A fall on the ice you would normally get straight up from with no injurys can lead to ripped up skin incredibly easily. I took figure skating lessons when I was little, like between the ages of 7-9. Was able to do a few simple turns and jumps and stuff but never continued past that, but I've always been comfortable on ice skates. And when I was little, translating ice skating to rollerblading was easy and I was able to do a lot of the same (simple) stuff on rollerblades. Now about 20 years later, even though I only skate like once or twice a year recreationally, it's like riding a bike. Super natural, super comfortable.

    @KxNOxUTA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +127

    I have something like these, too and it's super scary. First of all they're double the weight (I've checked), you're standing higher! Then yes streets and car parks aren't flat so the rain doesn't gather. And the surface is often terrible. BUT I hear from my fellow skater that if you use them as supposed to - in a sport hall - it's supposedly way more similar to being on ice.
    I also didn't exactly see how yours are constructed but Snow Whites are constructed in a way that the middle wheel is lower than the rest, so you have the typical curve and a "sweet spot"
    Coach, please be a good example. Don't go without helmet and guards. It's not the ice. By own experience ice is way way way more safe!!! When you fall you'll slide. On the street you'll very quickly not only have ruined clothing and skin torn off! You're also likely to have nasty stuff in the wound etc.! I usually have to bring a broom to the top no-roof-floor of a parking house to first get rid of the tiny stones (left from winter and brought in by cars). Doing that without them jumping around and hitting any cars. Luckily my place has a section that's usually completely emptied out until night.
    Don't forget sunscreen if you carry on. It's too easy to lose track of time. 🤣
    Another useful advice if you carry on: You need to regularly turn the wheels around. They usually get used up on one side more. Like this they'll wear down evenly and last longer. 😉

      @IceCoachOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hi Kat,
      Great comment! Apologies for the delay in replying, I wanted to make sure I gave it the time it deserves!
      You're right about the weight of these! They are very heavy! Especially when I attached them to my old SP Teri Super Deluxe skates. Overall, they weight over 5kg! My risports with John Wilson Gold Seals attached are around 2kg. So a massive difference there.
      Mine are constructed in a similar way, but with more wheels. I wonder how this affects finding the sweet spot for tuns and spins? I did contact all of the off ice skating companies to see if they wanted to sponsor this video, so I could compare these off ice solutions. Unfortunately, nobody was interested in sponsoring the video, so I ended up buying s pair of the easiest ones I could get my hands on in the UK. I would have bought all of them, but I just don't have the budget for it.
      You are right about the saftey equipment! But we needed to get the video filmed before we were put on lockdown in the house! Bringing the broom with you is a great idea! Like your own mini off ice zamboni 😂
      Thanks for the turning the wheels around advice! We did question the durability of the wheels when we were dragging our foot going down the hill. We figured they might not last too long! Hopefully replacements are cheap enough.
      Thanks again for the fantastic comment!

      @@IceCoachOnline Ah, yeah the lock down! Here in Germany we're half on lock down already, but you can go outside for sports and a walk alone or with ppl of the same household. Ofcourse we are to keep a distance from others while doing so.
      I did wonder about the models, too. Mine are 3 wheel and there were 4 wheel options. I somehow thought they'd probably be lighter with less wheels and it seemed the latest model when I got them. Maybe someone with more experience with different models will appear in the comment section at some point. The budget is really an issue. They're very expensive indeed. And it's a bad time for companies and hence sponsorships, too. However at least in Germany, when I checked, the replacement wheels aren't expensive. You can take any of them as long as you get the right size (there are a few standard sizes), though I suppose there's ofcourse a difference in them. Things like softness (less durable but more grip). Because these are constructed for halls they have white wheels (no streaks) but outside more durable wheels might make more sense. Didn't test that yet.
      There are people to be found on social media training jumps with these. I thought I'd simply go ask them for advice when the time for replacements comes around. 😁
      Hope you stay healthy and sane. I can imagine it's harder for you to stay inside than for me. You guys are used to your daily dose of movement. I'm a real bookworm that somehow ended up enjoying figure skating too much to refrain from it 😂 Big difference!

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@KxNOxUTA that makes a lof of sense about the softness of wheels giving more grip. One of the main things I struggled With was not managing to grip properly when pushing and trying to do deep edges like I would do on the ice. It was a bit like skating on blades that need a good sharpen!
      We are finding ways to stay sane by making videos, hopefully inspiring others in the process.

    From the sound of the wheels on the ground they are probably pretty hard. This allows them to do things like slide stop but makes them risky to push hard into. Softer more compliant wheels would grip better.

