Very nice comparison video. No rubbish, just facts. I’ve had both Subaru and Audi AWD systems and I’d buy either again in a heartbeat. For comfort / quality I’d go German, but for off-road I’d trust either! Subaru are very, very popular here in New Zealand.

I own both, on ‘05 Outback XT and an ‘18 Allroad as well as a ‘10 A3 TDI. Both are awesome in the slippery weather. Can not compare the fit, finish and tech of Audi. My (yes, dated ‘05 Outback XT) is no slouch but at best 25- 29 MPG easy driving. My Allroad driven same way 35-40 MPG. No exaggeration on MPG. Real world calculation. Compared to my ‘10 AUDI TDI at 45 MPG I couldn’t be happier. Both great vehicles. Both reliable (using my ‘10 TDI as comparison). Equipped with proper winter tires, either will go through just about anything. An ‘18 Subie is cheaper, but truthfully different targeted audiences. Audi is much more luxurious and tech equipped. My opinion, Subie an Audi produce best AWD.

Both performed very similar in my opinion. It might seem that the driver was hitting harder on the Audi. But that's just due to the great low-end torque that makes for a fun sportier ride compared to that subaru cvt engine(better gas mileage). So torquey It kicks the rollers away after going over them. That eats your tires up quicker though. Thing is if you're on the market for a great reliable AWD vehicle and don't want to break the bank the Subaru is a much smarter buy. If you have money to burn then even a fully decked out Subaru might still be the smarter buy. I would have love to see you conduct the entire test in "REVERSE" gear as well.

Both looked close. For the prices Subaru charges these days ALL of their cars need another 50 horsepower. You also should have the option of a turbo engine or more powerful base 4 cylinder with any trim level. The turbo Outback, Forested and Legacy all failed because nobody wants to spend 40k plus just for a more responsive engine. You don't need every feature in existence just to get better passing power. Also drop the CVT transmission already, I shouldn't have to wait 3 seconds from the time I floor the car to the time it decides to accelerate while rolling in traffic. My old 07 outback with the 4 speed auto has better response for crying out loud 😂

Luxury brands depreciate more than the Japanese companies. Luxury brands hold about only 30%. Whereas Subaru's in general hold over 60%. Both Quattro and the AWD system in Subaru's are excellent. Audi is a luxury brand and are a beautiful car. It will obviously cost you more in maintenance and repair. Subaru's lineup less and are known for very good reliability. Were comparing apples to oranges here. Audi's have really become a much much better manufacturers of vehicles than the past. Not so for Mercedes or BMW. Arguably Audi's are one of the best luxury brands out there next to Lexus which is always at the top spot for more than a decade. Acuras SH-AWD system has been proven an excellent AWD system. Consumers Reports named Subaru the best company for 2019. Mainly because of the new global platform Forester, Crosstrek and new Ascent 7 seater 260HP turbo that has a 5,000lb. towing capacity with a CVT transmission. Which is one of the best CVT transmissions out there next to Honda's. The new Lexus subcompact class is also using a CVT.

I wonder if the tires are catching the sides of the rollers. It seems the vehicles (especially the Audi) pull out abruptly from the three roller test when the driver applies aggressive power. That may move the vehicle left and right a bit to catch the stationary side of rollers. The driver should have kept the throttle at a steady level. Maybe.

But that only accounts to maybe 1-2 instances a year depending on snow fall. I think adding a "cornering test" would be a better indicator of how an awd system performs. Plus, it would give us a more accurate real world result, being that we have to go around corners everytime we get behind the wheel.

Interesting comparison on (2) very similar systems. After everything is said & done, based on what I'm seeing here, the Outback wins this contest quite handily. Another point to consider is the vehicles cost factor. The Audi is one luxurious beauty & it costs a pretty penny too and is a well built German car. The thing about the Japanese auto manufacturers is they own the patent on copying other automakers technology & then making it better!
Since I own a 2017 Subaru Outback Limited, 2.5i ( $32,385.00 ) out the door, my opinion is no doubt biased. I can say this with authority however concerning the Subie, in the real world of driving, i.e., ( n. central VT ) in the winter. The factory Bridgestone tires, all season M&S Duellers tyres are as useless as " tits on a boar hog ". The car cannot get out of it's own way on a flat surface in 1" of snow, unless it is ultra cold snow with zero moisture. HOWEVER, I installed a set of " winter tires " just (2) days ago & that was the game changer after 19 mos. of ownership with more " white knuckle " moments I ever care to remember on those "JUNK " Bridgestones. I went with the best, i.e., the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV directional winter tyres in 225/60R18. They are surprisingly quiet on the pavement and do they ever dig in the snow! I live in steep mtn. country with a steeper still 350 ft. long d/way. After a few days of testing these tires, the vehicle's traction control light has not come on once as the vehicle now for the 1st time feels controllable on the snowy corners & various grades. The moral of the story here is TIRES... The traction ability of any system, be it 4X4, AWD, 4x2, limited slips in multiple combinations are only as good as the tires will allow...
Great presentation here imho & thank you... :-)

yes, the Bridgestone Duelers are absolute shiite and Subaru should be ashamed to put them on their vehicles. I switched to a set of Yokohama Geolanders after 22k. Have yet to truly test them out, but they heads above the mushy sidewall garbage Duelers. Still would like to put some decent Rallitek springs on, as the stock springs are sub-par as well.
