The first boss was supposed to be the leader of an evil game room. Starman Jr. isn't a boss by theoretical means. Starman Jr. just attacks Buzz Buzz, and not Ness, as what he says. But if you don't care, I can accept that Starman Jr. is the first boss, the Runaway Dog is the first enemy, Then Giygas is the last boss, and the Final Starman is the last enemy. And the actual first enemy is... a lamp. And the actual last enemy is... your brother.
Earthbound was a game made like something from the imagination of a child. In a way, Giygus makes sence in this theme. It looks like the result of a child seeing something he wasn’t supposed to see and letting his imagination go crazy.

The scene he saw was two people making love, but he somehow thought that it was a rape scene. This traumatized him and the fear he felt inspired Giygas. There’s also the fetus thing, but Itoi said that was just a coincidence.
The fucking choice of words is what scares me the most. "Giygas cannot think rationally any more, and he isn't even aware of what he is doing now. His own mind was destroyed by his own incredible power." "And you...You will be...Just another *meal* to him!" Like holy shit, chill. Or PK Freeze, I guess.
That is just a carbon copy of Sultan Azathoth from the H.P Lovecraft mythos. God in the centre of all things chaos it self. It’s not baby shaped, that’s not how he really looks. It’s just there for us to interpret. We cannot comprehend Giygas but we can understand that he must be terrifying because of the great fear, unstoppable crying, etc. The limited Ui tells us the fear that the characters are going through. Also, when giygas is at his third stage, flip the image. It’s giegue.

Believe it or not, I think it would lose all its scariness factor. The scariest part of the fight is, well, _you cannot grasp_ _the_ _true form of Giygas' attack._ You can only imagine what horrors the characters are living through because of the limited UI.

The Final Prayer was always something I've admired. The final prayer was from you. the breaking of the 4th wall to aid them. To see them succeeed. God this game was an adventure.
I know it's probably not intentional, but I like how the screen goes black. Just like how it does with all the other characters, the game is showing you who's praying.

I am no longer scared of this boss because of what happened when me and my friends played. We have Paula the Franklin badge since we needed her to stop dying so quickly from PSI Thunder, and we had given her the sea pendant which makes her almost completely immune to freeze and fire as well as completely immune to PSI Flash. Once we got to the second faze only Ness and Paula where left and we barely got to the third faze. Ness goes down and Paula has no life noodles or horns of life items making her the only one left. We start noticing that Giygas is barely doing any damage and that's when I realize that there is literally no way Giygas can kill her and even if he got close she had a hand-aid which would heal her completely. We all start laughing as I inform my buds about the situation, and we start praying and eventually win. Once the ending scenes start we all point out that the inter-dimensional space demon from space hell was defeated by a Ten something year old girl who prays a lot... best fucking ending ever in my opinion.

I 100% agree. As a fan of other-wordly creatures in fiction and cosmic horror, it was amazing seeing that phrase the first time I met the final boss of this game.
This ending is so damn good because Giygas is defeated, but is still undefeatable. The player's intervention is like a deus ex machina, the game breaks its own rules, its own canon to be able to offer a good ending. That was, actually, the best way to make a boss defeatable when the character isn't.
+Tabbender Still the good thing is Ness and his friends get back to their homes but what's disappointing is Porky has escaped into an absolutely safe capsule where he could see every era from 199X to the future. So he gets to see Lucas' time and after until the end of his life or world because he now won't be able to die of age. Also another good thing is that he betrayed Giygas and he was the one supporting Giygas through power and evil.
Chris Bryan Giygas is just next-level horror. Omega Flowey was scary yes, but Giygas has it all. He’s just a blob, an abomination who couldn’t handle the power he had. Flowey knew exactly what he was doing, although he also became an abomination. But for some reason, Omega Flowey is just less scary than Giygas.

gyigas was based on what happened on myamoto's brain. When he was a kid he saw something he wasn't supposed to see (2 people making love) and tought it was a rape scene, so he got traumatized and his imagination went crazy, this is how gyigas was made, according to a commenter

I was so terrified playing through the fight Almost everyone died early while Paula was my only remaining party member. I was praying so hard and was lucky to heal with my inventory full. By the end, I actually had to take a break before finishing because never have I encountered such an intense battle before.

I got a crazy idea... What if.... Giygas was an assist trophy in Smash? He would become the background and would move across the screen while the opponent took damage. After a little bit then Giygas would disappear. Just a random idea I got.
the part where everyone prays for ness' safety is interesting, this is like the "power of friendship" ending but it's so different because no one actually gets stronger because of that, all they can do is pray, it's like giygas is a demon or something
Giygas IS a demon: he became so immensely powerful that it destroyed his body and mind causing him to lose his sanity as well as his physical form. That's why the entire battle depicts Giygas as a background because his form has become incomprehensible as a result of losing his own body. His death further demonstrates this as it turns into static as a result of his insanity coming to an end.

In the game PSI is pretty much a form of magic, it's like Giygas's form dinsintergrates as he dissolves into a dark force you can't fully see or understand. It's otherwordly and unstable. Not the same as say, a human who trains with discipline to control their mind and behaviour as they get physically stronger. Giygas is inhuman, unnatural, and grows into the pure enbodiment of evil.

Beautiful, terrifying, absolutely heartrending. I was so scared by this battle, I could barely look at what was left of Giygas, and yet against all judgement here I am watching this. I want to pity Giygas for being destroyed in his own grief and rage, but it's so horrifying.

