20 years later, going through a really really hard time in my life, and hearing this waking up one morning had me sobbing into my pillow. And you know what? I feel much better. Because things have to get better from here. Thank you Aimee.
We have something incredibly long, very confusing, and a little homophobic. And really, really, specifically, surprisingly, and gratuitously critical of Israel.
I found some money lying around in a gutter in Manchester, UK, when i was very, very broke. I could have spent it on booze - and i was very tempted - but i had heard Aimee Mann was in town so i bought the tickets and took my long suffering wife. She loved the gig. When this song came up we were standing quietly at the back of the room. My wife was amazed at my outpouring...and frankly, so was i. But she helped. Very much. Nearly 25 years later. Thank you Aimee. x
Doesn't get much better. Beautiful song, even better voice. Aimee Mann is infinitely better than most people in the charts these day. Sigh. Never got the recognition she deserved.

I sat on my kitchen floor in January, sobbing and sobbing with this on repeat. I don't know how to make things better exactly but I can try. So I try to look after myself better. I try to make sure I connect with people and if they don't return well it was down to them and not me, I tried. I seem to be in a better way now so I'll keep at it.

Currently i watch Community and hear this music in this series for the first time. Yesterday, I watched Magnolia for the first time, not knowing that played here too. Coincidence? I think not.
just give up, in my opinion is not referring to quitting, its about surrendering, choosing life, when to continue with status quo, both mentally and physically, would mean certain death.
People don't want to hear this but I really think she means just "give up" because it's hopeless to fight whatever you're fighting. But she really means, I think, is rationalizing the sequence of events, so whatever is happening is going to continue happening, until you understand that you can't fight it and just give up. It's not at all clear what in the song is being "given up." The conflicts in the film are a series of unhappy coincidences, but the rain of frogs is literally outside of logic. That's why I think it's juxtaposed with the sequence of the police officer falling in love after all the terrible, unhappy things are revealed. The characters in the story don't seem at all involved but they are all intertwined and there is a love story at the center of it, but nobody watching the film could see the movie being that. I suspect that's kind of what the director was going for. You don't really know where the story is going, so stop trying to know, or, "give up."
Yes. This is exactly right. Give up and Wise Up. Give up trying to find ground. In the search for ground, we are running away from the discomfort and dis-ease, which seems like the right thing to do, but when we look for ease or comfort, it is usually in temporal and short-lived things, people, and events. There is a kind of self-loathing in this. When we Give Up, we are actually allowing our vulnerability to be cracked open like a cave shrouded in darkness for millennia that suddenly is filled with yellow noise, sunlight. Where did the darkness go? Dark-filled for millenia and out of nowhere the black and dank cavernous hole is enveloped by light. Awareness clears away confusion making us fresh and clean again wich was our birthright. Like the addict who meets their bottom, rusted and worn, they are empty vessels, ready for the light of wisdom to fill them. Ready to wise up. To rise-up. To know that there is wisdom in groundlessness. To know that escaping is temporary, but leaning in is long-term. The Stoics are great examples of living a life of meaning instead of a life of happiness. This happiness ambition we have culturally been indoctrinated into is misguided and may very well be partly why we turn to dopamine delivery systems, instead of placing value on being free from all passions because intrinsically not being temperate in our response to things we are only harming ourselves.
It's so silent but exploding in your mind. Thank you Madame, thanks to your song I've written my credo poem. I've gave up and I've started sticking to really important things.

