The whole arrangement should be taught in composition classes. Perfection. She'd probably shrug at that praise, but I don't care. Aimee Mann is truly one of the greatest.....

Sorry I just stepped on your line: great movie, "baby god" if disturbing. The other big Aimee Mann needledrop is "Save Me" from "Magnolia" movie - she did the whole soundtrack, plus her podcast with Ted Leo plus of course voices......carry...

If anyone needs help understanding the song:
Aimee wrote this song about actor Andrew Garfield, when she first met him at a party before he was Spider-man and super famous but when he was just getting into the acting profession after the first couple of films one of them being The Social Network put him on the map pretty quickly. So i gather this song is based about on him being "new" and having hopes about the future.

I had more to say, my dear:
So many pretenders back in the day. Baez, Mitchell, Joplin...so many pretenders though only one can reign. But we must segregate these things. Queen of what/who? Dylan or Elvis.
    Am I affirming the 'patriarchy'?
Absolutely I am...as does your mother, Nature. Even TS Eliot confessed his sub-station to Hamlet in Prufrock. Though he was, and remains, TS Eliot.
The point is, you are queen to Dylan's king...Taylor Swift is Presley's complement.
You stand above the rest so supremely there is no contest. I quite simply adore you. Every note...every inflection...I am paying attention.
You are most blessed, Aimee Mann...I look forward with anticipation to what follows next...and to quiet meditation over past songs yet unheard. It's like skiing fresh slopes...hearing a new Mann tune.
May God richly bless you, my beloved.

They served you champagne like a hero
When you landed, someone carried your bag
From here on out, you're patient zero
Smelling ether as they hand you the rag
    Life is good
    You look around and think
    I'm in the right neighborhood
But, honey, you just moved in
    Life is grand
    And wouldn't you like
To have it go as planned?
    Go as planned
    Hip hip hooray, hocus pocus
With some magic you can fly through the air
But when you're the guy pulling focus
There are people who will wish you weren't there
    Life is good
    You look around and think
    I'm in the right neighborhood
But, honey, you just moved in
    Life is grand
    And wouldn't you like
To have it go as planned?
    Go as planned
    Go west, young man
Go west, take a real screen test
Doesn't count as a job well done
    The locust had their day
    The suckers pay and pay
Carmen Sternwood probably pull that trigger for fun
And in the hills, where all the sunshine, constant companion
Close enough to almost touch the lights of the canyon
    The lights of the canyon
But news filtered out of the transom
That a villain ended up with a part
You paid your respects like a ransom
To a moment that was doomed from the start
    Life is good
    You look around and think
    I'm in the right neighborhood
    But, honey, you don't belong
    Life is grand
    And wouldn't you like
To have it go as planned?
    Go as planned
And in the hills, where all the sunshine, constant companion
Close enough to almost touch the lights of the canyon
    The lights of the canyon
    The lights of the canyon
    The lights of the canyon
    The lights of the canyon

I´ve been a unconditional fan of Aimee Mann since Boston 1982, when she was writing, singing and playing bass in her new wave band Til Tuesday, with Robert Holmes, Joey Pesce and Michael Hausmann. This is not one of her best songs by any means. Better listen to Magnolia´s "Wise Up", that´s where the gold is.

I know the meaning of this song. There are no good guys, there is no good at all. There is evil only, and good consists in embracing evil as good...and with the whole of your heart. Entree to success and happiness is contingent on this breakthrough, lest they set about to totally break you. The choices are solitude or submission; and in selecting solitude you provoke those who insist on submission -- for there is only the illusion of choice. It can be likened to the scene in 1984 where Watson is being tortured. "How many fingers am I holding up!?!?!!!". You must answer wrong to be right, and the torture will not stop until you embrace, with heart-mind& spirit the truth in officially sanctioned error. His interest in Goldberg's treatise and the torture subsequent this interest is meant to underscore the futility of escape. That even entertaining the possibility of escape into solitude will cost you the last of your mind, heart & spirit. There simply is no tolerance for disseent to a world of deceit. I credit the deceivers in at least confessing as much.
There are no good guys and there is no good. Understand this and submit to lies and the awesome power thereof, or be ruthlessly crushed. And they are supremely patient, with zero tolerance for disseent. Take heed therefore, ye naive and idealistic, and abandon all hope -- they WILL break you, inasmuch as such is their favored amusement. You were born into a black cube of torment, with your sense of justice and humanity set at enmity with the chieftans lording over this hurt locker. Most of all, do not draw attention to yourself if you are so naive as to believe in natural law, decency or goodness itself.
