  • When a Soldier changes units/PCS or gets out of the Army their might be some different possible awards they could get from their unit. Here are some example of different awards I've gotten or seen soldiers get in the Army.

My only unit sent me off with a nice crystal glass plaque. I still have it to this day.
At a minimum, I’ve always seen and heard that a unit will at least announce to the company that a certain solider was leaving and so wish him/her well and depending on how much they liked them, would warrant a nice gift. Heck, when my 1SGT PCSed to a new station, he got a painting of himself and his wife who passed away recently.

When I told my retention NCO I was getting out in 6 months. My unit was told not to give me rides to work. My 2 1/2 ton with my name was taken away from me. It sucked. To top it off. I was walking to work and a Full bird Col give me a ride. He asked about me and my future plans. I told him I was getting out of the Army. He got pissed off and called me a dirtbag. Dropped me off and I went to salute him. He told me to drop and give him push-ups…

I got a cool lighter when I left my company. I had been the CO for 4 years, and they gave me a cool ring with the infantry crossed sabers on it and the lighter. It had regular flame and propane, and it had an American flag decal on it with the words, "This We'll Defend" on it, and under it, it said, "Thank You for your service Captain. From Charlie Company, 2/23" and a challenge coin. I still use the lighter, the plaque is on the wall, and the challenge coin is in a bag in my office.

It's usually soldiers chiping In for it or higher ranking paying for it out of their pocket. Don't think they can really use Army funds for something like a trophy.

Fort Riley was more "professional" in ignoring its people even in 1984--and what else is there to do in Korea but make stuff to take care of your Army brothers and sisters? Most units are between the two extremes. Usually, Berlin during the Cold War gave out a barb wire certificate.
I enlisted in the Marine Corps (delayed enlistment) in November 1974 and retired from the Nevada Army National Guard in January 2010--with some service breaks. I didn't see it all, but I'm not totally inexperienced.

    • @sonnyblack3877

Say what you want about hazard pay. The Korean conflict a arm-assist has been signed not a peace treaty. Technically it is a war zone, it’s been one since 1953.
