    I've been interested in pigeons for just over ten years now. Finally I have one of my own and I've joined a local club. I wanted to look more into genetics - it's interested me in other species I share my home with, but as I don't plan to breed it's seemed too complex. Your videos make me believe I can finally get my head round the basics at least. I'll be watching this one again. Thanks.

    Hi I have a question about recessive red. I know my closed flock of Danzig high flyers have produced rec red in the past but I was wondering if there is any way of telling weather or not they are still carrying it? I do not have any reds or ever bred one. I know in my chickens I bred a lavender after 15 years of line breeding.

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the easiest way would be to get a recessive red of any breed and pair it to your birds. If yours carries rec red, approx 50% of the young will be rec red.

    • @adamfontana537
      @adamfontana537 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Archer Pigeons I feared that might be the cast. I have had this flock closed and isolated from other pigeons for a very long time and I have not had any of the viruses that are around today. In short I am too afraid to bring in any birds

    • @AdamArcherPigeons

      Understandable. Then you'll just have to wait and see if another pops up. It wouldn't be unlikely that it's still there if it's appeared before.

    Hey! I have a question: if you can have two recessive alleles, can you have two dominant alleles? What happens then? Thank you so much for this video. I'm not a hobbyist but got curious when I noticed how different patterns pigeons can have.

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pigeons have two spaces at each loci, so if we use the pattern locus as an example: if you have two copies of barless then there is no space for a more dominant allele like check. But that is just this single locus out of the thousands, you can definitely have a dominate allele like grizzle at it's loci too!

    Thanks for informing this i got confused in birds that it is XY and XX means the father is responsible for the offspring but in birds the female is that is what i understand today.ZZ and ZW.
    Also i didn't know that recombination and there is even a thing called epistatis. Also Lethality is quite puzzling.

    If I had two birds, a male and a female,
    Each bird carries in the genes a specific characteristic that differs from the other bird
    What is the best production line that can be used to produce a bird that carries the two traits (which combine in its genes) the traits of the parents and be visible on it?

      It seems to be that ash red isn't as well adjusted to life as blue is. For example ash red feathers are far more brittle than blue feathers.

    hi can you explan to me how they can have pair of the babies sometimes become both male?

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sex is determined by the Z and W chromosomes. Babies always get a Z chromosome from their father, and will get a Z or W from their mother. So it is a 50/50 chance. It is possible to have one of each, or two males, or two females in the nest. You'll get two males approx 25% of the time.

    First of all, this is really informative to a hobbyist like me. Thank you for your work.
    I also happen to have a question for you. I have a extreme dilute lemon colored female crossbred pigeon(still in molting stage and not sure whether this is the name for this color, but surely I ve never seen this color anywhere else other than in one of your videos). What could be the possible results if I pair it with a blue chequered Homer male?

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You will just get blues, however the young cocks will be carriers of dilute. If you pair one of these sons back to the dilute mother, you'll produce more like her.

    • @rejoysebastian7215
      @rejoysebastian7215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdamArcherPigeons thank you for the reply Adam!
      If you don't mind, one more question. Do you have any suggestion about, what should be the male bird phenotype to produce more dilute colored chicks ?

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rejoysebastian7215 Any male produced from a dilute hen will always carry the dilute gene, no matter his phenotype. If you pair him to his dilute mother, you'll produce male and female dilutes, as well as some non-dilutes, but again all the males will definitely carry dilute.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge , it is very usefull information. I have a question or two. In most colors , blue or red ash for example there is a scale of intensity of the color. A blue can go from very dark blue to a clear almost silvery blue.(I don't mean deluded or so but just blue) Is there a genetic reason for this and how does it work? Second question Do you know someone in my region where I could get barless blue or reds?
    Greetings from Belgium.

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, yes, often the difference is the "dirty" gene. I'll make a video about it in the future, but you should be able to find information on line. There are also other genes that have an impact, but "dirty" is the most common.
      Sorry, I don't know where you can get barless pigeons in Belgium.

    Ok I need some advice. I’m wanting to do some selective breeding next year on my birds.
    I’m wanting to cross a black hen with a white cock.
    My question is will I get tiger grizzles or solid colors?
    Also I have a blue bar cock (2019) that I received from a friend. His dad was a tiger grizzle but he took back from his mom as a blue bar. What color hen should I pair him up to in order to get some tiger grizzles?
    My goal is to get some tiger grizzles in my loft without buying some birds.
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, Black x white does not give Tiger Grizzles, Tiger Grizzle is a separate gene that will get its own video in time. Black x White will likely give you blacks, pieds, blues, and whatever else is hiding under the coat of white.
      Tiger grizzle is also dominant, so it cannot be hidden in a blue bar. You need to get another tiger grizzle for breeding if you want one - can you loan one from a friend? Don't forget to subscribe so that you don't miss the future updates!

    Wonder Informations. Okay,
    Let me ask you whether T check pattern colour can produce black colours ?
    And another question is about cross over . Let's consider A as Sire , B as Dam and C as their Offspring.
    So, what will be the genetic sequence if A and C is mated and produce an offspring called D . As you told , C already posses two books A and B . What is the use of producing D from A and C (some breeders call it as inbreeding)?
    Thanks You
    Best Regards

    • @AdamArcherPigeons
      @AdamArcherPigeons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      T Check can produce a very dark phenotype, but it is not "true black" without the Spread gene. In a few weeks I'll have a video done on the different patterns and colours.
      I think you're a bit confused about crossover, so I'll work on the script for the crossover and linkage episode to make it more clear.

    • @AdamArcherPigeons

      Your first generation, the babies will be check unless the check parent carries the bar gene. In that case, half the babies will be bar. Blue bar x blue bar will produce blue bars unless both parents carry the rare barless gene.
