I know right?? Tbh Rhaenyra’s whole council seems to be so clueless and stupid. You would think Corlys being this famed commander of sea would have some sense but he is just a mute spectator in all this. I think this is ‘Danny kinda forgot about the Iron Fleet’ moment from the writers here.

@@icytangus6683Although I do think they could’ve given Rhaenys a better reason to turn back, they prob only sent one dragon bc they kept saying Rooks Rest was such a small castle, so you prob wouldn’t expect the Greens to use 2 Dragons to take that castle. Too risky, but it worked.
@@rishabhaniket1952seems like You are just hoping for and looking for something like like the iron fleet moment. Everyone was well aware of where the Iron Fleet was and they were not known to be some sort of sneaky, agile weapon that could “surprise” a dragon. They are slow moving boats that they had already scouted.
It would be much more difficult to keep tabs on a dragon regardless of the size, and everything they had known for weeks was that Vhagar was staying at KL to protect the city.
Now - could they have been more careful… absolutely. But Baela had already got tabs on Coles army with no vhagar. They thought they had an advantage and failed to recognize a trap that not even Aegon or Alicent knew about because Cole and Aemond had kept it under wraps.
So sad that we lost one of my favorite dragons (Melys) and Rhaenys 😢

Aemond has a kinslayer arc...started as a boy when he took Vhagar and threatened to kill his cousins (the incident where Luke to his eye). Then he kills Luke, then he ostensibly kills Rhaenys, so thinking about/being close to killing Aegon would seem like the next step in his arc. It certainly appeared that he Dracarys'd Aegon and Sunfyre intentionally.
First off I just wanna say RIP to Meleys the RED QUEEN !!! She's one of the most badass dragons in the dance, and it was glorious to see her in full display. Even we book readers knew what was coming in this battle(in terms of the victor) it was still a surprise to see how the battle played out, an what actually happened between those three dragons in that battle. IMO if your watching this show and you don't consider these past four episodes as peak TV, then you're watching the wrong show !! 💯

Was super excited to tune in for the conversation because what an episode for a talk! I too am devastated and emotionally affected by animals, be they dragons or direwolves, so I relate hard to Mal. I’m looking forward to the House of R Deep Dive because there’s so much to work through in this episode.

That's how you sell it. Plus, the whole idea behind GoT/HotD is that you can tell whatever story you like so long as you win. That's exactly the point that Alicent makes later about Viserys' intentions having died with him.

I thought it was obvious that alicent is looking for the prophecy somewhere in the books now that rhaenyra mentioned it to her and she’s questioning everything?
Made the mistake of putting this episode off until the AM. Currently taking a personal day from work to walk contemplatively around my neighborhood in my pajamas.
I get the whole dragon and dragon-rider connection, Mallory. It surprised me how emotional I was seeing the relationship between Meleys and Rhaenys too. 😢 I feel that with my dogs! Broke my heart to see them fall from the sky. I felt like Rhaenys was more devastated to see her dragon die than to realize she was falling to her own death. 😩

To the people saying they should expect vhagar, not really, they pointed out multiple times that vhagar is staying to watch over king's landing. And the bait from Cole and Aemond was good because you dont think that they would send their largest destruction machine, vhagar, to this small castle that they can take with men alone. Sure you can make a point that they should always think that vhagar can be wherever, but I think they set it up nicely by making it a point that she cant leave King's Landin "in case they come with their dragons to King's landing" . So the Greens forced the Blacks' hands by attacking a strategic location, and they played into their trap

Aemond was the undoubted star of this episode. The war stuff was awesome, but embarrassing Aegon with their difference in Valyrian was hilarious. Allicent was great too.

I definitely think Alys is fucking with his head, but Daemon's visions are clearly influenced/induced by the weirwoods (he's sleeping in a bed made out of weirwood, how much clearer do you want it?).

About the prophecy/Aegon's dream; it is actually canon in the books. GRRM talked about it. Just the part of passing it on to the next heir is a show invention.
I think this is a funny thought when I compare my feelings about Season 7/8 of GOT. My biggest issue back then was all the plot armor and not being willing to kill characters at times that would have meaning (Ice island battle). In HOD my biggest issue is it feels like all the story lines are moving a little too quick and they are killing people fast.

I think Aemond was definitely considering killing Aegon.. I think it was a mix of “let me put him out of his misery” and “I’m the best fighter with the biggest dragon” which he’s already said. Plus his strategy just took out one of the blacks most powerful fighters and damn near his brother AND his dragon. After he heard Criston he came back to reality and sheathed his sword.
But could have easily covered his tracks by using the excuse of it being mercy and I don’t think Alicent would have questioned it much.

