Not sure why Dan keeps telling himself that Strickland isn’t big. It’s actually amazing how much Sean has filled out. He’s not built like a weightlifter but he’s a thick dude. He didn’t look small against Izzy and he looked the same size or bigger against DDP. I’ve yet to see anyone physically push him around or outsize him aside from Alex who’s comically big for MW
Hes had a weird anti Strickland bias for a while. I remember his pre Adesanya fight analysis and it was pure disrespect and then after Strickland won and made it look easy, he wouldn't give Sean real credit without throwing in backhanded compliments. I don't get it. Strickland is a good fighter. Dan would have you believe he's a 0 power volume machine with ugly technique. His technique is crisp. It's just not traditional in MMA, he has power too.
Yeah, and I’ve never seen Costa as one of the biggest MWs either. He’s heavy and muscular, but his frame is average at his weight class. He has 72” reach, which is below average, and he is not particularly wide shouldered either. He doesn’t have very thick legs either. He even looked kinda small against Adesanya, who’s tall but very light for a MW. DDP is probably bigger than him, and Strickland is at least as big as Costa (not as lean, tho). Rockhold looked similar or even slightly bigger compared to him as well. Fighters on the bigger ends of their division can usually move up a weight class, but Costa would be dwarfed if he moved to LHW.
@@mrwabbit9576 I don't think it's anti-strickland bias. Strickland had shown nothing noteworthy before that fight with Adesayna and that could very easily be classified as a fluke based on both of their histories and Stricklands first defense. Strickland is a gatekeeper who got lucky. This fight is Stricklands chance to show everyone that he belongs with the big boys but I personally don't think he will do that.
To each his own. His fights to me are like watching paint dry. Ugly style indeed, he stands like boris Karloff in the mummy. And he only ever throws 3 strikes. Reminds me of when we first got mortal combat in the 90s and my sister could beat everyone by spamming the light low kick
It's because Strickland actually fights realistically and efficiently. All this flashy shit doesn't really serve you in actual combat. I love watching him fight
So how many professional mma fighters have you seen fight like him? Mma is as realistic as sports get and I've never seen anyone like him fight like that. What about boxing? You ever seen a pro boxer stand like that or throw nothing but arm punch straights? I never have, but I guess boxing isn't realistic
Think as you said, have come around to both over time. Removed enough to enjoy whoever wins and it should be a good fight, each style can bring the best out of the other.
Strickland's style looks very much like old fashioned Kung Fu plus the boxing guard/jab. Not Shaolin Kungfu or anything high flying, but Xing Yi and Ba Ji.
I think I heard someone compare it to wing chun once, and personally Ive noticed similarities between Sean's style and Ancient Greek Pankration (as it was actually practiced, not the weird modern version). Pankration was basically a fusion of Boxing, Wrestling, and a very Muay Thai esque Kickboxing. Sean's modified Philly shell, pawing defensive screen, stiff long range jabs, use of teeps, all strongly resemble the depictions of Pankration on pottery and bas reliefs.
Comes back to “Philly shell” for me. Bc it’s not a Philly shell. Not even really inspired unless you simply mean high shoulder. And that’s why so many boxers not from mayweathers gym tree get in trouble attempting it. Costa is comfortable in the pocket and trading. Sean is going to have the technical edge there but he shines often closing distance which isn’t something costa is protecting. 2 areas costa will likely exploit that Sean’s defense is uniquely susceptible to is a reverse 1-2 and a very simple “gazelle” punch I just call it. Overhand version of Razor’s smash punch. Bc Sean isn’t really in a Philly shell (simply bc the glove differences makes it impossible), costa can, and has in the past, end sequences with a short left and begin attacking the high shoulder . This changes the rhythm and gets Sean doing that arm extension thing that is effective against shots from orthodox fighters on his high shoulder side but he’s completely vulnerable looping shots on his glove defense side. This basically recreates the scenario that nearly decapitated him against Pereira. Further he can end with power right hand in a reverse 1-2-1 . We saw this very effective for Mosley until Floyd figured it out but one of the rare times he wobbled in a proper Philly shell. Problem is costa didn’t throw many combinations vs Whitaker. His best bet aside from this is the next one. A gazelle leaping shot. Where we find an example especially against an inspired shell would be the likes of Broner who also extended his arms which was very effective. However he had no answer for maidonna’s leaping punch exploiting the shell inspired lean with arms extended. Why this is effective for costa is bc he doesn’t mind staying in range and why Izzy couldn’t figure it out. Jared beat Sean the same way in many respects. Watch that back you’ll notice he did both of these. He led with the right hand. Sean extends his arms after a jab which blocks the follow up right. But if you lead with it, coming around the side is effective even more so leaping to beat the lean which is how maidonna kicked out Broner down multiple times. Seans defense is great but ppl make too much of it. Where Sean is better than just about every guy on the roster imo and I’m not his biggest fan is his ability to hit on the move. He’s going to snap costa’s head back so many times with that. Even his jab which is effective is really only SO effective bc it often comes on the move or as an outright counter to disrupt. Sean’s reduces reach advantages to nil with his ability to his going backwards and forwards accurately and is going to spell major trouble for a guy like costa with limited reach compared to other guys over 76 inches. Someone is going to sleep. No WAY it goes the distance. Sean will either open up at will or costa’s power will find its home on the button. But imo costa won’t fight pragmatically and will continue to put himself in danger. I tend to think costa will land a big shot but only if he can before Strickland can all but close his left eye.
@TW7S95 if you look at it logically it kind of makes sense , when your gassed you can't defend against shots aswell and that's when a lot of knock outs happen. Diaz bros never gas in fights cuz they never go all out and put everything into their strikes. So they don't ever tire to where they are vulnerable.
Hahahaha so true, people quickly forgot what style Sean used in most of his fights before facing Adesanya. He’s gonna make a big powerful guy like Costa walk around the octagon for 25 mins unless he gets pulled into a brawl like Dricus did
I think there is really good chance that it will go into decision.. Costa will gas out and Sean doesn't have that KO machine reputation. So I think Sean Strickland win by decision..
Costa has good genetics but to say he has more muscle than Sean is a mistake. We just think he does due to proportions and fat placement. Sean is really thick, would make a good rugby player.
Costa landed 8 strikes to the body against Whittaker. No combos either. He basically turned into a jab and leg kick at range fighter for most of that fight and thats a tough strategy to use for someone with trex arms like Costa
*It should be noted that Paulo hasn't finished an opponent in SIX YEARS while Sean stopped Abusupiyan Magomedov just last year, and was VERY CLOSE to stopping Izzy. Costa also lost 3 of his last 4, and only won against a washed up Luke Rockhold. I can't see Costa winning this fight.*
Big problem with Costa is he doesn't use his physical strength to take people down. He wants to strike and entertain which is great but the fighters that win consistently incorporate boring fighting into their repertoire

Name one fight where Strickland hit the body effectively please. Can we have analysis based on facts and not just how you kinda sorta feel someone fights
Yeah honestly I've been watching these for a while and I really feel like Dan has gotten lazier with these analyses. Like adesanya did? The issue with body kicks and head kicks is that you need to be in kicking range. Sean often pressured into boxing range and therefore stifles the kick. Also body and head kicks cost a fair bit of energy to throw, especially relative to straight punches. So if you don’t hurt Strickland with them he’ll drown you with the bigger stamina bar
