One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag.
Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle.

Sirius was a Gryfindor, not a Slytherin. All the marauders were Gryfindors.
Dementors are a physical representation of depression and chocolate has a chemical that helps your brain create more serotonin which is why it's supposed to help against the effect of dementors ( I suffer with depression and chocolate definitely helps)

Lupin was a great character, especially in the books....he was my favorite by this point, by far.
You are the first reactor I've seen who recognized that the deer was a patronus when it first appeared, which I found kind of impressive. You've already watched Goblet of Fire, I see, so it isn't a spoiler for me to say the story gets darker and more mature from this point. My suggestion is to stash some tissues at your chair, because this series can be absolutely gutting. Looking forward to the next installments! :)
You may have missed it, but it was shown in the second movie that Ron is scared of spiders ("I don't like spiders..."). In the books, it is explained why: when Ron was three, he broke Fred's toy broom, and he got angry and turned Ron's teddy into a spider.
As about boggarts, they may seem harmless, but the catch is that coping with them is easier for children. Children are scared of things like monsters, insects, snakes, etc., while adults have fears that can hardly be turned into something funny (like death of close people). In the book, Hermione's boggart is Professor McGonagall telling her that she failed all the exams (which shows that Hermione is more mature than her classmates)
My favorite things about Prisoner Of Azkaban:
1. The song "Double Trouble".
2. Hermione punching Malfoy right in his smug face.
3. The introduction of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black and David Thewlis as Remus Lupin.
4. Harry flying on Buckbeak's back over Hogwarts (SPECTACULAR scenery).
Also, I swear I heard "Asskaban" instead of Azkaban. 😂🤣
And I would not want to read a book that tried to read me first.
Now that you're done you should watch the 20th anniversary reunion.
A fun fact: There is a sex scene hidden in the credits of Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban. The Marauder’s Map shows the footsteps being traced in the halls of Hogwarts but at the bottom left there are 2 pairs of footsteps with 1 pair spread around the other. The movie was rated PG of course.( the part where written on the screen “senior painter /Steve Adamson)

When Remus Lupin was a small child his father passed laws against werewolves that made it almost impossible for them to live fairly normal lives. For revenge a werewolf named Fenrir Greyback bit little Remus Lupin & he too became a werewolf.
There was little hope that young Remus would be able to go to Hogwarts but Dumbledore said he could if precautions were put into place. A tunnel connecting the Shrieking Shack & Hogwarts was created & in the evenings before the full moon Remus Lupin was taken to the Shack were he could safely transform.
Remus also made 3 good friends while at Hogwarts. James Potter, Sirius Black & Peter Pettigrew & the 4 of them became the Marauders.
The friends soon noticed that Remus was disappearing during the full moon & figured out he was a werewolf. In order to keep him company when he was in wolf form his friends learned to change into animals - they became Animagi. James Potter’s animal form was a stag & his nickname was Prongs. Sirius Black turned into a dog & was called Padfoot. Peter Pettigrew transformed into a rat & became Wormtail. Remus Lupin took the nickname of Moony.
While they were transformed the 4 friends roamed the grounds & castle, discovering all of its rooms, secret passages & hidden features so they created the Marauder’s Map.
Peter Pettigrew ultimately sided with Voldemort & betrayed Lily & James Potter to prove his devotion. He knew where they were hiding since he was their Secret Keeper. Since James & Sirius were so close everyone assumed Sirius was their Secret Keeper & believed he had sold them to Voldemort.
You should really read the books or listen to the audiobooks once you’ve watched all the movies. The story of Harry Potter is so complex & rich & filled with nuances that the movies, though very good, simply cannot capture the true depth.
One thing you all deny to inform Ethan's Den is that the Marauders bullied Snape relentlessly.
Of course that hasn’t been mentioned. It comes up later in another movie. That’s the proper time to bring it up. Not now. Your comment is a mild spoiler. But since you did bring it up I’ll say that in the books it’s clear that Snape gave as good as he got. He was no innocent victim. There are passages in one of the books (no spoilers) that describe him cursing other students & joining in with his fellow slytherins as they torment the other kids. One passage tells of him laughing while his companions do something that is “evil” to a girl. That’s the exact word in the book - evil.
I’m not saying anymore & I’ll ask others to refrain as well since spoilers would be part of any discussion. I’m just noting that young Snape was not a helpless victim.

I know it sounds like any other book based movie haha, but there are important things missing that you would only get if you read the books, is so cool that you get into this world and you like it, I'm so happy to have new people getting in this world for the first time, here I let you the most important points maybe you missed by only watching the movie in case you'd like to know ...
- The people who wrote the marauder's map are, profesor lupin, sirius black, Peter petigrew and harrys dad (mooney, padfoot, wormtail and prongs), that's why lupin knows about the map that well, because he wrote it with his old firends, peter betrayed them, he only wanted to be part of the ''cool guys'' along with the other three.
- Lupin, Potter and Pettigrew made an unlicensed spell so they could turn into animals animagus (bc in the books all animagus have to have license to transform, like profesor McGonagall), but they did that undercovered, so they could be around Lupin when he transformed into a werewolf and keep the secret, since werewolves cannot choose to transform unlike animagus, and they spilled the rumour that that house was haunted so nobody could approach and find them, all the screams and stuff people talked about were not ghosts but them.
- The time turner was given to Hermione by profesor McGonagall, since staring third grade you have the option to have optional subjects, and Hermione didn't want to miss any (becase, you know, is hermione ) so McGonagall gave it to her, not before advising the danger of time travelling, but she really trusted her because Hermione was the smartest student (and maybe the smartest witch at the time).
- The patronus in the books is not that ''mirror kind'' of white light we see in this movie, there it a small part that is shield like, but most common and powerful is a corporeal one, all patronus have their own creature shape, harry's patronus is a stag deer, like the animal his father transformed into as an animagus, that's why he thought the one that he saw in the lake was his dad, because in the books sirius explains that to him. I thin this change was just a creative license Alfonso Cuaron took, maybe by that time he thought it wouldn't be an important change, but it was a huge one in fact , you will see in the next movies the importance of the patronus shapes. I won't spoil you more, but I wanted to clarify that.

