    Due to TH-cam I caught a case of GAS for a few months and ended up buying a KOT, TS-808, Keeley BD2, Strymon Timeline, Vertex SSS, Katana clean boost, a JHS mid EQ/Boost and a Blues Jr amp... I don’t know what I was thinking, I don’t even own a guitar.

    I think as important as the order of the pedals is the speaker you use. Same order of the pedals, but another speaker and you get a complete other sound.

    I boost a MXR Badass Distortion with a Revv G2. It's amazing.
    I also have a SD1 which i sometimes use in front of the G2, but it's not too useful because it gets pretty noisy and i can simply dial the G2 to pretty much not need a SD1 in front.
    This into a EVH 5150 Iconic, which also has a built-in Boost, which I use as you did the King of Tone. Slight volume + gain boost.
    This is if I want to thrash with the clean channel. If I want to use amp gain, i use only one of the pedals set to low gain (like 9 o'clock) and just use the EQ to shape and tighten the tone. MXR Distortion if i want to shape the Red channel with some added dirt... G2 if I want to shape it with low gain. Both tighten up the sound excellently.
    Then i use either of those pedals if I want to add grit or more gain to the Ch1 crunch.
    Pretty solid. Gives me like 5 distinct "channels" from a 2 ch amp.
    I also have a Marshall MG30 cheap solud state. That one sounds really good with the Revv G2. And decent with the Badass and SD1 by themselves.

    I just watched this video again and something huge I got from it is, the last pedal in the chain is your core tone and the pedals before it can help sculpt the sound of your core tone. This is awesome, I never really thought of it like this before!

    I use a Helix, but basically use it like a clean amp pedal platform. I stack 4 pedals in front: 1) Fuzz (AWB) for occasional use almost always with Minotaur , 2) tone shaper (Prince of Tone or Heir Apparent) on all the time, used to shape the tone for different guitars, 3) mid boost (Klon or Minotaur) low drive, used to add mid boost and more saturation when needed, and 4) Timmy (Teemah!) for final tone shaping and to produce the "amp distortion". I like use pedals instead of the amp drive for distortion because I can stack them for different tones and saturation levels, and I have more control over the distortion tone. With all these drives, I try to use the minimum amount of distortion needed for the song.

      Yesss! For high gain sounds try the Bogner Ecstasy Red, Friedman pedals or even the Wampler Pantheon with a screamer or Archer in front of it. Killer tones!

  • @bo1ivarj
    @bo1ivarj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My base tone is a Marshall-type crunch (prefer amp drive over pedal) similar to Malcolm Young's rhythm tone so not gainy at all. When I need more saturation, I boost it with an MXR Super Badass. When I'm plugged into an amp that cannot give me the Marshall crunch, I will use my Lovepedal Jubilee for said base tone, and again I boost it with the Super Badass. I know it's more typical to stack a lower gain pedal into a higher gain pedal, but for me, this works well, especially with the 3-band EQ on the SB.

    Great and useful video, thanks a lot ! :D
    My first step into the world of stacking drive pedals was a Visual Sound Double Trouble, which is basically 2 Tubescreamers in a single box (blew my mind at the time, such a thick sound !), which i quickly began to use to boost a Wampler Triple Wreck, offering me the metal tone i was searching for a long time.
    As of now, my favorite is probably the Boss Waza Blues Driver into the Boss Waza Metal Zone into Gain 1 of the Victory VX Kraken, all 3 with fairly few gain, but the result is way more than the sum of the 3.
    Cheers and keep on the great content, watching you talk gear is always a pleasant moment ! :)

    Very very informative thank you very much!!!!!! i use affordable pedals for my VOX AC15C1 like the Boss DS-2, Boss OD-3, GE-7 EQ, EHX Double muff, Rat etc and i get an endless palette of sounds just by changing their order. I rarely use all of them together but i almost always use my eq pedal. EQ pedals are the swiss army knife for tone shaping....

