  • Once again... y'all were right... wow. That was awesome. I love this band so damn much, man. This is Yes. It's just not the same without this line up. I love most of the stuff Yes I have heard but, this era, I love every single song.

I was 15 in 1971 when I first saw YES Live with Bill performing Perceptual Change which instantly converted me into a YES disciple. The memory carries on inside my mind and heart. I am glad that you recognize what 70s YES, specifically, gave to us. There was a style in which each member's instrumentation intersected, intertwined and interconnected like no other incarnation. They definitely were touched by an invisible force which you could actually 'feel' when experiencing them LIVE. Their interactive energies and aura were so organic, visceral and palpable on stage as if the music flowed with a life all it's own. (especially if you were Tripping like me during every concert between 72-79 (LOL! total out-of-body) and even in later decades when the lineup would reunite with Alan it was pure magic.

In my opinion this one of the rare great live albums! This and Chicago at Carnegie Hall were both massive! I had to work summers to buy both, and still have them both. Yessongs is the closest I can come to reliving the 4 times I saw them in the seventies! Compared to modern live recordings this holds up very well. Peace & Love, more, more, more!

Yeah, just amazing they could do this back in 1972!?! What a wonderful time to have lived. I was afraid, going to my first YES concert, that I was going to be disappointed. It just seemed impossible to perform BETTER on stage than studio...NOPE. Anytime YES can stretch a song out, the better. 😉

I bought this album in July of '73 (a couple of months after it was released) - my first Yes album purchased. I was blown away, it was Yes in one album (almost). The thing that stood out for me the most was Steve Howe's guitar playing. I thought, why does his playing sound so good and why was no-one else doing anything like this? So intricate, flawless and new. What a sound. And the rest of the band all performing at the top of their game.

This live version is so much better than the studio version. Similarly "The Fish" and especially "Yours is no Disgrace" are phenomenal.
And, as one of your chat buddies said, check-out "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin from their amazing live album "The Song Remains the Same" is definitely a must listen to, with that powerhouse John Henry Bonham on skins.

Been waiting a long time for this one! One of my all-time favorite live Yes tracks (and never reacted to by any other youtuber, as far as I know). Steve's playing here is epic-tier. Just superb. The way he can play an electric guitar - live! - with such delicacy, nuance and precision is nothing short of astounding. The entire band is in top form as they navigate the crests and valleys of this dynamic piece. The extended solos and Rick's subtle but impactful organ playing really propel this track and elevate it above the original studio recording, which is quite a feat.

I drove home in my first car from an Asia gig listening to Yessongs at very high volume (the gig had been loud) and stayed in the car listening to the end when I got home. Being young and stupid, it never occurred to me that the neighbours were all being treated to Yes at their best way past midnight. Next morning I found out they were not all Yes fans! I still listen to it, but usually on headphones now. They were such a powerful band when they were all blasting off together like this.

Noice. Can you imagine what happened when, at age 16, I randomly picked up this album that my older sister had bought, and played it. I was overcome with the structure, skill and virtuosity of the band. So I approached the music in the reverse of what I generally did - live version first.
Man, I played all the records down to the nub - even now I know every note, drum hit and bass run; boy, I just ate it up.
And there you have the framework of musical appreciation and the very high bar that I ran with all my life. Yes, Bill Bruford IS the best [and I've followed a few].

Saw this several times as a midnight movie in college, of course in an appropriate frame of mind! Also, Steve sings harmony as well as Chris, though Chris is usually more prominent. Also, Rick was a bit subdued on this since he didn't play on the original track, and Tony's playing was pretty low-key.

I think this one gets my vote for most "Most Improved Over the Studio Version". This one in particular is an insane study in dynamics and ebb and flow, but all the songs from The Yes Album are kicked into an entirely different gear with these live versions. Sadly on later tours (the 90's and 00's) their attempts to revive "Perpetual Change" fell flat, mainly because Steve Howe insisted on going back to the album's stately tempo and more mellow vibe. The bite and looseness of this performance was lightning in a bottle, never to be seen again.

L33: Watching you listen attentively to Bill's drum solo was freaking awesome. Drummers know what's involved in what they're hearing. Others might tune out during drum solos, we tune in. And you are correct: this song is one where they really go all out live, developing what was already a great arrangement. That middle section reprising just before the solo with Bill and Chris going wild in sync while Steve power washes the jam with color sounds like The Tasmanian Devil's parents gave him ninja throwing stars for Christmas and sent him to play at the hospital's hemophiliac ward. To hear unrestrained exuberant going for it wildness not go off the rails - the mind reels, the fist pumps, the heart soars in joy.

It's beautiful! They added so much life to the sound that was already alive. And bill at the end was absolute fire! That's why he's my favorite drummer I've found on here 😁😁 just absolute dominant drumming. This whole band is so good here 😩

Thanks bro for another great reaction vid. And Yes, nothing beats classic Yes! So yeah, glad to come back home :D Despite requesting Endless Dream as a followup of Machine Messiah (just to explore a bit more of that path) , 70's Yes remains the golden era without a doubt. My christmas present for you might just be a full album request of the 1973 Roosevelt Stadium Concert in New York. lol Not as crystal clear as yessongs but definately the most immersive yes live experience out there. Have a good weekend L33

Yes, you should stay away from the Yessongs videos, the sound recordings, (and the video itself) on the film/video is not as good as the album. I have literally seen Yes live over 50 times, I've seen every lineup. Genius musicians, I believe the best of all time, who took all their album recordings to another level when they played them live. It's great watching you go on your Yes journey, you really get it. Looking forward to your Beatles reactions as well.
