    In 1961 Omega released a new watch mechanism: Calibre 661. By the number of components per volume, it was the smallest ever industrial manufactured automatic movement in the world. To this day, this record is still unbeaten!
    The watch arrived in rather poor condition suffering both water damage,
    broken escape wheel and worn out auto rotor post. Most annoyingly, it also
    suffered from 'jellified' rubber casing gasket. While most vintage Omega
    watches manufactured in 60s and 70s do suffer from this issue, this DeVille
    was definitely the worst one I've worked on in years.
    The restoration project commenced in December 2020 and was completed 3 months later, on February 26, 2021. Sourcing the original parts was a
    challenge. The main goal of this restoration was to preserve as many
    original parts as possible, especially the original dial and hands.
    The escape wheel was re-fitted (riveted) on new a pinion. The timekeeping
    result was rather pleasing with a healthy amplitude. Final touch: a
    new-old-stock leather strap by Hirsch found in the junk box.
    To viewers interested in total restoration cost: $460 was spent on
    replacement parts and the labour cost was $1,100 (Australian dollars).
    Was it worth it? This is always a question only the watch owner can answer
    for him/herself. Turing a broken and discarded watch into a family heirloom
    which once again keeps time is always money well spent.
    My special thanks goes to Michael who spent countless hours recording and editing this video.

    The question of 'is it worth it' only arises when price gets confused with value. I never hesitate to keep my vintage omegas serviced, they will last indefinitely and accumulate immense value with each generation they pass through. Thank you Mr Hacko.

    This one had me shivering.. Restored an old Slava 5602A movement about a year ago. Had that disgusting black goo all through it. Stuck to everything. Took quite a while of delicate cleaning but the end result was worth it.
    Friends watch that he bought in the old USSR back in the 80's. Hadn't run for at least 15 years and no watchmaker would touch it. Broken pivot on the 3rd wheel had me buying watches from Russia to pillage parts.
    I'm only a hobbyist but love working on watches.
    Again Nicholas wonderful work bringing that fine piece back to running condition and bravo for the choice of strap. perfection!

    I've always imagined that people who do restorations must get a strong sense of satisfaction when applying their craft to a damaged and/or neglected object and bringing it back to full-functionality and it's former glory. I've watched many restoration videos of those who restore tools and other things, but I've always been in awe of those who do mechanical watch repair at this level. I've had ADD most of my life and just trying to figure out where everything is supposed to go makes my head hurt.

    I was very curious about how you managed to polish the dial from the rubber, very "amanuensis" work! After servicing this one, for you, working on an ETA 2824, will be like working on a pocket watch movement! :-)How beautiful is to see the escapement wheel vigorously spinning back and forth! Thank you so much for sharing this outstanding video about craftsmanship. the movent holder provided by Omega, seems 3D printed! :-)

    • @autodidact537
      @autodidact537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should've consulted a dictionary before you used the word 'amanuensis'. An 'amanuensis' is a type of secretary, someone who takes dictation or copies things.

    • @fabriziodutto7508
      @fabriziodutto7508 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@autodidact537 I know Nicholas guessed the right meaning! BTW, please don't give Latin words the equivalent English meaning and also use context, to guess the right meaning of the words. Just to be clear, I was thinking about "amanuensis" monks work. These monks, with extreme patience and skills, on their benches, used to add beautiful illustration on the pages while transcribing ancient manuscripts. These "amanuensis" (always quoted, because it's a Latin term) works are rare artpieces treasured everywhere nowadays. I Wish you a more open mind and a good health!

      @@fabriziodutto7508 I like how you express your ignorance so eloquently. lol

    • @AndyHullMcPenguin
      @AndyHullMcPenguin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@autodidact537 "Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."
      I think you will find that the term you profess to know so much about has more meaning than you are aware of.
      The "amanuensis" of the monks were not mere acts of scribes or secretaries, their work on manuscript and codexes was not simple duplication, but rather painstakingly executed and intricately worked. The word has other meaning in other contexts too. In that sense, the work on restoring this rather intricate and delicate mechanical work could be quite justifiably compared to the restoration and augmentation of the feats of others. The amanuensis here is in the art of restoration. Watch repair, or indeed any repair builds on the work of others, as does the transcription augmentation and repair of manuscripts.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanuensis
      I'll leave you to figure out who I am quoting.
