Paying 16 mill for one back when you can get the same production by paying 2 or 3 RB's 3 million a year and save money for other positions. Anyone who pays a rb big money is stupid those deals never work.
Uhh, to be fair, I think the Colts really thought there was a better than even chance that Andrew Luck would come back.... Take a year off, get healthy, come back.... Team bringing in O Linemen, after all the years..... So, they didn't DARE ask for the money back.... They needed him to be in a good mood, to come back.... We've all seen how ugly the Megatron thing is..... You ask for that money back, it's like setting off a thermonuclear device in the middle of that bridge.... It's never getting rebuilt, ever, it's contaminated with radiation for 1000 years..... So, I'm not sure that really applies here... They didn't do that to be "good guys"... They did that because they thought Luck would come back.... And, it seems clear the colts know they are going to stink this year. They know. The last thing they need is to pay a lot for a running back.... Not that I agree with that, but, it feels like that is their thinking.....
For me whats crazy is how much teams are willing to pay players like justin herbert recording setting deals but they cant pay austin ekeler. Im sorry but justin herbert is not 12 times more important to the chargers than him.
the colts are just doing everything they can to be sub-par this season...baffling after scoring anthony richardson! they looked at a solid offense forming and when JT asked for the paycheck he was promised, they saw their opportunity to mess things up
No, they saw the opportunity to not get themselves into a bad contract. No teams needs a great running back to have a good run game. NFL fans needs to start catching onto that. The Chiefs just won a SB with a 7th round rookie RB. Prime example of not needing a great RB to have a good enough run game. That is what modern teams do. The colts are heading in the right direction. We want to be the Chiefs with Pacheco. Not the Titans with Derrick Henry.
Do you watch the NFL? Do you watch the Colt's? Did you say the same thing when the Colt's traded Faulk and drafted Edge? JT is a diva, hurt and on his rookie contract... He has no leverage, none. Shit is so dumb and he is actively ruining his career.
I think the Colts really, really want to draft Marvin Harrison Jr next year so they aren't too worried about being good this year. They want to end up around pick number 3 to 6 while giving their rookie qb a season to learn and make mistakes without too much pressure to win. Kinda like Peyton's rookie season.
I've been a Colt''s fan for a very long time.. I am finding it very hard to continue to be one. I don't know what Irsay is trying to do here but just pay the dude. The team can more than afford it. Taylor is well worth it. Ugh..... This isn't good for the team and like Brandon said there's a little bit of blame on both sides.
It's far easier for me to get behind Taylor. If you can do a job and do it well, you should try to maximize your income when you're at your prime. But unlike those of us who might have a decades long career in some industry, Taylor has basically one chance to grab the bag. Irsay was born into wealth, which explains his substance abuse and other sketchy behavior.
Very long time you say? You must remember how we traded Faulk and drafted Edge. You must remember how we let Edge walk and won a SB the following season with Addai/Rhodes. You must remember us drafting JT right after Marlon Mack had a 1k yard season. We will survive without JT. We’ll get a replacement real quick.
@@king_supreme1102 I do. Though that is a vastly different situation from now. We don't have Manning. Rookie QB needs a good run game. Don't get me wrong. I'm not crazy about how Jonathan is choosing to handle this. I just think with the threat of him back there it will make things easier for the rookie QB.