Sorry if it was to large, but I really think these are the most important facts they cut off the book that really help people understand a little bit better all the things that happened in this movie. Sirius was truly innocent. He was framed by Pettigrew who stage his death (killing in the same time many passerby) after Sirius came after him when he betrayed James and Lily Potter. (Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, english isn't my first language😊)

A month late, but some important information that you only get from the books about Snape's connection with the Marauders: All of the Marauders except for Remus Lupin bullied Snape all through their school years. They absolutely tormented him. Remus was the only one not on board, but he admits that he knows he should have stood up for Snape but never did. One reason Snape truly hates Sirius Black is because Sirius went too far in one of these pranks and ended up sending Snape right into the Shrieking Shack when Lupin was transforming. Snape was nearly killed before James Potter got him out of there. The 'prank' wasn't intended to kill Snape, just to scare him, but Sirius risked Snape's life, James' life, and Remus' security and secret all in one go.
The creature is a Hippogriff named Buckbeak..👍😉...
The position of Defense Against The Dark Arts was cursed by Tom Riddle/Voldemort when he was turned down for the position when he graduated...ever since the position would only last 1 year for each professor...

In the Prisoner of Azkaban book, Professor McGonagall got permission from the Ministry of Magic to allow Hermione to borrow a Time Turner so that she may take as many classes as she like. But taking so many classes with the Time Turner began to take a large physical toll on Hermione. She was cramming almost 48 hours of living into a 24 hour day. She even started having a hard time staying awake during the day. By the very end of the book Hermione returned the Time Turner to Professor McGonagall not only because it was physically getting far too difficult to live that many extra hours in a single day but Hermione began to consider the Time Turner way too powerful of a temptation to use for other reasons. Like Hermione said to Harry, "Terrible things happens to wizards who meddle with time".

Excellent reaction Ethan, you did good reacting to this video and the plot twist tells you that Sirius Black is the innocent one after all, that it was Peter Pettigrew that was the sneaky guilty one that told Voldemort where Lily and James were hiding. Sirius, Lupin, and Pettigrew appear in later films. Your other viewers already explained what was in the books that didn't make it into the movie! You are ready to watch the next one The Goblet of Fire, teenage hormones ensue, some laughter, some drama, more plot twists and a turning point of a movie too. The kids were 15 when this was filmed. They are 13 in the films. That is a period of big change for teenagers. Daniel Radcliffe was 20 or 21 when the series finished. This particular movie was delayed in by a year. The growth is just the time between films. Still, I think they did a great job with this, doing one film a year probably wouldn't have been possible.

The Dementors were Rowling's vision of depression. Sucks all joy out of you and leave you with your worst memories .
Real chocolate contains a substance reminding of serotonine. (or was it oxytocine?) In the book the school nurse (Madame Pomfrey) admitted Hogwarts finally seemed to have got a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who knew his remedies!

Yeah. That intro scene was a bad idea. It not only breaks the canon that Harry is not allowed to use magic outside school in the books and previous movie, the explain it later in the same movie after he accidentally blows up Aunt Marge. 🤦♀️
Harry would have at least gotten a warning about controlling his magic if the adults hadn't been so worried about protecting him from Sirius. However, there's an Accidental Magic Reversal department in the Ministry for a reason. Younger witches and wizards often have trouble controlling their magic under extreme stress or emotions.
What they took away from Ron's character in this movie irritates tf out of me. *Ron* was the one who stood between Harry and Sirius in the shack..on a broken leg..not Hermione. All 3 of them cast spells at Snape, knocking him out abd Snape stayed unconscious until after the stag patronus chased the dementors away.
They kept the line where Sirius asks Lupin if he took his potion but completely left out the explanation of what potion he was talking about. It's the wolfsbane potion that helps a werewolf keep part of his mind so when the full moon appears Lupin would just curl up in his office and keep everyone safe including Lupin.
Draco ignores everything Hagrid said about how to safely approach a hippogriff and then claims it's the hippogriff's fault for attacking him.
Ron defended Hermione when Snape was so rude and earned himself a detention for it. There was no lightning at that Quidditch game with Hufflepuff in the book..but it was raining heavily at one of the Quidditch matches.

The intro scene was not a mistake. Magic isn’t 100% banned. The spell he is using in particular, is just lighting the end of his wand- which is something that they ARE allowed to do at any age.

Interesting.... How is the "wizarding world" connected to Muggle religions? Strange... I guess they don't believe in things like "god", "angels", etc. So why did the wizarding family baptize Harry and accordingly make Sirius his godfather?

Just to make you aware because the casting in the first movie didn't make it clear but Harry's parents were only 21 years old when they died. Why they cast his parents with much older actors? Who knows lol.

It's not explained in the films but Harry is better than Hermione at defence against the dark arts (and flying which Hermione hates!). Hermione could have use 'immobulus' as in the last film, to stop the whomping willow and Peter in rat form! All these new characters will return though.
