I wonder what the deal is. Luke Thomas does in depth footage breakdowns but I believe he gets flagged by youtube and has to keep appealing as fair use to get the videos back which i'm sure is annoying.

Makhachev is one of the best strikers in the UFC. He may not be flashy but he knows how to hit and not get hit 👍🏽
He's not that good. The threat of takedowns gives him a big advantage. He's mid-tier amateur at best.
@@Gojimaru up until fighting vold his strike defence was really high, his striking accuracy is higher than the best strikers and his knocking fighters down and out. Beats each fighter at his own game. Name a better striker in LW?

What’s the point of having a discussion of ‘if it’s boxing only’ or ‘if it’s submission grappling only’? It’s called mixed martial arts, not split martial arts..
I’m not saying Makhachev is the best striker in his division.. but at least keep the parameters of the discussion meaningful, please..
@@saifaldin_ He's an average striker in mma. In pure striking he's an amateur. His main striking advantage is that he's a southpaw and that nobody wants to wrestle with him. That's about it. Does it work for him? Sure. He keeps it simple, which is a good thing. His good defensive stats come from people trying to keep distance and counter him.
no one knows if Porier has good take down defense because we've never seen him try it.

I'd love to see Porier retire as undisputed champ, he deserves it but Islam seems unbeatable at LW and maybe even WW. He improves every time and beats each fighter at his own game. But hey it's the right game, one mistake means anything can happen.

the hardest part about prognosticating is you never know what most of fighters will do. will they do the thing they should? or the thing they want to? some guys you know absolutely some you just think you do. will islam try to strike with dustin? will dustin try to defend takedowns rather than pull gilly? if you knew those answers for certain you could bet your house pretty safely on this fight.
Not a single human today are certain whether they will be alive tomorrow or not, what makes you think they will know exactly what the outcome of this fight would be?

Excellent commentary!👍In my opinion, the reason why Dustin Poirier is not able to work on mat wrestling/grappling defense against someone like Makhachev is due to Dustin Poirier having major hip mobility issues. Because of Dustin's previous hip injury.
Also, it is Makhachev's overall physicality and ground control pressure that is a bad matchup for Dustin Poirier. The only way anyone else will be able to beat Makhachev is if they match Makhachev's overall physicality and pressure, have slightly better stand-up skills, and are a more elite mat wrestler than Makhachev. That type of fighter still does not exist in the division. But someone will eventually come along to beat Makhachev. It is only a matter of time.

@@jm12green31Of course, I have. Arman is one of the only fighters that has ever taken down and controlled Makhachev. But I just don't think Arman has the finishing ability as far as submissions or striking to beat Makhachev. Plus, Makhachev's striking has improved since Arman and him last fought.
Honestly, I can't stand Makhachev. I have been wanting him to loss for a while now. Unfortunately, I just don't think there is any fighter in that division that can beat Makhachev right now.
Like I said, "Eventually someone will come along and beat Makhachev." But I just don't think it's going to be Dustin or Arman.

Makachev believes that he is invincible. When he's not. And there is always someone better that comes along to humble fighters like Makachev.

If there's one reason I want Dan Hardy back working for the UFC - it's so that he can get the permission to use the fight footage to break down.
It just hit harder when he could break down moves step by step with the videos.
Still love the channel - but would like to see this come back.
I think Dustin needs to channel his inner Chuck Liddell and keep it standing. Mixing his punches to the head and body while also mixing in kicks to the legs and arms of Makochev. Battering the arms will make it harder for Makochev to grapple effectively.
For that to happen, Poirier’s timing needs to improve by a lot.. Makhachev is good in distance management.

I see Islam being patient, picking his shots, counter a couple and knock Poirier out in the second or 3rd. He is so confident in his skillset that I think his goal is to show that the Volk headkick was not luck. He is going to come out with the perfect game plan, trait a little, counter and knock Justin out! Bit if it goes to the ground, Islam will choke him with a Guilly, just tp show him how to do it and too make a point about those that always talk him down.

I hope Poirier's team has a strategy for how to counter the leg entanglement from Islam once he gets it to the ground.
They don't. They just hope for Makhachev to overextend on the feet so Poirier can counter him with a straight left or a right hook. If Makhachev gets the bodylock, the fight's over.

DP needs to get funky and aggressive once it hits the ground. Chain wrestling works best when the opponent is predictably defending.

Excellent breakdown. I think we all know what is going to happen, but man I'd probably break down and cry if Diamond manages to pull this one off. If I were him and I won this fight, I'd retire on the spot. It wouldn't be the same as a guy retiring in his prime as soon as he won a title. Dustin has nothing left to prove, and everyone knows that if he fought Islam ten times, Islam will take most of those wins. Some would argue that it wouldn't be fair to Islam to beat him and then run, but I think it's a bit different when an older fighter does it. We get so mad at these guys when they won't retire on a high note, what could possibly be higher than winning the title off a future hall of famer?

I don't think most high level fighters can really fight against type like Dan is suggeting... Dustins path to victory is that he's the odd southpaw who is really good against other southpaws - specifically with the exact lead hook that KO'ed Makachev before. He also probably can't anti-wrestle against anyone (much less Makachev) as his hips seem shot, so jumping the guillotine is probably his best way to get makachev to expend energy and a good post to walk-walk against the fence. Problem is he'll probably give his back there.
Dustin has to play his game and maximize his weapons, southpaw v southpaw is usually really awkward, so there's a chance to catch Islam (who prefers neat and controlled striking) there, especially if he can reverse him on the fence.
That being said, I think Islam will get many more chances to choke Poirier as he's getting up, than Poirier will get chances to land the lead hook on a fence reversal... So Islam by RNC :-)

Basically, Poirier has a puncher’s chance, but that’s it. With the possible exception of close range boxing, Islam outclasses him everywhere.
dan you are overthinking this one. dustin is going to try and spark him early, thats his only shot and i think hes well aware of that. if it ends up going to the fundamentals and analytics dustin cant win. the ONLY reason perhaps this fight might go differently than expectations is if he knows he cant win the long game.
while i wish you would have simply talked about dustins chances of actually sparking islam, i understand the analysis. but lets be real, dustin should be working on 10% takedown defense 90% gameplanning the finishing shot

Dustin had a hard time getting up and often didn’t against Mike Chandler. Islam is much more dangerous on the ground than Mike. I love Dustin and would lose my mind if he wins but I just don’t see it. I don’t think Dustin will be able to get up against Islam so I hope he is tries like hell to stay standing up.