These talk the thrones episodes are way too short. And yes I know House of R exists. I just want more!
Agree these are too short and HoR is too long (I only ever manage to listen to half by the time the next week episode's hit), can we not have at least one of them be a normal-length, 80-90min pod??
@@maxibluft you miss me there unfortunately. House of R could be 3+ hrs every week imo and I’d welcome it. The issue I sense here is that it feels like Mal & Jo can’t help but chomp at the bit to speak about stuff more while Chris is in charge of closing his laptop by the hour mark. Absolutely understandable production wise, but when an episode is really good, as this one was, it merits some further discussion. Fools errand to complain about wanting more of something I love, but oh well! As for a 90min-2hr episode re HOTD check out Trial by Content, Joanna’s a host of that one too.

I guess they try to keep this show suited for the casuals rather than the full on deep dive nerds, I'm more the latter but just don't have the time anymore to listen to so much podding :/ (and no 1.5x is not an option lol)

I loved the episode. 1 issue which made the episode less than perfect for me. How many times can Vhagar secretly attack someone? S1 he attacks Luke hidden in the clouds. Now he attacks Rhaenys hidden behind a castle. A) he’s massive, his movements are heard and seen. B) Rhaenys should be a smart enough warrior to fly high enough so she can see all angles.
I’m fine with her losing to Aemond, the whole thing was an unbelievable watch. I just wish it came differently. Instead of a Vhagar hide attack, again.

I actually think Rhaenys killing the smallfolk in episode 9 of season 1 was a great set-up for how the smallfolk will come to think of Targaryens and in terms of what's going to happen towards the end of the Dance of the Dragons and it showcases the thing that ASOIAF constantly tells the readers: these royals for the most part don't see peasants and poor people as anything other than servants and dispensable cannonfodder. They consider fellow nobility as actual human beings whose lives they might consider important enough to spare but they don't care about the lives of the thousands of poor people they ruin with their petty feuds. Rhaenys is no exception.

@@FencingMessiah You're talking like that because you've likely read Fire and Blood. I have also read ASOIAF and Fire and Blood. Most people watching the show haven't. The impact on the smallfolk is something the show has started to get into but didn't fully show until the end of season 1. To assume that everyone sees it like you when you likely have more insight into how the world of ASOIAF works is a bit silly. It's a good set-up for the Shepherd in any case so to me it has a purpose. The scene does not exempt the Blacks and their allies from their share of responsibility in terms of how the smallfolk will come to think of the dragons. And just saying "nah it sucked" because you want characters you like to be framed in a positive light all the time isn't a convincing argument in the first place tbh.

It is BEYOND dumb that somehow the biggest, slowest, lumbering dragon in the story has now killed two of Rhaenyra's dragons with sneak attacks.... Isnt the whole point of Vhagar that she is big and formidable, you dont want to be in a death roll with her but you can outfly her? Instead she's suddenly Arya killing the Night King and sneaking round like she's Ellie avoiding a clicker.

I mean, the book is written and it’s not that long. It’s not hard to find out whether or not Rhaenyra will sit the Iron Throne.
I was all team Rhaenyra until she foolishly sent only one dragon when she has 14. Send 3 to at least have backup, act as distraction while The Princess handled that old overgrown Vagarh anything but that shit ass outcome. This episode was such a disappointment, what the hell is wrong with these unimaginative writers. This episode could have been much more interesting. I want Damon to take over and put Rhanerya aside. Trying to keep peace with a family who usurpered her throne who say "NO PEACE"..... WTF?!?!?
The whole point is that the presence of any team green dragons was a complete surprise. Cole and the men moved mostly through the night after being spotted by Baela, and all the intel was that it was just foot soldiers. One dragon would’ve been enough, but the Greens had a plan. Also, Aegon showing up wasn’t part of the plan. He went on his own volition because he’s trying to show everyone he’s not completely incompetent.
Rhaenyra has no plan and she send meleys one of the largest dragon on her side alone to a battle
They don't have 14, they have 4 usable dragons not riderless or fucked off at Harrenhall. And 2 of those are connected the Queen and her heir. The dragons aren't a surplus resource you can spend freely. Sending even 1 out is a huge risk as well as a reward. You can send legions of soldiers to death and the world keeps turning, but if they send one of their royal family, the consequences are huge for them

Alican wasnt even talking fair when she crept into kings landing so she knew she would not play fair. She had no plan KNOWING what she knew. She didn't even inform her council of what that bitch said. I'm sure they would have urged her to send more than 1 rider so we could still have the Princess and Meyles. The princess was her best confidant!!!!~

All three of them were terrible riders. All of them got caught be surprise by a dragon they knew was SOMEWHERE. Should I gain altitude first? Naw, I'm sure he went home. Good grief, this is like rookie stuff. It's one thing for Lucerys to get caught be surprise, he's a kid. And to some extent Aegon, he's an idiot. But Rhaenys and Aemond should both have way more awareness.

@@Redjack10 the entire plot is joke. Half the cast “grew” and was recast with older actors that are somehow still the same age as the older characters that were previously there. There is no “hero”, they’re all villains…and the acting is non existent…I’ve seen better at my local community theater. It’s just a massive shit show.
