    In this video, we go through the process of re-creating a hard to find rubber trim gasket for a 1958 BMW Isetta. We go through the process of setting up a silicone mold, casting a flexible urethane, and give many tips and tricks along the way. We will cast BJB's F-130 High Performance Urethane Rubber to produce a part that looks as good as the original!
    Shop our selection of cast urethane and silicones, or speak with our technical staff to help you pick the right one. We also have a huge selection of castable polyurethanes for making parts in the mold; from soft, flexible gels, tough rubber, on up to rigid plastics!

    excellent. I am trying to find or reproduce a rubber seal for a vehicle and this seemed to help me decide it can be reproduced. I do have the original but it has some cracks so im not sure if I can use it to make the mold. GREAT video!

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Russ Feldbusch that is a great question. If you can find a way to make small repairs to the original (fill cracks with clay or bondo) then it may keep things simple. Sometimes though, you’ll need to make a new one using 3D printing or machining like the video and then you can make a high quality mold. If you need help, feel free to send our tech staff an email to show us the part. We are really good at guiding the customer in a practical direction vs just selling you products that aren’t needed. info@bjbenterprises.com

    I need to copy a narrow wood moulding to make it so it will curve. The trim is around the countertop in my kitchen, and we made the deck side curve. We couldn't get the moulding to bend even with soaking and trying to score the backside. I think I need to make a silicone duplicate of the moulding and then make a flexible, paintable moulding out of that. Is this doable?

    What would you use to create a gasket around the entire sunroof? Would silicone be good enough, it won't stick to paint and can be easily removed?

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it possible? Yes. Do you have the equipment and knowledge to make a mold that can cast flexible materials into? That's the key question. Building molds for one part is a very long and expensive route if you haven't done this before. The mold you see here was this customer's project after completing many others before this and having many failures along the way. We often recommend starting with a small, simple part first to learn the process before starting on a large, complicated part.

  • @Daan87423
    @Daan87423 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question about 06:50, is there any way to ensure the cast is exactly the height of the mold? I imagine one way would be to pour an excess of resin and then go over the mold with a flat part to ensure the resin is even with the mold, but not sure if this would work or not. Two part mold would also work I guess but I would rather avoid that.
    Also, what would the strategy be if there were one or more (through)holes in the part? Would it still be possible to use one part mold?

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi There. You are correct, the easiest way to make a perfectly flat "top" is place a piece of plexi or similar on top (mold released) and slowly lay it over the exposed top of the mold. You would see some flashing around the edges as it's squeezed out. As far a holes, you can incorporate metal pins in the molding process. See our advanced mold tutorial here for that: th-cam.com/video/C7uMkBzOMaMh/w-d-xo.htmlttps://th-cam.com/video/C7uMkBzOMaM/w-d-xo.html

    Is it possible to color silicon in some specific color?

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. You need to start with a clear or non-pigmented silicone first and then add pigment.

    • @XVRickXV
      @XVRickXV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. If you want strong, bright or dark colors use clear silicone. If you want cream or pastel colors, use white silicone. If you want something in the middle like a khaki, light olive green, pale brown etc. Mix some white and clear silicone with your pigments. Let me give you an example with just the color red. Red pigment and clear silicone,=pure red. Red pigment and white silicone=pink. Red pigment and a mix of clear and white silicones=rose(which is a little darker thank pink). You might need to play with the white to clear ratio of your silicones. It all depends on how opaque your white silicone is. Hope this helps!

    _Overall an excellent video!_
    _But it should be noted that a machined master from an outside supplier will be very expensive._
    _Therefore, if cost is an issue, one should consider hand-crafting the master pattern from readily-available materials._

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, that is very true. In this particular case, finding an original piece to take a mold off was not possible and the aftermarket parts available were terrible in quality. The individual here decided to invest into making an OEM quality pattern and subsequent parts. If he were to re-do a similar part or project, it would be more economical to simply 3D print a pattern (even in 2-3 pieces given the length) and hand finish to a high quality surface and make molds from there.

    Why not just CNC the wood mold, and cast rubber in it? Does the mold have to be silicon?

    • @bjbenterprises
      @bjbenterprises  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel Ziran-Xu there are several materials you can use for molds (metal, plastic, tooling board) but wood is not recommended unless you do a lot of work sealing, sanding, and smoothing the surface. Silicone is very easy to make molds for casting urethane because you can cast it against your model and capture the detail while not needing a lot of mold release (silicone is non-stick).