Congratulations : you're able to read in my Mind, just like approximately more than 9 Billions of people like you :-) Apart from that, Groundhog Day is indeed a Masterpiece according to me, a bit like "The Edge of Tomorrow" in a more funny way :-)
This song gives me the feels every single time I hear it. The emotions it evokes make me uncomfortable to say the least. I am a recovering addict who has left a wake of damage in my past. I finally wised up. Things are not perfect or even how I'd like them to be, but at least I'm not addicted to something that was going to kill me sooner than need be. If you are struggling with alcoholism/addiction, do yourself a favor-reach out for help-you can't beat them on your own. The heaviest thing in the world can be a cell phone-but pick it up anyway. Call someone and share what you're experiencing. and ask them if they can help you find the hep you need. No matter how bad you have made a mess of your life and hurt those around you-you deserve a chance to change. You deserve a chance to heal, you deserve a chance to love and to be loved. You deserve to live. Be well my friends...
March 2021, i had a few days with no alcohol or klonopin, & this thought came to me: "... if i don't drink, & do pills, that doesn't mean my life's gonna be all great or something, it's life, any weird thing can happen, who knows how it will go, but if i don't stop, & keep going like i have been, i've got a pretty good idea where that's going to go." & then i ran into an old neighbor who had a few years sober, & i told him about that thought i'd just had, & he said, "naw, you don't have a pretty good idea of how that goes, you know exactly ..." & he was right, & we're still here, dealing with whatever life has for us ... 🙏💜🕯️🌱🐾👣🌿🌎🕊️ Edit: have 2 other song/poems ... ◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️ 1. The backing vocals Michael Penn provided are just heavenly... just simple harmonizing Ahhhhs are beautifully done and so subtle but the song would not be the same without them building it up to the resolve of the chorus
All of the characters in Magnolia are holding on to their past identities. They all need to wise up. You need to give up who you are to be who you were meant to be.
The film Magnolia had a real effect on my life. It changed the way I saw other people and their struggles and just the shit everyone goes through in life, and that I need to be nice to everyone because everyone you meet is dealing with heavy things all the time in their life.
It’s funny. When I feel low, wisening up seems impossible and I bawl my eyes out to this song. When I’m feeling positive the song pushes me to try harder. I’m glad (to read in the comments) it works the other way round for those who are in a dark place. I hope every day to come is easier for you.
don't ever let anyone ever say to you you shouldn't regret anything. Don't do that. Don't! You regret what you fucking want! Use that. Use that. Use that regret for anything, any way you want
I don't know what's more beautiful... this, save me, her cover of one or Magnolia in which PTA managed to beautifully weave all three into a wonderful tale about the pursuit of happiness.
This is a really powerful song, what exactly that means, is different to everyone. I'm certain Aimee wasn't able to see the impact it would make on so many different people. Either way, a great song, by a great writer!
My name is Claudia. This song and the movie Magnolia mean a lot to me as well. Not because one of the characters shares my name but because of the experiences I share with her. My dxug of choice was never you know what she was doing but opiates. No better or worse of a choice of escape. This song and movie have helped me find pride in myself again and the courage to change me and my life. God bless everyone struggling out there as I still do but I'm still here kicking and if I can even help one other person out there to keep kicking too then maybe my life and theirs will be worth something. Happy 2022 to everyone!
Have you heard the news? Dan Harmon said that the Community movie isn't a matter of "if", but of "when"! #sixseasonsandamovie may really come true after all these years...
I know this post is ancient, but I was listening to this song and wanted to read other peoples opinions on it. I think this song can apply to so many people about so many things. Yes, a suggestion of alcoholism, and definitely using alcohol for escape, is mentioned in one line but that’s not the whole story at all. Many people work to get what they want whether it’s fame, marriage, a career, et cetera. They think that this will fill the hole in them but they find that they are just as miserable as they were before, maybe even more so because they don’t have something new to reach for. And so they are stuck in a marriage with an abusive, cruel partner. They have run away and joined the foreign legions and they find that it’s a living hell. Whatever the case, the point is that until they find love, peace and happiness within themselves and stop allowing themselves to be a victim; until they are able to look at themselves objectively and understand the mistakes they are making, address them and correct to them; the misery will never go away. They cannot expect someone or something to fix them. Decisions they make will often harm them until THEY TREAT THEMSELVES LIKE SOMEBODY THEY LOVE. All the bad experiences, all the bad feelings, all of The weaknesses and addictions and all the cruelty will not stop until you wise up….. IMHO
This has to be my favorite song on the soundtrack of this movie.. Aimee's Vocals haunt and move me when I here her. Thanks Aimee for the gift that you give your fans..
This is the definition of irony. When I first watched magnolia, it was on late at night and my wife had gone to bed. During this song she came downstairs and yelled at me to turn it down. 18 or so years later we are separated and she's in rehab.
If I'm not mistaken, the story is JT Anderson (Magnolia producer) heard this song and decided to create a movie around it, he was so moved. That's how Aimee got the whole soundtrack, and is the meaning of the whole movie
@@windh Oh, Christ! Sorry! P.T. Anderson, not "J.T.". What a fucking mistake! Stingodisanto. la encuentro muy sobrevaloradaaaaaaaa
Jeebus. I've loved Aimee for decades. She never fails to amaze me. Her music just grows to epic proportions.
THE GODDAMN REGRET
+AdonisJones If they approach, I Kick the Dogs :-)
"Groundhog Day" (1993) is a better movie! ;-)
Congratulations : you're able to read in my Mind, just like approximately more than 9 Billions of people like you :-) Apart from that, Groundhog Day is indeed a Masterpiece according to me, a bit like "The Edge of Tomorrow" in a more funny way :-)
Can you believe it...it's a Broadway Musical now...

Very beautiful very haunting. Magnolia was a special movie. Terribly underrated.
Superlative performances all around and an unyielding and relentless performance by Tom Cruise. One of his best.
For my husband, my son….please listen….😢
March 2021, i had a few days with no alcohol or klonopin,
& this thought came to me:
"... if i don't drink, & do pills, that doesn't mean my life's gonna be all great or something, it's life, any weird thing can happen, who knows how it will go,
but if i don't stop, & keep going like i have been, i've got a pretty good idea where that's going to go."
& then i ran into an old neighbor who had a few years sober, & i told him about that thought i'd just had, & he said,
"naw, you don't have a pretty good idea of how that goes, you know exactly ..."
& he was right,
& we're still here,
dealing with whatever life has for us ...