    I am not a professional figure skater but I have tried these off-ice skates and also a pair of “Snow white” off ice skates and found that the snow whites are much better in terms of the design as the “toe pick” does not break off easily when utilizing it for jumps. Also the wheels are much bigger and hence reduces the impact of the rough and unsmooth surface of the tarmac. It is worth trying those out if you like figure skating off ice for additional practice.

    I do skate both on ice and ground, and I can tell that every skater can switch one way to another.
    The main difference is the grip.
    the fiction between roller and the ground is the max when the wheels are straight against the ground.
    But when you tilt on roller, the fiction is not enough for you to apply such pressure you would be able to apply on ice.
    And for skiing/ice skating where the edges grip when you tilt.

    I used to rollerskate a lot when I was a kid, and because of that, the first time I went ice skating it took me like 10 minutes to become comfortable on the ice.
    What would probably surprise you more would be that it's an ability that transfers to skiing too, to an extent. My first time skiing I found a lot of similarities, not necessarily in the movements, but in the way I had to hold my body and stuff like that. It made learning SO easy, in three days I felt perfectly confident! And I'm usually a veeery slooow student when it comes to sports, so it was all thanks to my skating experience😂✌🏼

    this is great!! but as an artistic roller skater, the ones you used in the video were inline skates / roller blades. roller SKATES are four wheeled, two in the back and two in front. great video tho!
    edit: the "retro" ones

      @@IceCoachOnline If you’re used to ice skates and and in-line skates, you may not be able to do quad skates. I’ve in-line skated off and on for years (not the fancy stuff, just going straight for exercise, no idea how to do the fancy stuff), and a few years ago I tried to do quads again and I couldn’t do it, even though I had done quads as a little girl (again, nothing fancy, no lessons, just fun stuff outdoors). Once I was used to the balance of that blade or set of wheels in the middle, I couldn’t let go off not trying to maintain that balance which isn’t the same as needed on quads. Ymmv. I love to ice skate (don’t know how to figure skate, just the Everyman kind of ice skating).. but due to my geographical location, don’t get to ice skate much. ..I also enjoy watching figure skating..at one time I was such a die hard fan I knew who all the skaters were, and all the details…I don’t so much anymore, but I still think it’s a beautiful sport especially pairs and dance.

    So do you just unscrew the blades and screw these ones onto the existing boots? I'm scared of messing with the blades/boots set up!

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's that simple! Fortunately, the holes I had to drill into my skates for this were in completely different places to the ones I use for my on ice blades !

    • @KxNOxUTA
      @KxNOxUTA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're exact then it's better to use a pair of old skates. Because no matter the model, the screw holes will usually be different.
      I have Snow Whites. They're built particularly with figure skaters in mind. And my trusted shop recommended to not just do this myself. Because like blades, if they are built to have a sweet spot for spins (a wheel is lower than the rest) then it needs to be in the right place. When I got mine, although it was a hell of an investment for my little budget, I got two pairs of boots and one got blades and the other got the rolls installed.
      I do think it was worth it though I didn't get to practice much yet (terrible weather last year). It did enable me to slowly get used to basics. When you can do it on these, you'll have it very easy on ice cause it's harder 😂.
      However, I highly recommend to first scout sour surroundings. You need the very smooth type of concrete! You see in the Video how they chose the dark new patch in the parking lot. Tiles and the likes won't do! Solid basketball fields and such are other good choices.

      @@KxNOxUTA I would like to try some snow-whites and see what they are like! I would also like to have a skate around a sports hall or nice smooth tennis court. I'm sure it would be a lot more fun!

    You want the least amount of grip when artistic roller skating, but more grip when it comes to ice skating. It's interesting how much things change just by if you're carving into a surface or trying to roll on top of it.

      These roller blades are made differently then traditional roller blades the part of the back of traditional roller blades are on the front of the inline skates that these two are wearing just like they are in ice skates! These are for off ice figure skating! They are not traditional roller blades!

      @IceCoachOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was hoping to see you on quads!! I'm sure they'd be even harder to adapt to than the inline variety lol! Most of us rhythm roller skaters have no stoppers at all... so it's all about various T stops, ski/hockey type stops, slides, etc. Also, we rock back and forth from front to back wheels a ton, though often so subtle that the untrained eye won't notice.
    I actually just got fitted for ice skates TODAY... So this quad skater will be fumbling through your comfort zone very soon!

      @@IceCoachOnline yea def look into some power slide skates or some adapts (they are a little on the pricey side but they use carbon fiber for the boot and that's why.) id say call up your local rollerblading shop, or roller warehouse or loco skates and they will be willing to talk to you about set ups, parts etc. also look to see if there is a group of skaters that go out for a group ride (once this quarantine goes away.) I skate in the San Francisco Friday night skate group, super fun and I've learned a lot from the people! Hope this helps you move in the direction you'd like to skate!
