  • This video is Part 41 of the full Restoration of a 1979 Honda CBX.
NOTE - At 15:45, it appears that the "O" Ring was left out of the 3rd Carburetor Bowl. I caught the error during assembly and the O Ring was installed before the carbs were installed.
It features Part 1 of a 2 part video of the restoration and Installation process of a Honda CBX Carburetor assembly.
This video series is presented by Peter Rose, digitalpizza.com on the Frame off Restoration Process of classic Japanese motorcycles and classic American muscle cars including Honda CB 750, Honda CBX, CB1100F, CB900F and 1969 Camaro Z/28

Having just rebuilt my 1981 CBX carbs and reinstalled them, I found your video very valuable. Thanks! Of particular note is the attachment of the choke cable which is incorrectly shown (reversed end-for-end) in the 4th edition "how to" guide of a famous CBX specialist. If installed like he shows it WILL bind up. Yours is correct. Also, when installing the clamps on the intake tubes (rubber donuts) I find it best to place them on the tubes before installing the carbs. All of them can be accessed for tightening from the upper side of the donuts except for the #3 and #4 clamps on the head side which must be accessed from the lower side because of the engine mounting bosses in the head. Thanks again, great videos!

Amazing video. Wish I’d watched this before I restored mine. The pre install throttle cables and the wood trick would of saved me two days lol. I eventually figured it out just like you did. Except I used wood and a little screw jack lol. I couldn’t believe how tight those suckers fit.

I did my carbs years ago. They are a bit complex as a unit and a slight pain but so unique as is the whole engine...nothing else like it.

Nice video, wish it had been available when I did my carbs many years ago. A couple of things to note: I would do the accelerator pump while you're in there as they get a little stiff over time. Also would agree that you don't want to go cheap on the rebuild kit - the one I bought had some pretty sketchy plating and the profiles on the needles were horribly off. Since there should be no wear on the needles, I just re-used the originals. Great video and thanks!

23:30: I'm also using a hairdryer to heat up the rubber intakes, it makes them easier to cooperate with 🙂.
Im struggling a bit with the choke, since it does not rotate that smoothly. Looks like my choke axles on the carbs have a bit of a slack there, can these be tightened up?

The Honda manual suggests not re-using the choke valves, shaft and screws on the carburettors. How do you get round this as they are not available for replacement?

      Hi Todd
Yes, I will be posting a part 2 on the carbs this week.
The choke springs on the choke rods have opposite orientations. So there is a right and a left.
It’s important that when you close the choke flaps, the springs are set in a way that they tighten up freely without binding up on themselves which can happen if they are on the wrong side

I can’t seem to find Pt2 of the carby rebuild on your TH-cam channel.
    Have you completed it yet?