Also the Colts have $20m in cap room and a projected $70m next year …Irsay has been pretty frugal aside from paying money to a new QB every year
Pay all players the same amount and offer incentives based on performance. This way no one will complain about not making as much money as other players. The rise of drama centered around the players and their "lack" of money is troubling and might be the downfall of the NFL in the future if fans grow weary of these situations.
@@Hawksonsucks69 No, the point is solid. Look at USFL and XFL to see how all the players get paid the same other than incentives based on performance. So, tell me how your league minimum in any way works like what I'm proposing from the USFL and XFL?
I wish teams were allotted $8 million that wouldn't be counted against the cap space and that could only be used on running backs. Why do we have to hear these anti-RB narratives whenever we hear about RBs wanting to be paid their worth? Regardless of position, JT is a great player for the Colts and pulls a lot of weight for the team. I bet If JT was a WR or TE, literally no one would talk about his injury history or his "replaceablility".
Because position does matter and these "anti-RB narratives" literally formed because of a long history of RBs getting paid and their production dipping only for their backup to step in and shine. We literally saw this play out with the Cowboys. They paid Zeke and he immediately started to decline and then his backup, 4th rounder Tony Pollard started to significantly outproduce him.
@@unc54 Long history? Zeke is the only player I can think of this happening to. And besides, that happens at literally EVERY position. No offense, but I'm pretty certain that's not true. I'm open to being proved wrong on this, but I don't think I am. Mostly because it's people repeating narratives without questioning them.
I don’t think it’s they don’t want to pay him or that they can’t I thinks it more cause they want to try to cap the running back market don’t you think they also are aware of the situation Taylor’s is trying to do sure they can pay him as they can afford it
Not really. I mean, people do know Clark Hunt, Robert Kraft, Shahid Khan, Stan Kroenke, Jerry jones, and most of them are not a problem for their team (I put most because Jerry Jones is debatable on that with the Cowboys fans)
Brandon's points make no sense though. All of the teams who signed RBs to those massive contracts regretted it, so what leverage does Taylor have coming off a down year and with injury issues. On top of that the market for RBs is currently falling with multiple elite RBs this offseason being tagged rather than getting large contracts so there is no reason why they can't wait until after the season to negotiate. It's not like other positions where waiting a year means you might be paying 10% more. And the Colts have a running QB on top of that which means they don't need an elite RB because the QB's impact in the run game means that life will be easier for the currently rostered RBs.
He’s coming off a year where he rushes for less than 900 yards struggled to stay healthy and a whopping 4 touchdowns. Would be a different story if he had replicated his sophomore season. The production he put out last year was essentially replacement level. He should be better this year but he’s a running back getting older, not a guarantee I would trade him. Get another draft pick and try to rebuild long term around Anthony Richardson, as by the time he is fully developed Taylor will likely be on the downside of his career
You’re drafted to play the rookie contract. Not drafted to be entitled to another. Still doesn’t annoy me more than how Zach Martin made the decision to sign a contract and is now backing out when HE is the one that signed it. If you wanted more ask for more before you sign it. When you sign it, the “market” is then irrelevant. You already signed.
They get every penny they deserve it’s literally a market, if they deserved more then teams would pay it to get the competitive advantage, but paying running backs puts you at a disadvantage so no one wants to do it
I'm in favor of incentive based contracts in situations like this coming off injury and unable pass a physical. ... He has no leverage . If he comes back and say has a 10 mill bonus for 1500 yds that would boost his base salary up and both sides win and set him up for a long term contract . Then he would have leverage
The colts haven't said once he has a back injury, you are using a local Indianapolis beat reported who clearly blew this one. They also never said they aren't paying him. The media has said both.
Jim is worried about spending 2r million dollars on a God damn whale. Instead of paying Taylor at least 11 million dollars a year. Hmmm makes you wonder why they wouldn't. Hell, he has 3,841 rushing yards in 3 seasons. Jin wants to bring in washed up old QB'S and put most of all the work on Taylor. If Jim doesn't pay him and let's Taylor get trade. I hope the Colts will finish in last place and Taylor racking up 1,200 yards with his new team. Then Jim can kick himself in his on @$$
the problem is the 2 top RBs help in the passing game ALOT. JT can't block or catch. hardly little help in the passing game. so why should he get paid like a pass catching back when he is a first and second down back only? this is so strange. plus the dude has been hirt for a yr now and still is hurt. what are they thinking? team first lol
I was arguing with someone today before some of this has come out. I was wrong, while they aren't paying AR5, they have the money. Pay JT but only give him 3 more years so he can be gone IF Anthony turns out great.
The story here is JT is on the final year of his rookie deal at a bad time. The Colts want to hold off on a big contract while they figure out what they have and where Taylor fits in their offense. If they suck, why hand out a new expensive contract to an RB while they'll be rebuilding? If the offense is anything like the Eagles, why pay a lead back when RB by committee can work? Before hiring Steichen, Ballard alluded to a new deal for JT. After hiring him & drafting AR, Ballard has said they want to see where they are before any new deals.
Jim Irsay and Dan Snyder are proof that being rich has nothing to do with "hard work" and everything to do with getting lucky and taking advantage of people.

Football is the ONLY profession where bodily harm will get you paid LESS. If the position assumes more risk, it should also assume more reward. Not paying the work horses of your profession is criminal
The only reason risky positions get paid more is there less supply of workers willing to take the risk, that’s the opposite of the problem with NFL running backs where there are too many good ones so there’s no need to pay extra money
Love Perna but it's lame running with the well worn "insane Irsay" theme. Colts haven't had a contract issue in years cause Irsay pays his players. He let Luck walk with $20+ mil he could have asked for Luck to return. Where's that story?
Jim Irsay should've just kept his mouth shut. Or not typed anything. Although he is correct in a way regarding the current CBA. But when you're RB is as talented as Taylor and he's on his last year of his rookie deal you say nothing. Hopefully they figure something out in a new CBA. Until then no owner wants to do what Jerry Jones did and overpay your RB.
I’ll tell you what’s really going on. Jim is more worried about a whale than his team. Oh yeah and he’s clearly burned the f*** out. Cocaine is a helluva drug😂
If the QB market is going up, the WR market is going up, and the HB market stays the same there's not choice but to dramatically increase the cap. You can't fit all that in the NFL without dramatically raising the cap. Well, the NFL just made a TON off TV/Streaming rights. That's a ton of profit. Well, it's less profit if you dramatically increase the cap. What do you do? Dramatically lower the HB while raising the WR and it's almost a 1 for 1 deal. As the WR market went up the teams forced the HB market down. And I say forced because all teams just quit paying it. HB's didn't ask for less they just quit getting what they were asking for. This isn't a natural progression of economics - it's an artificial devaluing of the position.

