in the CBS era but I wasn’t a big fan of that theme

Gary’s my uncle and Boo is my cousin. Boo has the biggest, sweetest heart!! He absolutely is not involved!! but the police should have looked into gary’s father (my grandfather) a little more. I wasnt allowed to have consistent contact with my grandfather growing up and i believe its because my family had suspicions that he knew more than was letting on..
Now that I have a son of my own, I have a hard time watching any episodes like Gary's.

Gary was my uncle (my mom’s brother). obviously i never met him as he was murdered as a child, but Boo has been a part of my life since I was an infant and I have absolutely NO DOUBT that Boo was not involved in this AT ALL. It’s disgusting he had to go thru that treatment. He is the kindest soul and will do anything he can to help anyone around him. I strongly believe my grandfather knows more and should have been questioned more deeply… of course he lives in Puerto Rico now. My family is still searching for answers and grieving the loss of Gary every day. A few years ago we tried to get the case reopened without any luck. 💔💔

35 yrs ago Monsters WERE killing kids on a regular. Adam Walsh who father started the America's most wanted tv program. Adam was abducted from a Kmart store and later his head and body were found. That was about 45 years ago. Child murders were not uncommon then either. We need to understand the times we are living in and stop raising our children in a bubble thinking we're protecting them. When you are born in the ghetto and live in rough areas you learn very young to be aware of your surroundings, trusting ppl can get you hurt and the world is full of real life monsters.
Not in 1984 we were latchkey kids meaning most of us would be left home alone by 7. At 7 I never told my parents were I was going I'd just yell I was going out and they'd shout back a time to be back or be home by the time the street lights came on.

I remember Colleen's story at first run. I'm so happy that she found the two people that rescued her. I wonder if anybody is still alive because it's been so many years now since this episode? I'm a little disturbed about the second guy who walked it. He seems suspicious more than someone delighted that Colleen was looking for him. What did he think she wanted after 15 years? Strange guy. At least he came to see her. The other guy was more open and delighted to see her. If Colleen is still alive, I wish her well. Great thing that she did, turning her tragedy into helping others by stressing the importance of buckling up. She's a hero too, just like her heros.
I don't believe Boo killed the cops kid, I respect law enforcement but who thinks that it is acceptable to take a 12yr old out of bed @ midnight, question him until early morning hours without a guardian present & then have them sign a BS confession. Cops are just trying to solve a heinous crime but they nearly ruined that kids life.

The pipe was a red herring, if it was the murder weapon it would have had Boo´s prints on it (we can assume it didn´t). Apparently strangulation was the cause of Gary´s death something that Boo confessed to and was only found out through an autopsy that that was the cause of death.
This happened 15 min from my house... it was such a sad day when they found him. R.I.P. Gary