    Hi and a big hello all the way from Malaysia, Kris. Great video, love the tones u r getting from all the pedals. Just wanna share the way I stack my drive pedals. I have a Sinvertek N5 that I use for solos, volume set high but gain set quite low so it's overdriven but on the verge of distortion. I have a Mooer Cruncher with the volume set just above unity, gain set quite high. I use this for power chords /fills and also to boost the Sinvertek N5, getting more gain plus volume. These 2 pedals are all I need to go from squeaky clean(bypass everything) to saturated distortion. 😁😁

  • @fraenkiboii
    @fraenkiboii 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I basically do the exact same thing. I like to put full-range or amp-emulating pedals at the end of the chain and then push them with overdrives having a specific EQ characteristic, like a mid hump, for instance. I've got three ODs in my chain: Mythos Mjolnir (Klone) => Thorpy The Dane (Boost with Low Control + medium OD) => Snouse BlackBox (Bluesbreaker). Its gives me so many working combinations. Most of the time I leave the Dane-Boost on, because it fattens a strat sound significantly.

    Great episode, man. Good script and focus and nice choice of gear. Keep it up.
    And kudos for using the foxcatcher. I just learned about it on JHS's show and was impressed. If you're inclined to talk about it more, maybe even demo it using different amps/guitars, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested...

    I use a spark mini booster into my od/distortion. I control the level of overall gain with the guitar volume for base tone then for leads I use my effects loop jumped with input and output volume matched around 11:00 to 12:00 for leads. I use the Bassman channel of my fender super sonic and get monstrous tones.

    Wow thanks i really enjoyed that video,
    My favorite stacks are the Maxon OD-808 in front of the Horizon Precision Drive that is tight!!
    Also The Boss SD-1 in front of the Proco Rat!!
    The SD-1 the most versatile overdrive on my board it sound good on any setup,
    An interesting thing i do is mixing different levels of different drive pedals in parallel with the boss LS-2 !
    What i really want to try now is the JHS Double Barrel wich is basically the Moonshine and the Morning Glory in one box. Those are based on respectively a TS808 and a Marshall Blues Breaker 😅

    I use the Bogner Ecstasy Blue and Red pedals for my main low and high gain sounds and sometimes boost them with a tubescreamer. Especially the Ecstasy Blue gets some really nice extra sustain and gives you that lovely "Lukather single soil"-sound!

    Great video Chris! I use three Pedal stack tricks. 1. Tumnus deluxe into a Wampler Belle over Drive (Flatter mids). 2. Boss SD1w on custom setting (Lower mids growl) into a Mostortion (TS Style sound with really amazing chewiness and transients - this is my favorite). 3. Ibanez TS 808 into a MXR Super Badass Distortion for my higher gain stuff. I can really just about achieve all the sounds you need on guitar with these. Oh… Also, very important. Playing a volume pedal against the guitars volume knob (no treble bleed pots) will yield a whole other sonic dimension to all three of these combinations. Try them and see. Please leave a comment I’d love to hear your thoughts. 🤘

    Kris. Just found this video today. I'm just put my first pedalboard together today. I ended up stacking my BBE Green Screamer to Boss Blues Driver to my trusty old Keeley Super AT MOD. My amps are two Pignose G40vs on ABY switch with junk stock speakers-plan on swapping those out- It's sounding pretty good. Earlier tonight I had the Super AT MOD and the Blues Driver switched around. It sounds a lot better with the Keeley at the end of the chain. Thanks man.

    Fantastic video, I'm not into time based effects or modulation too much. However I really love gain stacking. Problem is I run 3 amps simultaneously, Carvin X-50B with 4x12 cab, Marshall JCM800 4010 combo with a DV-77 speaker, and a Peavey stereo chorus 2x12. The gain stack for now is first to last, Ibanez Nu-tube screamer, MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive, Boss HM2, Boss SD1, MXR EVH 5150. Those are run through the loop section of the Revv G8 gate. On a Earthquaker Swissthings pedal to Split to 2 amps. Now I have a MXR stereo chorus on the second loop of the Swissthings, so off the mono out on the MXR Chorus I run the Peavey amp off that. Not the most ideal way to run it, but until I find a switching unit that I can afford this is how it is lol.
    Any input on this signal chain would be greatly appreciated. Can't believe I missed this video, I love your content, Cheers!