They are not underpaid or undervalued, they are being paid what the market has set. Indy didn't play any different with him playing or his backups. The fact that no one else will pay them what they want shows they are asking for more then their worth. I wish you would stop saying "pay them a FAIR amount". Just because they want a certain amount doesn't mean it's fair. That's not how any job works.
Linemen are more important than RB and yet you dont hear them crying about being ao undervalued that people scarcely know who they are on the team.
RBs aren’t underpaid. Every other position is overpaid.
Yes he is. Importance to every play, longevity, ratings, ticket sales, etc.
Yeah he’s probably more than than 12x more important.
the colts are just doing everything they can to be sub-par this season...baffling after scoring anthony richardson! they looked at a solid offense forming and when JT asked for the paycheck he was promised, they saw their opportunity to mess things up
No, they saw the opportunity to not get themselves into a bad contract.
Jim is a hot mess
You're a hot mess brother
Spanos is still the worst owner in the NFL
My biggest complaint is that you never said a word about Ballard, THE GUY SIGNING THE PLAYERS! However, it’s always funny and entertaining.
As a fan of an AFC team that isn’t the colts I also hope they sign him to a long term deal so my team doesn’t, paying running backs doesn’t pay off
Very long time you say? You must remember how we traded Faulk and drafted Edge. You must remember how we let Edge walk and won a SB the following season with Addai/Rhodes. You must remember us drafting JT right after Marlon Mack had a 1k yard season. We will survive without JT. We’ll get a replacement real quick.
@@king_supreme1102
I do.
Though that is a vastly different situation from now. We don't have Manning.
Rookie QB needs a good run game. Don't get me wrong. I'm not crazy about how Jonathan is choosing to handle this. I just think with the threat of him back there it will make things easier for the rookie QB.
As another Colt's fan, please go ahead and root for another team. Taylor's ass isn't getting the bag he thinks he is here, bye diva!
Look. JT has been great for the Colts. However, running backs don't have the longest shelf life. Committing a butt ton of money and years to a player that, in all reality isn't going to win you a championship, is smart.

The real problem is solidarity. Only players who care about the RB apocalypse is RBs. On top of RBs being the unsung heroes of their teams playing at all times receiver/lineman roles as well as their position, they are chucked to the garbage when they receive a injury that their position as a duel role player entail. Hopefully in a few years, when QBs demand 80 million per year for mediocre play, new contract lengths will be put in place to give RBs more room for negotiation and the ability to capitalize on their notoriety
How Irsay didn’t wind up becoming Dan Snyder before Dan Snyder is
pretty surprising.

The fault is on Jim "i will have a double" Irsay
I’d probably go with Taylor’s side, I mean it’s irsay, he cut Peyton Manning
JT coming off an injury, failed his physical, in a new system, terrible RB market, asking way too much, unprofessional agent. But yes this is Irsay’s fault because he says wacky things sometimes!
@@blakeandotherstuffas agent you ask for the moon …in reality if they gave JT some incentives for this year he’d prob just play …if he gets franchised that’s over double his earnings from his rookie contract - no team would give him a figure higher than the tag over multiple years with any considerable chunk guaranteed so,hopefully his agent is aware enough to do right by JT.

Pay all players the same amount and offer incentives based on performance. This way no one will complain about not making as much money as other players. The rise of drama centered around the players and their "lack" of money is troubling and might be the downfall of the NFL in the future if fans grow weary of these situations.
Ever heard of league minimum? Better players do infact get paid more, you're point is useless
@@Hawksonsucks69 No, the point is solid. Look at USFL and XFL to see how all the players get paid the same other than incentives based on performance. In the NFL Patrick Mahomes salary is almost $40 million or 18% of the Chiefs salary cap. Over half of the rest of the team gets paid under $1 million. So, tell me how your league minimum in any way works like what I'm proposing from the USFL and XFL?
Throwing in the Dr Evil was fantastic, keeping it classic to your past.
I wish teams were allotted $8 million that wouldn't be counted against the cap space and that could only be used on running backs. Running back is a position with tons of wear that leads to short careers and they really need to find a way to compensate them properly instead of continuing to use them like disposable players.