I'm here cause I like this song...💕💕💕💕 no troubles brought me here. But dang- rips your heart out kinda song!!💔💔💔😟😟
Idk tom cruises character created a new character to put away the pain of his mother, and in reality become who he thought his father was,
The film Magnolia had a real effect on my life.
I love how everyone's sharing deeply sad personal experiences and I'm just here because of a community gag lol
Community and Magnolia…
The two greatest things ever created that used this song perfectly each in their own way.
Don't ever give up , Wise up and make good choices. I'ts all up to you in the end.
Yeah, that's it!
don't ever let anyone ever say to you you shouldn't regret anything. Don't do that. Don't! You regret what you fucking want! Use that. Use that. Use that regret for anything, any way you want
Nice
@@somchaokuhne9906 is that sarcasm I detect?
Don't give up on your life or your self but give up on hopeless situations before you go down with the ship
I quoted this song to my boss in a performance review, and they gave me a promotion.
What music should always be, encapsulated.
I heard this on the XFM Ricky Gervais Show and instantly loved it. what a lovely song!

Best movie and best soundtracks ever
Every now and again I listen to this and I wonder if I have wised up yet. At 50, I think I am starting to get it.
I got it at 50. 4 years later and things are perfect. Really, perfect.
love this song.
I don't know what's more beautiful... this, save me, her cover of one or Magnolia in which PTA managed to beautifully weave all three into a wonderful tale about the pursuit of happiness.
Wow. That hit me x
What a great song!
I finally understand everything about this song.
I hate how I learned it.
The most emotionally intelligent song I think I’ve ever heard
This is a really powerful song, what exactly that means, is different to everyone. I'm certain Aimee wasn't able to see the impact it would make on so many different people. Either way, a great song, by a great writer!
One of my favourite film scenes ever, just so weird, and oddly powerful.
Happy 2022 to everyone!
claudia is a beautiful name
@@jamesd.salehi4752 thank you so very much James. ☺
I'm eternally grateful to Community for introducing me to such an awesome song.
#sixseasonsandamovie.
Have you heard the news? Dan Harmon said that the Community movie isn't a matter of "if", but of "when"! #sixseasonsandamovie may really come true after all these years...

I dying of an autoimmune disease it helps me! My brother RIP passed from same illness even went to med school no cure
im sorry..... try the welcome home cd every song is great.....
What disease? Sorry honey
IMHO
Beautifully put.
This has to be my favorite song on the soundtrack of this movie.. Aimee's Vocals haunt and move me when I here her. Thanks Aimee for the gift that you give your fans..
I was bawling when I first watched that scene. Still one of my favorite scenes in movies.
Great movie. No regrets on my end!

GET THE REFERENCE if you like Chris morris. You know jam
"wise up means" to stop catching "happiness" and surrender to the mixed emotions of life (that for some of us can be more sad than for others)
Beautiful 😊
The whole movie is about realization, so is this song.
One of the videos of Barn Owl Wedding Ring Delivery brought me here to this song.
This song is a priceless jewel! Thanks Aimee! ❤
This is the definition of irony.
When I first watched magnolia, it was on late at night and my wife had gone to bed.
During this song she came downstairs and yelled at me to turn it down. 18 or so years later we are separated and she's in rehab.
this song talks to me and yes, I am trying to wise up but do we really learn or just being prepped for the next one.
life keeps moving. sometimes we get hit with the end of a marriage. But that brings with it, new opportunities.
If I'm not mistaken, the story is JT Anderson (Magnolia producer) heard this song and decided to create a movie around it, he was so moved. That's how Aimee got the whole soundtrack, and is the meaning of the whole movie
Truth?
Any interviews, links to backup?
Oh boy. So many facts wrong here, don't know where to start.. "JT Anderson, the Producer...." Christ.
@@windh Oh, Christ! Sorry! P.T. Anderson, not "J.T.". What a fucking mistake!
"By the time he started writing the script, Anderson was listening to the music of his friend Aimee Mann.[8] He used her first two solo albums and demo tracks for her upcoming third album, Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo, as a basis and inspiration;[12] he said he "sat down to write an adaptation of Aimee Mann songs"."

Chris Morris' JAM made me aware of this song. What an unsettling but visually stunning TV show.
Im soo in love❤...Aimee
Everyone is talking about how this song has helped them in their lives
For me this song is just about Pierce and Jeff’s Spanish assignment
When I need a really, really good cry, this is the one.