    I love the content..I really hope you can help. I'm new to the tone chasing, I've spent my career with a 50 watt marshall tube head and very few pedals and was perfectly content. But now I'm older and want a bluesier tone so I dove into the pedal platform arena. I love that Hendrix/Texas tone, but I'm not an SRV clone. So with much research I got a victory duchess V40 ,a cheap clone and a tube screamer. My guitars I'm using a core John Mayer silver sky and a 96 USA lonestar strat. Contrary to what you advise I use my clone as my rithym crunch then into my TS for lead boosting. I seem to be on the right track but rolling off volume to clean up my clone crunch is just not happening, It just sounds like crap,I find myself doing the tap dance trying to stomp all these pedals for dynamics. Is it because my clone sux? It's a 40 $ wish clone but it's sounds great.I've thought about upgrading to a J Rockett ,a centavo, or a tumnus , but I didn't know if my pedal order is screwing me up or if it's my choice in clones? I've even considered a prince of tone to replace my cheap clone, supposedly I can roll off with the prince. But I've also heard great things about the Nobles ODR. I know alot of this is personal preference, but I need some direction. Please,my head is spinning, lend me your expertise, I would be forever greatful.

    I have a Mooer Cruncher (CrunchBox type pedal) with a mid/almost high gain setting and use my TS808 clone to boost the volume and tight the sound a bit for my lead tone. I do that when I'm using a clean amp, but when I use the drive from the amp, I use it in a low gain setting to be able to clean it up nicely with my volume knob on my guitar, then I use the Mooer in also a low gain setting to get a more distorted sound, but I don't like how it responds, I can't use the TS because I use it for solos, which pedal should I buy? I'm thinking in a Boss BD-2 or a Klon type pedal

    Interesting video. What kind of drive the Boss BS2 is? What additional drive you would stack it with, and in which order? Beside that, I have also an Apocalypse fuzz that's first in the chain (does not work well in other positions) and I rarely stack it with the BD2. So, an other option would be to add a boost (fuzz > boost > BD2). Any recommendation?

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      paolo caputo The Blues Driver is an overdrive with quite some tele (EDIT: sorry, I mean treble) and low end. It also lacks some midrange. The order is great how you have them: the BD2 should be right at the end (last drive pedal) and most fuzz pedals work best at the front.
      You could try a clean boost between them or even a drive with more mids, just to have that option too. If you’re looking for a great clean boost with some tonal options check out the Xotic Super Clean and the Super Sweet (Watch my latest video for those) and if you want something midrangey, the Tube Screamer (and all the TS type pedals of other brands) will be good.

    (long post alert)
    At the moment I have 3 gain pedals at hand. TC Electronic MojoMojo, TS808 made in late 80ties (which is not mine and I have to return it soon) and EQD Bows.
    I use this in front of Marshall 15h (no FX loop). The problem with this amp is, that clean channel has very little break up and gain channel have too much breakup and gain.
    So I use the EQD bows kinda like my first pre-amp tube of my "crunch" channel. It has on its own kinda tuby and very nice breakup if pushed by other pedals. And my "fx loop" for delay, tremolo and reverb is between EQD and my amp.
    I run the MojoMojo first with as much gain as I like and then into TS808 with some gain and volume at noon. I found out, that when I push MojoMojo with something in front it has too much bass end and amp just "farts" because of it. But when I run it intu TS, the lowend is shelved and top end bit smoothed and it sounds perfect.
    So now I have clean sound (no drive pedals) onto that I can run MojoMojo for bit of breakup and TS808 for lead boost.
    Then I have my "crunch" channel when I engage the EQD bows, I can push it with the other pedal for more breakup and stauration.
    And I have my high gain sound (without reverb and delay) with my gain channel pushed with TS808.
    I have to get some good pedal in the place of 808, Im thinking about Keeley Red Dirt mini.
