@@AdamArcherPigeons Ok have also just watched all your other videos on how to series. I have a question please not sure if modifier related !! A friend is breeding about 20 squeakers of world class rollers for me, he was world champion with the fly cup some years back. Although I am focusing mainly on performance, the only problem is that the majority are dark T blue check. I do not find them attractive and remind me of the horrible feral pigeon. I see T check is quite dominant. There is some red check available which I gather is dominant to blue? Also have some black spread with white flights to work with. What avenue would you suggest to slowly start breeding away the ugly blue t check. I am trying to maintain the family. Sorry for the long question and hope it is not too broad
@@petpot1962 You're right, unfortunately T-Check is the most dominant of all the pattern genes (and also very common in feral pigeons too). The only way you can avoid this is by bringing in a new colour unfortunately. Grizzle is a dominant gene that is also fairly common, you could try that. Otherwise, blue bar is recessive to T-check, but after a few generations you'll have a few come out. Of course, you could always just breed the reds with the T-checks, Red T-check is more attractive than blue..
@@AdamArcherPigeons Thanks for your invaluable input. I pretty much thought what you suggested is the way I would need to go. Having raced pigeons for over 50 years you'd be surprised how many fanciers don't understand the basic rules on genetics. And I've also never seen a Brown racing bird while racing. I myself have only bred a few, but had to obtain a Brown to do so.
Hi ,just saw this video.im a pigeon Fancier and breed the opal color in TIPPLERS.im still learning and have a question? Can I mate 2 opal tippler that both have the opal tail bar?
Thank you adam.i am aware that opal to opal , dominant is semi lethal but, what I'm kind of having trouble is,i have 2 birds an opal white bar cock bird with the white opal tail bar and,a hen,a blue check or lace also, with a opal white tail bar..can they be mated together? How do I determine if they are both dominant?
To determine if a gene is dominant or recessive, pair it to a normal unrelated blue bar. If you get the gene to express in the first generation, it is dominant, if you can only get it by pairing F1s together, it is recessive.
Impossible to tell without knowing the genetics of the white. White genes simply turn off pigment production, there are still colours, patterns, and modifiers underneath the white.
Hello Adam, big fan of your channel. I need help with something. Is it possible a red bar or silver cock mated to a blue bar white flights hen produce blue check babies (one having white flights)? I might need to DNA test them. Everywhere i look it seems it's not possible. Thank you in advance.
On your front page advertisement photo you show a pigeon that is blue or silver, but it has a rose or bronzish color on it's chest that doesn't seem to belong with the rest of the bird. Some breeds have this. Some doves and wild birds have varying shades of color on their bodies. Is this caused by a gene infused by a wild dove-like pigeon?
There are quite a few pied genes and unfortunately not many are well studied. It would be an interesting project for someone to put a decade or two into researching them!
This question is really impossible to answer. White covers over the true colour. Perhaps, first you should pair with a Blue Bar, and that should help you discover what the true colour, pattern, and maybe modifiers of your white pigeon.
I paired white male with solid silver hen. Only one egg could survive and the other was broken. The baby coming is silver with red bars and three flying feathers in white on both sides.
Sounds like you are very new to Pigeon genetics. Id recommend you keep watching the videos, and reading genetics websites and books, until you have a better understanding of the basics.
Thank you for the clear introduction. My pigeons are Birmingham Rollers, almost all badges with white flights and tails: from your remarks I take it that these markings are not the result of a Pattern gene but what factor/s are involved please? The birds are both bars or chequers and I think their colours are only due to either Blue or Recessive Red (no Ash Red) with many of them blue bars in phenotype or 'black' in appearance, a few with brownish smears which I take to be due to a single dose of recessive red, and chestnut red which I take to be due to a double dose. In the communal breeding loft I have a pair of blue bar badges, which therefore presumably do not carry Spread (that being dominant to wild type/'non spread' as I understand it), but they often produce black badge youngsters. I would only have expected only blue bars from them so may I ask: does this mean that so many of their youngsters are illegitimate, or may there be modifiers involved? i.e. may I ask if the black coloured birds must be due to Spread or whether it might be due to other modifiers?
You're right, spread is dominant, but it is also possible for T-check to occasionally mimic spread, especially when modifiers like dirty, smokey, or sooty are involved. I'm not familiar with "badge", as I'm not a roller breeder, but I assume it's a form of pied?
Badge consists of irregular white patches around the head, which in racing pigeons I guess might be covered by the term 'pied'. The other common varieties of white head markings are Bald: white on most, or just the top half, of the head! and Beard: like a beard!! but I guess that in racers pied may be used to describe white body and wing markings too. Are they produced by individual non-pattern genes, please? - Yes I think dirty, smokey, and sooty may well be in the family and will need to look those up. I believe that any blacks due to T-Pattern would probably look muddy-black with more pattern showing through but the ?'illegitimates' are a more solid black colour with more or less bronze/chestnut coloured fine edges to their feathers...
Ok, yes, bald head, badge, beard etc are all modifiers. I honestly don't have a lot of experience with roller breeding, but I think Baldhead and beard might be alleles of each other? But don't quote me on that, I definitely could be wrong. Heterozygous spread can often show pattern bleeding through.
At least in practice, baldhead and beard as alleles could make sense. 'Heterozygous spread', right thanks and after all the pair of blue badges would not have chequer either. So that would seem only to leave modifiers, to explain how their black offspring might be legitimate. Do you know of a particular combination of them which would be more likely to do it? and is there a chance that a single dose of recessive red enhance such an effect please?
