Sohyang was suffering the after effects of severe pneumonia while singing this song. She said in interview that she modified her mixed belt by using a lighter twangy belt so she could get through the performance without breaking. She did a truly admirable job and the arrangement by her and her team was amazing. To even go on stage being that I’ll was so brave.

This performance by the PHENOMENAL So Hyang is even more impressive because she IS NOT well here. Some time prior to this event, she had been released from the hospital, still recovering from her latest bout with pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not speak, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, she believed her singing career was over and wanted to sing one last time. Afterward, she was readmitted to the hospital.
So Hyang disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. When she returned in 2020, she continues to prove that her technique is rock solid.
In 2023, not only does she look fantastic, she sounds better than ever before. Her range is still ridiculous, and her breath control remains insane.

No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of.
The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh?
The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to really pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message.
Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for five sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and learned audio recording technique because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English.
Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤
Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! And don't we all know it!?!! 🎸👍💘🎸
Her health was not OK during that stage.. but the performance was beyond perfection!!

Still one of my favourite performances, Just so you know Sohyang was recovering from one of her many bouts of Pneumonia here. Amazing yes.
Can you believe it? She has suffering with pneumonia when this performance. . But it's true. .!!(She suffered from pneumonia about eight times between 2016 and 2018).. .

Shes been suffering bouts of pneumonia for yrs now but like a true professional she just soldiers on, she is responsible for all her arrangements of any song she performs LIVE, such an amazing ARTIST, she speaks hardly any English yet her enunciation in song is impeccable to say the least 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️

She is performing in front of Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after the performance. I understand he offered her the opportunity to tour with him. But Sohyang was unable to take up the opportunity due to health and other commitments.
Actually, Sohyang performed this before Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife.
She performed "Lean On Me" before Michael Bolton. 😉

I remember I was surprised to hear from her interview a few years ago that she had struggled with pneumonia and hesitated a lot to sing the song in the stage when she was proposed. Actually she was out to handle with the 8 times of chronicle sickness during around 3 years since that last performance.

I did not listen to the technical part. But in case someone has not told you, she has full blown pneumonia during this performance. She saw a DR at the hospital that day and he told her not to speak. She does not disappointing her fans or that one man who came t he’s three sing his song’s, she she pushed ahead and still did all of that with weak lungs and a bad throat.
