This 'Fair and Lovely' is really a kind of racism ! It's amazing to see that people with whiter skin want their skin to be tanned while people who are born with tanned skin are trying to become whiter ! This is the statement I've heard from a white neighbor at the pool that she wished her skin was brown/darker because it age very gracefully and less prone to skin disease !

To be honest, facial features such as strong angles, wide jawlines, hollow cheeks, narrow eyes, etc. Are quite common of the Dravidians not the Aryans. The only thing they don't have is pointy noses but other than that Aryans usually have round faces and big eyes. A simple look at the depictions of various Hindu gods will reveal the soft features of a typical Aryan.

This mentality of fairness of skin relating to status or social standing is for the challenged mentally. I am african 100% and see color as differentiating factor of ones heritage and not status or levels of IQ. The lesser the IQ, the more one harbors such retrogressive and archaic sentiments. Banning fairness products would result in a situation similar to Prohibition in the US. The people want fairness products and they will acquire them legally or otherwise. If they are legal there can be a certain measure of oversight and control by the authorities. But when the industry is forced underground by prohibition, the criminal and the unscrupulous will take over. The whole situation will be akin to the drug traffic

If people don't understand this, you are on the Wrong side of History & Part of the Problem. All humans are the same underneath the skin. Fair skin draws attention faster. I'm sorry but that is the way of the world.
That is why people want to be fair.
Why do you think Parsis and Iranis ruled the mercantile roost in British India? Because they were exceptionally talented? No! Because they were fair and for some reason , fairness is linked with an assumption of competence.
Dark skin simply doesn't draw your attention as fast, and therefore over generations, dark skinned individuals have to work harder to draw attention.

the fact is, it is an issue stemming from the British Raj, where people with fair skin were thought to be economically well off and influential. I say it isnt racial as it is people RIGHT NOW (like journalists and media ironically!) who have made it this way. I would expect Barkha Dutt to take a more holistic approach to such issues

I think the reason for white being attractive as a colour theoretically is obvious. It’s just about what the eye catches first, if I show you a black background image in contrast to white background image. Your eye will choose the white one cause the features in the foreground are more visible hence making it easier for eyes to catch - term ‘eye catchy’ hence more attractive. Same goes with people with white skin the features on face become more prominent & easier to catch by an eye than facial features on a darker skin. Hence it automatically becomes the first preference of your eye. So this is from where the term of being more attractive came from and people became obsessed with it. If you have to paint a room in your room you will prefer a lighter shade/ white over dark/black room. Cause white will make your eye trace around easier & making the other furniture /features of your room easily tracable. This is logical and scientific explanation of why light skin is more preferable than dark. And from this started out obsession with the fair.
At the human level we should understand this scientific point and accept it while being more human and understanding that their should be no beauty standards. It lies in the eye of the beholder.

There's no problem with a dark person wanting to have a fairer complexion if they think that would make them look prettier...the problem is with these advertisements that link so many things like confidence, success, happiness to a fair complexion..they are unknowingly or knowingly trying to lower the confidence of those who love their complexion. Basically these is a marketing strategy where first you create the need and then make people believe that your product can fulfill this need with the aim of motivating people to buy your product. This is evil !!!

Its individual choice whether or not to use fairness creams just as it is a choice whether to shave or retain pubic hair!
