A very long time ago, when the NES version was released, my now deceased father and my now elderly mother, purchased it for my birthday. Together, my father and I played it through to the end multiple times! It may have been a small thing at the the time, but it now one of my fondest memories of him. So, whenever I see this game; a slight smile will be on my face, recalling those better times. RIP Dad, I miss you!

I loved Jackal and Breakthru at the same time. I was so addicted to these when I was about 10 years old that I would stop by the liquor store to play them every morning before continuing on to school. The problem was that every day I would leave the liquor store later and later until I was eventually getting late to class. One day I was happily playing Jackal, well on my way to getting to school later than ever when I suddenly heard someone yell, "OOOOOOOH, I'M GONNA TELL MOM!!!" It was my bitch sister that was 3 years older than me having an out of body experience, jumping up and down with one hand over her mouth while snapping her other hand at me. Apparently she had decided to stroll into the liquor store that morning, probably for her stupid Apple Now-Laters. As soon as I saw her I grabbed my bookbag, ran right past her in her devil horned glory, ran the hell out of the liquor store like my ass was on fire and never did that again.
Great. Jackal was a favorite arcade game to watch and play at the pizzeria while eating hot pizza and ice cold root beer. Those were fun memories growing up.

I knew it as Top Gunner back in the day and loved it! It was hard and the controls were challenging to say the least, but with enough practice, you would adapt and be rewarded with some really satisfying game play. The NES port was indeed fantastic, and I was amazed at the time by how good it was. I still enjoying firing up the original arcade version on my emulator to this day.

When initially released in the US arcades about October 22, 1986, Konami's Top Gunner had to contend with at least two things: Exidy's Top Gunner, also released in 1986 The Paramount Pictures film Top Gun (starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis), that Konami would later acquire the console rights to, which led to the NES version of Top Gunner being renamed Jackal (its Japanese arcade title).
Such a classic game, amazing game play and control, super fun game for two players, me and my childhood buddy used to play this game for hours, sufficiently challenging, but not impossible.
It was called Jackal on the NES. Either two players could play simultaneously as 2 jeeps or (I think I remeber that) two players could play as one jeep. In the latter version, one could drive while the other would shoot.
I just finished playing, after 20 years I still cannot beat the game. I just have to watch the TH-cam play through to see the end after all these years.
I came here to say that, the NES version was the one that added distinct levels and bosses. Also, the gameplay footage shown has a cheat activated, the real arcade game is difficult and not in a fun way. Bad controls and lots of design choices that were not player-friendly. The NES improved on the arcade in every way except for maybe the graphics.
Regarding the borders in the home versions....they are actually _accurate_ to the arcade's aspect ratio, which was a vertical scroller. Great vid as always , though Pat 😊
This is a very informative video! I didn't know that one of my favorite NES games was actually an arcade port! As an aside, at 6:30 when you begin reviewing the Spectrum port, a high pitched Mosquito tone starts buzzing, which was slightly annoying. Otherwise, 10/10

My parents owned an NES from their college days, which started my hobby of gaming. I tried to share this with my friends, but since I was born in the late 90s all my friends had already moved on to Nintendo 64s and Playstation 1s, and my parents had already moved on from their gamer days, leaving me quite alone in my fondness for playing 8-bit. Being able to feel like I'm sharing a memory with someone who understands is awesome- thank you for making these videos!

Jackal and Ikari warriors were 2 of my all time favs, these games tested your hand eye coordination, you needed skill to complete these on just 10p, so you could hold the high score for everyone else to see.

this could have been a hilarious and fun driving/lightgun game. Have one player driving in a full 3D environment with forward and reverse controls as well as throttle. The gunner could engage targets on screen with thier "light" machine gun and rocket launcher. So there's my pitch, someone take that and run with it.
I somehow never saw, let alone played, Combat School. For whatever reason it didn't seem to pop up anywhere at any of the NYC arcades. At least not that I can remember. When I played Jackal it was actually called Jackal. I always enjoyed it. Maybe I'm thinking of the NES version. I don't remember seeing Top Gunner
The Spectrum port, "the sound is pretty much non existent" except for that horrible high pitch squeal. I wonder if that's in the original or just an issue with that part of the recording?
I totally love your videos, and you actually are The Guy. You know your stuff, and have a laser sharp memory of the real days. I like how you go for a time machine approach, to try to place us back then. Your writing is also sharp, and you obviously use a well-written script and don't waste time yammering in circles like 99% of those who don't script. And that's truly the most important aspect of production value, even if you just threw a camcorder at a screen lol. And yet you do alllll of the systems. I'm really sorry to say it but I just gotta comment on the sound quality. Your voice is quite muted, like you're not speaking into a microphone. But oddly, I can tell that you are speaking into a microphone because of all the super loud air puffs of "s" and "p" sounds. There doesn't seem to be any filters, either physically like a foam or pantyhose style air filter for your "p" sounds, or a digital filter for automatically removing the "p" and "s" sounds (de-popping or whatever they call it in apps like Audacity or your video editing suite), or a digital filter for just automatically improving quality like equalization and compression. These are all pushbutton automatic filters. Listening to it on a 7.1 system (and I'd guess headphones) makes a continuous set of really loud startling boom and rumbling from those subtle oral blasts of air, and it makes me wonder if something's going on outside but then I remember it's just this channel. ;) That's true even if the speech is not loud, which it never is. So that's how all your videos are. But this one in particular has an earsplitting squeal on one of the Jackal versions. I think it's the ZX Spectrum one. I'm sorry, but I would only say this coz I really care! Again, you are THE GUY.

