He was deceiving with speed, he often looked so smooth that it didn’t look like he was going as fast as he was. He was also extremely fit also and won many races in the last 5-10 minutes when others would fade
Dungey was smart. People thought he didn't have enough speed, but he was just smart enough to not go for risky passes. Finishing the race on the podium rather than pushing for the win and messing up adds up in a long season of racing.
I think it's great how Dungey's legacy has aged. I don't think he got the recognition he deserved back then. But man, to be so consistently fast, have no injuries, win those titles and come back to kick ass on motocross season after years of retirement.... If that's not a legend, I don't know what is....
Always been a huge Dungey fan. Growing up in Washington all my friends were big RV fans but I was the odd one out who rooted for Dunge. He's the working man's hero in my opinion. He got there on grit and determination while always staying humble. The greatest ambassador the sport has ever had.

A little less talk and a lot more action.
crazy its allready 10 years ago that Alessi jumped the gate at A1...Villopoto crashing out of the lead..James Stewart loosing it in the whoops battling with Roczen for the win. I didnt realise that Reed, Stewart and Villopoto were allready on their way out back then, but at least I watched that season live. Amazing rider Dungey..takes a lot of guts to say the things he does in this video even though it was clear Villopoto had his number 9 out of 10 races. th-cam.com/video/TrYbC5Vm7ys/w-d-xo.html battle at Dungey home crowd battling side by side allmost the hole lap with Villopoto was one of the best thing Ive seen in supercross
First and foremost, let me make a point that I have a lot of respect for Dungey, and he really impressed me and I am a huge fan. But..... it has always shocked me at the attention he got and always seemed everyone forgot he was second to Villopoto. He always had an edge on him and always seemed to be a little better. 4 Supercross championships in a row. Holding Dungey down in motocross and first one to win monster million. Every time I bring this up, people disagree, especially those gay for Dungey. But here, Dungey himself reminds us of how amazing Villo was and is.
What you’re saying is true, but it’s also not like Dungey was overrated. Dungey had 3 sx titles in a row, 4 total, same as RV. Yes, you could argue had RV kept racing that Dungey would’ve won less, but it’s not like they are miles apart. You could also argue that RV wouldn’t have been able to sustain his pace and would have crashed and been hurt more. In the end RV was faster but Dungey was better enough times to have a heck of a career. I think the ultimate reason RV flew under the radar a bit was his public persona wasn’t good like Dungeys was.
I think Dungey's great strength was his consistency and avoiding injury. RV may have had the edge on top speed during his title years--kinda like Stewart--but Dungey was still consistently fast.
Dungey is/was the best person to represent our sport to the mainstream. Stewart made it more popular, Ricky is the GOAT, Jeremy ushered it all in. But if you had to pick only ONE to represent the sport it’s Dungey hands down
I remember me and a bunch of my friends watching mx and I saw Ryan Dungey racing lights and saw him as winner long before he was winning races all the time I bet on him in a race one day and all my friends at that time where laughing at me but he won the race I can not remember the race. but my friends started calling me the champ picker thats really funny now that he's won 4 sx and more and is retired from the sport but alway cheered for him to win first on suzuki then for Ktm
A lot of respect to him for acknowledging Villo was that bit better than him everyone these days always likes to say they are the best and beat their chest
I remember this time well, interesting to hear RD talk about this, better rider is subjective, RV2 was faster and mentally stronger in 2011 and more willing to hang it out at all costs, that was not the RD5 style, to me RD5 was the David Bailey of this era, technical and calculated a smart rider, Villopoto was the Ricky Johnson of this era! different styles! That said RD5 also had a major change behind the scenes that would affect anyone and there's 2 things I want to mention that's rarely talked about and even he didn't raise it, which is credit to the man because he would rather take the cheap shots of others and even RV2 than use them as excuses! I just want to say I have become an RV2 fan since he retired. End of 2010 Suzuki was going through major change globally, they dropped one of the greatest riders of all time as a team manager in Europe Stefan Everts, they didn't resign Roger De Coster after all he did for them, Suzuki have been notorious for this throughout there motorsports history, not just moto! Dungey losing De Coster and basically having to walk alone, sure there were others but losing a mentor a manager like De Coster which he was close too, is monumental and to be able to compete with RV at all imo was one of his greatest achievements in 2011, because its when you at your worst/worst things around you are happening, that you truly see the type of man or person you are and as hard as that year was imo he was a true champion he fought his way through it. Most would have crumbled, company politics losing your mentor of such a legendary standard. Villo (RV2) had been with the same team his whole career as RV says Aldon got on board and his team got stronger and his stars aligned. He still had to get the job done so not taking that away from RV, but this was clear at the time. Also I want to raise another point overlooked in Ryna Dungeys career and it might be his most important contribution and imo an another amazing achievement, something few have given back or done during their careers and something RV2 could not have done! Something Ryan Dungey if he's not! should be very proud of. In 2012 Roger D had already signed to KTM, he brought RD5 to KTM, what a gamble to give up a team (RD5 ) you have been on and won multiple championships with and go to a team and a brand that at premier level had no history of success in the US, in SX and US Nationals! Never won a race or a title as a brand at premier level! Think on that for a minute! So 2 things here, 1: It shows how big an influence Roger De Coster was to Ryan Dungey! And how close they were. Plus how much of a loss this was in the 2011 season for Dungey, not having Roger on the team was, that was massive. 