My favorite part of this game: Paula: [After saving the planet with you,] Ness, will you escort me home? God, I read that line and walking to her house is all the sweeter. Quite literally, I tear up at the sound of the song playing (Because I Love You), since I used to listen to it when I was stressed beyond the help of regular therapies. I just listened to this song and thought about a girl I knew. Beautiful game, beautiful ending. That's how I want my (life) story to end. Thank you, Shigesato Itoi, for making my favorite game ever.
I like the fact that many prayers were integral to the defeat of Giygas. Profound. True evil can only be defeated by true good. There's a good, ultimate, higher power above any evil, I'm glad they acknowledged that.

He was confused and had convinced himself that it was a rape scene which explains the design and other stuff of this character such as the whole uterus thing before approaching giygas or giygas himself being designed almost to resemble a fetus.

I had a dream last night with some real nightmare fuel. I call it "The Giygas Pill". It's about this rare, red, sphere-shaped pill that grows on a bush. If you eat it, you will be taken to an unknown area of darkness with Giygas-related things flashing in front of you. You can stay as long as you want, but when you decided to return to the real world, you will be weakened. You move much slower, you find things more stressful, and your vision will be tinted red. There is no-known cure to this "Giygas Curse", except another rare, rectangle shaped white pill that grows on a bush. If you take it, all the effects go away. I think this would make a good SCP...

That is so cool that the creator of this game went with a Lovecraftian style monster, and did it so amazingly well. Terrifying.
It's like he's so freaking powerful the mortal mind can't begin to describe it. Giygas' attacks are BEYOND MORTAL COMPREHENSION.
Itoi is a genius writer.
I 100% agree. As a fan of other-wordly creatures in fiction and cosmic horror, it was amazing seeing that phrase the first time I met the final boss of this game.
This ending is so damn good because Giygas is defeated, but is still undefeatable. The player's intervention is like a deus ex machina, the game breaks its own rules, its own canon to be able to offer a good ending. That was, actually, the best way to make a boss defeatable when the character isn't.
+Tabbender Still the good thing is Ness and his friends get back to their homes but what's disappointing is Porky has escaped into an absolutely safe capsule where he could see every era from 199X to the future. So he gets to see Lucas' time and after until the end of his life or world because he now won't be able to die of age. Also another good thing is that he betrayed Giygas and he was the one supporting Giygas through power and evil.

Chris Bryan Giygas is just next-level horror. Omega Flowey was scary yes, but Giygas has it all. He’s just a blob, an abomination who couldn’t handle the power he had. Flowey knew exactly what he was doing, although he also became an abomination. But for some reason, Omega Flowey is just less scary than Giygas.
This game is on the same level of disturbing as 90s kid shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog...

I was so terrified playing through the fight
Almost everyone died early while Paula was my only remaining party member. I was praying so hard and was lucky to heal with my inventory full. By the end, I actually had to take a break before finishing because never have I encountered such an intense battle before.
Paula died and rock but not poo meaning i will never find love and my closest friend will die in front of me, yup, A kids game with no remorse.

@Psychedelic Moon I know how different it feels when playing it, you need to act fast because the game spares you any trouble related to instant death by normal damage - you gradually lose health, so if you act quickly enough you don't have to waste and PP on Healing Omega!

Giygas IS a demon: he became so immensely powerful that it destroyed his body and mind causing him to lose his sanity as well as his physical form. That's why the entire battle depicts Giygas as a background because his form has become incomprehensible as a result of losing his own body. His death further demonstrates this as it turns into static as a result of his insanity coming to an end.

In the game PSI is pretty much a form of magic, it's like Giygas's form dinsintergrates as he dissolves into a dark force you can't fully see or understand. It's otherwordly and unstable. Not the same as say, a human who trains with discipline to control their mind and behaviour as they get physically stronger. Giygas is inhuman, unnatural, and grows into the pure enbodiment of evil.

God, I read that line and walking to her house is all the sweeter. Quite literally, I tear up at the sound of the song playing (Because I Love You), since I used to listen to it when I was stressed beyond the help of regular therapies. I just listened to this song and thought about a girl I knew.
Beautiful game, beautiful ending. That's how I want my (life) story to end.

I like the fact that many prayers were integral to the defeat of Giygas. Profound. True evil can only be defeated by true good. There's a good, ultimate, higher power above any evil, I'm glad they acknowledged that.

@@saturniidspectre the inspiration behind this "Giygas" character was based on a traumatic experience the creator of this game had as a child involving him walking into the wrong movie theater and watching a scene of a movie where a woman was being murdered. He was confused and had convinced himself that it was a rape scene which explains the design and other stuff of this character such as the whole uterus thing before approaching giygas or giygas himself being designed almost to resemble a fetus.

I had a dream last night with some real nightmare fuel. I call it "The Giygas Pill".
It's about this rare, red, sphere-shaped pill that grows on a bush. If you eat it, you will be taken to an unknown area of darkness with Giygas-related things flashing in front of you. You can stay as long as you want, but when you decided to return to the real world, you will be weakened. You move much slower, you find things more stressful, and your vision will be tinted red. There is no-known cure to this "Giygas Curse", except another rare, rectangle shaped white pill that grows on a bush. If you take it, all the effects go away.