I particularly notice how incredibly professionally charitable you are to the lower end 8-bit systems like the unfortunate ZX Spectrum. That was back when you had to split low-fidelity hairs to find one attribute that even matters at all, like a very very dilute definition of “sound“. lol. Nowadays people would only make fun of such a thing unless it was something Herculean like a demake of Doom. We are not stupid, we can see it for what it is, and those users deserve some dignity unless it’s truly garbage. Any of us 70s and 80s kids could have been born into a house or country with a different system, or none at all! Sometimes I really feel like you say it as if you are actually a reviewer in the 80s. And yet you are so much more thorough than any professional medium afforded us back then. Nobody was able to make even text in much detail at all, or focus on one product. It was mostly bubblegum sizzle fluff for little kids!
@@smuckola I don't know how many videos of mine you have watched but I always try to be fair and find something positive in each version I cover. That doesn't always work out though, some conversions are just downright horrible and there is nothing redeeming about them at all. Take a look at hard-drivin for the Commodore 64 and you'll see what I mean :-) Back to the sound, I've never used any sort of digital filter so I may have to give that a try. Again, I appreciate the nice words. Those are probably the nicest compliments I Have received on the channel so far. If I could give this 100 likes I would :-)
I saw Top Gunner in the arcade back in the day but can't remember if I actually played it. Obv. the NES version was great. Weird that the arcade version in your video at the end is called "Jackal" rather than Top Gunner. I think they may have changed the arcade version's name at some point as well.

I guess it was some mix between intentional brand dilution and its inverse to diversify the two products, all under the same IP umbrella. When I saw it in the arcade in the U.S. it was branded "Top Gunner".
I've never heard that Gryzor was the original name for Contra. I thought Contra was the original name and they localised it for home computers in Europe to Gryzor. Can you confirm you're correct because I can't find any reference to what you said on Wiki or MobyGames?
Yeah, it was always Contra (Kon-to-ra) in Japan and the US. Gryzor in Europe, and Probotector in Pal regions that had to switch everything to robots to get around the rules about violence in video games.
if you ever decide to do a Tribute video to Commando, they put a fun Easter egg of the game in the new Resident Evil 3 remake in the form of a movie poster called "Wolf of the Battlefield" which is the English translation of Commando's original Japanese name "Senjuo no' Ookami"
The arcade game had the CRT monitor in portrait orientation. Your gameplay segment of the arcade game is landscape so the aspect ratio is way off with the game looking squashed to what it really was.

Jackal was neat, the jeep ran over the enemies too. A rare detail in NES and other games.

I never saw combat school arcade game, I was only familiar with it on the Commodore 64 and then later on the mame emulator

Nowadays people would only make fun of such a thing unless it was something Herculean like a demake of Doom. We are not stupid, we can see it for what it is, and those users deserve some dignity unless it’s truly garbage. Any of us 70s and 80s kids could have been born into a house or country with a different system, or none at all! Sometimes I really feel like you say it as if you are actually a reviewer in the 80s. And yet you are so much more thorough than any professional medium afforded us back then. Nobody was able to make even text in much detail at all, or focus on one product. It was mostly bubblegum sizzle fluff for little kids!
@@smuckola I don't know how many videos of mine you have watched but I always try to be fair and find something positive in each version I cover. That doesn't always work out though, some conversions are just downright horrible and there is nothing redeeming about them at all. Take a look at hard-drivin for the Commodore 64 and you'll see what I mean :-) Back to the sound, I've never used any sort of digital filter so I may have to give that a try. Again, I appreciate the nice words. Those are probably the nicest compliments I Have received on the channel so far. If I could give this 100 likes I would :-)
I saw Top Gunner in the arcade back in the day but can't remember if I actually played it. Obv. the NES version was great. Weird that the arcade version in your video at the end is called "Jackal" rather than Top Gunner. I think they may have changed the arcade version's name at some point as well.
Like I said in the video, konami wanted people to see top gunner and think of the movie Top Gun. That's why was change over here
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries That makes sense. I always thought they got a C&D because of the movie name, but then Konami got the rights to make Top Gun. I guess it was some mix between intentional brand dilution and its inverse to diversify the two products, all under the same IP umbrella. When I saw it in the arcade in the U.S. it was branded "Top Gunner".
I do remember having fun running over the soldiers. Took me back to Death Race -- the original run over people (er., I mean "Gremlins) with your car.

I've never heard that Gryzor was the original name for Contra. I thought Contra was the original name and they localised it for home computers in Europe to Gryzor. Can you confirm you're correct because I can't find any reference to what you said on Wiki or MobyGames?
Yeah, it was always Contra (Kon-to-ra) in Japan and the US. Gryzor in Europe, and Probotector in Pal regions that had to switch everything to robots to get around the rules about violence in video games.

The arcade game had the CRT monitor in portrait orientation. Your gameplay segment of the arcade game is landscape so the aspect ratio is way off with the game looking squashed to what it really was.
