- Ryan Dungey opens up about losing the 2008 West Supercross Championship to rival Jason 'J-Law' Lawrence and how it effected him mentally post losing that title.
//
We are back for another episode of the podcast and this one is special. I am joined today by none other than Ryan Dungey. He is a future hall of famer and a multiple time Motocross and Supercross champion. On top of this he is a Husband, father and he runs a foundation that supports children with cancer and introduces bicycles into the lives of underprivileged children.
Ryan was also the first person I ever recorded a podcast with all the way back in 2017. At that time the concept of Gypsy Tales wasn’t even born yet, but that chat ignited what has become a great joy and passion in my life and it was really cool to get to sit down again years later.
On this awesome episode of the podcast we talked about how far he has come since 2017, what he has learned since retiring from the sport, his comeback season in 2022, reflecting on his rivalry with Jason Lawrence, his experience trying out for Factory Suzuki, living with Ricky Carmichael, his friendship with James Stewart, his partnership with brands like Target and Nike and much more.
Ryan is a brilliant guy and this was a joy to do.

Please get jlaw on the podcast. He has so many crazy stories to tell.
Yeah.... how do I blew all my money and my career
@@akatgif yea but those guys are the last of a dying breed in motocross. Him and josh hill got some crazy stories. But it is sad the way his career ended, he could have been great. But some people don’t want it and jlaw just wanted to have fun and ride his bike. He still rides to this day and is having fun. Most guys like dungey or villo get burnt out by then.
He will make some excuse saying they wouldn't work with him on the time to come or something it's always someone else fault with jlaw unfortunately
Agreed jlaw is legit af
@@ej2civicb736nah bro take a step into the racing world. He knows what he’s doing.
Dungey!! Forsure the nicest Badass you will ever meet! For sure one of the most down to earth guys to sling a leg over a factory bike. Dude is just awesome.
Such a real dude. He makes no excuses and owns everything.
Pressure can of course be the thing that gets the warrior going, but one or two thoughts in the wrong direction it can be translated to anxiety. The beauty of these raw and personal interviews, I can for the first time sense how the pressure for all these guys feel. Or at least get a glimpse of it. Thank you.
Imagine racing all those years, then keeping your thoughts private, then one day you can open up and let it all out.
Ryan rode with the same quiet racecraft. Don’t let em know what you’re thinking or if you’re spent.
What a top notch lad....
Dungey - 8 Mill with 9 championships.
Lawrence - Lives out of a mobile home and has 1 championship.
Pretty clear who the winner is here.
Jlaw didnt want any of that your measure of success is off
Bbhhhhtttddhhrr....and hhhooeehhjjjjfftrand.
Jesus Christ 😅😅😅 mate.
Freaking put a full sentence together that makes any sense.
God damn 😅😅😅
@@raysgay329 lol, what did the loser want then bud?
@@Masi22isaMtake your own advice.
@@bizzle4819 the dude could make a million dollars in the next 6 months with just interviews and social media. Jlaw quit racing dude was over it 😂
Dungey was such a smooth champ, you always knew in his prime he would be on a podium
You don't know this Jase but when you spoke about perception of how upset we think we should be, it really heavily applies to life and relationships and hits home hard. It actually helps. These podcasts are more than just moto.
One of the best guys in the industry, for sure.
Yoooo love what your doing Gypsy keeping it real love dunge to golden rod for life
Now this is a conversation ive been wanting to hear for ages!!
Dungey is such a friggin legend!!
This week, after work JLaw is smoking a cigarette and watching these videos.
Ryan actually gets the last laugh.
Pretty sure it’s not a cigarette he’s smoking lol
JLaw has been on Whiskey throttle media doing pre and post race breakdown videos bud, he's also racing again, doing regionals rn and planning on going to Lorettas this year. Life isn't about doing things that other people view as successful, it's about doing what you want and staying true to yourself and that is what JLaw has done all his life
You should have some of the old fmx dudes there. Faisst, Mason, Adams. That would be cool to see some of the other side of the mx sport
Honest and open . 👍
Gypsy. You are becoming the main man. Well done, Sir!
Would be great if Ryan showed up at Loretta's and raced Jason again 🏁🇺🇸😎
Yeah and look at were they ended up.
Jason Lawrence didn't go anywhere.
Rd5 is a legend of the sport!
Congrats on quitting social media, respect.
From the guy who would break to the guy who would never break.
I thought it was really awesome when Barcia came out and said he didn't really wanna be the type of person he was anymore. And has seemed to mean it. Jason Lawrence I suspect will not have that change, and he's the only rider I just straight can't stand as a person. Never worth it to try to fight through life the way he does. It's so lame man. It sucks cause he is really good and I want to like him lol. Always wonder how good he could be without wasting energy on being the bad guy.
Idk maybe watch Whiskey Throttle Sight Lap/ Riders Meeting with him lol
Drugs are mind altering substances for some kids. Many, top 10 Supercross/Motocross racers got into drugs, and it ruined their careers.
JLAW ON PODCAST PLEASE 🙏
Can someone please explain the beginning of every gypsy tales podcast.. what is the thing he plays at the start saying?? "I'm eta-jefic" that's all I ever hear 😅
I met a Gypsy

Think about the pressure JS7 was under in 2009 after a DNF first race & still barely winning also dungy ET3
I hope Dunge makes peace with his mind.
👏🏼
You know when it really became clear was after Jlaw got out of jail dungey I had already been winning on 450s and Dungey got into with Jlaw in practice at one of the supercross races back lol Regardless of the success Dungey still had that beef with Jlaw
As much as Ryan hated to have to go through that and deal with it. It had to happen to make him who he is and what he did. Really for both j law to even tho j law kinda got bad end of the stick in the end lol but same time they both got to live their dreams racing and get to look back on it and laugh lol
JLaw got into everyone’s head. He was a shit talker and wouldn’t be afraid to chop your front wheel on the start or every turn! We were at Hangtown in probably 08-09 and JLaw was racing and we’d cheer and yell for him in one of the turns every time he came by in practice. He stopped one lap to talk to us and he gave us his goggles. He was so fast out there. I liked JLaw, this sport needed a villain and he stepped right into that roll. He wasn’t afraid to go into someone’s pit and throw hands with someone. The JLaw- Villopoto fight at Hangtown was one for the books, if you watch the video you can see my brother at the fence cheering em on. Dungey was always the nice guy.
In the end Jason Lawrence behavior didn't serve him.
Ryan has a healthy retirement account, and JLaw life situation is mediocre.
Like the old adage says: "You reap what you sow."
Jlaw is an overrated clown!
Not overrated
He had talent but lacked work ethic and discipline.
@@markpelzer725does it matter if you had the talent to put one title together... if you blow up your career because you're an idiot.... you're not considered a great champion.
@DaytonaPrototypes drugs mostly ruined JLaws long-term success. Drugs = jails and prison
Jlaw fan boys are so delusional in these comments lol

Who cares. No one even remembers what a *jlaw is.

I mean we got to see how their careers played out. I’d say Jlaw was more mentally beat than dungey even if he beat him dungey beat him the next year. Doesn’t matter that Jlaw didn’t finish the season he signed up for all 9 rounds and lost every single one he entered