2: Belief that both Rodger De Coster could and why wouldn't he, he literally brought Honda to the highest levels, in the early 80s and setup one of the most dominant eras for a brand! He dragged team USA kicking and screaming to MXDNs glory with a B team and the longest winning streak ever! He brought Suzuki back from the dead in the 2000s, then KTM were all in for the long haul and still are. So this is what most overlooked, when comparing rider vs rider! While RV2 went on to win a number of titles during this time, he didn't win everything, RD5 and KTM and Roger De Coster developed a package a bike that at the time wasn't even winning in Europe, Antonio Cairloi was winning everything on a 350cc bike and doing it easily in GPs premier class! They not only developed a bike for and to be competitive in the US market but they won races and titles while RV was still there, in both class's! Then dominated after RV retired, RV he retired because he couldn't keep riding on the edge, he has said that many times, who pushed him to that edge, he shows it now, he proved it when he tried to go to GPs for a season and couldn't develop for what ever reasons the same brand in a different environment! Not hating on RV, I'm pointing out what's overlooked, how important key people and teams are, not just the rider, not just the numbers! I can take many riders through history that couldn't develop a bike and win or couldn't ride a bike and win unless it was perfectly setup by someone else for them how they needed it. And more importantly I think we can see that now, since Ryan Dungey left KTM the bike hasn't had the same success due to that lack of ability to setup a bike develop a bike back to the team the engineers, or atleast to the level that RD5 could and proved, this is proven! Then look how long its taken Sexton and how much we have heard about the platform. These guys started from scratch and were competitive, broke molds no one thought could be broken in 2012 and onwards. aside note, we never used to hear so much about bike setup back then as an excuse or topic, its good on one side to get shared info from the media, but like all media its done to death as a topic. Ryan, you may have forgotten this aspect or are too humble to admit, but to me some of the greats David Bailey, Johnson, McGrath, Stewart and Villo and many today didn't couldn't and haven't done this and you did it from essentially scratch with KTM, Rodger and your team, to where it was a great platform that became a go to for anyone on the start line, not just pros, Orange filled staring grids like Yellow used to in the 70s and early 80s when Yamaha and Suzuki were both running yellow in the US! Still to this day, the KTM group bikes will have atleast 3 of the top 10 from each class in the results standing. again overlooked. RC could develop a bike for himself, but I don't even he developed a bike to this level, some may argue Triumph, but you raced and did this at the same time, yes with others its always a team. You didn't/couldn't wait 4 years to bring a bike out and compete! But I think this is much over looked by people in the industry which shows a real lack of understanding and credit that this has never been truly covered or understood. Many talk about how RV2 owned you, to me I think you owned him, you outlasted him, RV was on the same team his whole career, the only risk he took was on the track and you kept winning and your brought a bike a brand along for the ride to the very top not just in the US but globally that wasn't just a GP bike, it was SX, Moto! It was for racer to weekend warrior! I say this as a Yamaha guy, had more Yamaha's than all other brands put together over the last 40 years, had a couple of KTMs off road 2strokes. Loved them, why I am a big fan of KTMs because they saved 2strokes, I don't believe Id be on a 22 YZ 2t today if not for KTM frankly, so I have huge respect for that alone. They are not perfect, allot has changed but still its one heck of a ride. Cheers for the career you had its one of the best imo, one of the few that numbers alone don't tell the whole story and your would make a much more colorful movie if it was told in theaters than most. To me that's one hell of a championship legacy that few if any can match imo 🏆
Also don't forget with al the hate the new platform got when it came out in 2022 Ryan Dungey 6 seasons retired from MX outdoors and got 6th overall on a bad bike apparently!
RV was great and had more speed that Dungey but in 2011 Dungey wins both SX and MX if it's not for a broken chain and running out of gas. Not to mention the debacle at southwick when he was finally given his bike just before the field was about to finish the first lap and he still got 7th. If we wins both of those championships it's hard to say where the mental game would have been between those two.
gotta be really tough and you can see it in Dungey, to work so hard and you just cant get this dude......same with Reed and RC or wyndam and RC......some dudes just have that extra lil thing....still though a class act
I don’t know how to feel about RD5. I remember being a little kid 2 years in a row at HighPoint MX and he refused to give me a photo and autograph both times. @@seanhaberman4619 It’s just hard to believe 2 times in a row.. The fact as an adult i’ve had a hour long conversation with tomac and kranz in 2019 at Highpoint. It just boggles my mind because i’ve never had an interaction with anyone other than RD5 that went that way. The guys like to talk to the fans. We all humans so it just blows my mind honestly. Even have a pic of me and RV2 back in 2011 and he was known as one of the guys who don’t interact much. Met KROC back when he was on KTM #70. I have it on my wall just don’t know the year. I believe it was 2010 also. Met Brian and Haiden at Loretta’s 2020 and even they were so interactive even though they had 200 people surrounding their tent after Haidens 1st moto. It’s crappy because I am a fan so it’s just super disappointing.
I feel like Rd5 has a country music career in the near future. But it's not sad break up songs it's not winning the moto kinda song. I'd buy that shit ...what was that kids name Bmazy?

Youre the only fan I've ever heard of him not paying attention to. There are thousands of stories of him going out of the way to pay attention to fans. Maybe you just got to him at a bad time.
I remember that time when he lost fuel mid race and rdc had to top it off.
Takes a high caliber man comfortable in his own skin to admit that someone was just better than you
Hey Jase you're on the right track don't even succumb to the naysayers
He still took out JS7 in 2016 👎
Bro was consistent tho
Yea but Dungy had the most high paid sponsors
Everyone finger raced against was better than him. Dude settled for 2nd place his whole career. Waited for an injury or a setback crash. Then capitalized. Most boring person to watch win a championship
Hey homie do you remember the appeal idea, here what is possible #Taylornation
So was james stewart, but you took him out. James is still relevant today and people love him, you...not so much.
Who has more championships?
@@blakecornwell8319 JS7 will be remembered, dungey not as much
Dungey was a nobody who did very well for himself. Look at Alessi..the next big thing who never won a title.
Those KTM's he rode were shit compared to what RV was riding