Only thing is it is a very hard, demanding, and dangerous job that not many people are capable of even doing…just like being an nfl running back. Great move by Taylor because he's in his rookie deal so it's best to negotiate now so they can't use the oh you have to many miles..
He's gonna end up like Leveon Bell. Running Backs are replaceable in today's NFL.
@@JoeMomma..are they or are you just repeating what people are saying.
He's only on year four and look at what Henry and Chubb have done and are doing.
@@JoeMomma.. if that's the case then trade him well at least he can save his body from wear and Bell was later in his career Taylor a younger RB so he has more Value then Bell
@@Landofhim They are replaceable too. Titans ain't winning no super bowl paying a Running Back that much. Henry is not a Recieving threat either
@@38kal Nobody trading for Taylor. He had a novice year last year. He should be happy to be in the NFL. Running backs aren't valuable like that unless your a Recieving threat too. Nobody worried about Johnathan Taylor running routes like a Christian McCaffrey.
Yet for some reason people act like it only happens with running backs. I mean, Tom Brady, the guy who most people think is the GOAT QB, replaced a 1st overall pick who had a massive 10 year deal.
@@matthewskinner6626 Okay now name other examples aside from Brady where a star QB in his prime was replaced and the team benefitted.
RBs falling off a cliff after getting paid isn't new, it's been happening forever it's just now people are finally noticing it.
@@unc54 Kirk Cousins replacing RG3, Colin Kaepernick replacing Alex Smith, Nick Foles replacing Carson Wentz, Brock Purdy replacing Trey Lance/Jimmy G. Aaron Rodgers replacing Favre I think kinda counts. And that's just off the top of my head. And your second statement, that this has always happened to running backs and running backs alone? No offense, but I'm pretty certain that's not true.
I'm open to being proved wrong on this, but I don't think I am. Mostly because it's people repeating narratives without questioning them.
The problem is that running backs are being paid what they are worth, if they were worth more than teams would pay more the NFL is literally a market
I don’t think it’s they don’t want to pay him or that they can’t I thinks it more cause they want to try to cap the running back market don’t you think they also are aware of the situation Taylor’s is trying to do sure they can pay him as they can afford it
If you know the name of the team's owner, that is probably a sign they are a problem for their team.
Not really. I mean, people do know Clark Hunt, Robert Kraft, Shahid Khan, Stan Kroenke, Jerry jones, and most of them are not a problem for their team (I put most because Jerry Jones is debatable on that with the Cowboys fans)
JT needs to hire Brandon as his agent
RB's deserve the money, they get a beating and don't get the money they deserve
10 million is more money than any athlete actually deserves.
They get every penny they deserve it’s literally a market, if they deserved more then teams would pay it to get the competitive advantage, but paying running backs puts you at a disadvantage so no one wants to do it
To add, depth chart you listed is wrong, Funk isn’t going to play, it would be Hull instead

The irsay’s have always been insane
I'm in favor of incentive based contracts in situations like this coming off injury and unable pass a physical. ... He has no leverage . If he comes back and say has a 10 mill bonus for 1500 yds that would boost his base salary up and both sides win and set him up for a long term contract . Then he would have leverage
The colts haven't said once he has a back injury, you are using a local Indianapolis beat reported who clearly blew this one. They also never said they aren't paying him. The media has said both.
Where do you think the media is getting all of this from...
Then Jim can kick himself in his on @$$
Lots of coming and going on the Colts
the problem is the 2 top RBs help in the passing game ALOT.
Nothing like an ad break during an ad
"If he can" the key phrase on Taylor. He literally had a down year last year and is asking for 16 mil? Come out and ball out then ask.
Franchise tag shouldn’t be for running backs, honestly probably should only be able to tag your QB
you forgot 'Schnuts' and 'nards'
The story here is JT is on the final year of his rookie deal at a bad time.
The Colts want to hold off on a big contract while they figure out what they have and where Taylor fits in their offense.
If they suck, why hand out a new expensive contract to an RB while they'll be rebuilding?
If the offense is anything like the Eagles, why pay a lead back when RB by committee can work?
Before hiring Steichen, Ballard alluded to a new deal for JT.
After hiring him & drafting AR, Ballard has said they want to see where they are before any new deals.
The franchise tag just needs to go.
It only benefits owners, not players.
Jim Irsay and Dan Snyder are proof that being rich has nothing to do with "hard work" and everything to do with getting lucky and taking advantage of people.

Nah paying a running back above market value is the dumb move here, the goal is to win superbowls not be a charity for millionaires
RBs don't realize that they just aren't as important to offenses anymore. The NFL has ruined the game with offensive rules changes, not to mention bullshit safety rules
Sign them to 20 million dollars a year but then cut your offensive line budget.
See how he does then.

Colts aren't going to sign anyone because no RB will be willing.
