Hi Jon great to see fishing on natural water!! Good effort in pretty difficult conditions with the water being so clear, Oh for rain to flush them through 🎣🎣🎣
Love all your match videos as they are very helpful. Particularly love the river ones though. Enjoy seeing how you manage a peg on these venues. Great stuff as always.
Me too! Had them there in the past. Once saw a golden tench at Evesham. Someone also caught a 12oz tench a few pegs up, which came out two weeks earlier off the same peg.
Great video as always Jon,would loved to have seen your face when you drew peg 68 and I bet the last word you said finished in hell...yet getting 4th in the team event was a cracking effort next day...Well done
Hard work on the same peg twice Jon but 4th in the section not too bad in the team event. Well fine winning the team event. Hopefully see you on the bank in the Evesham festival.
great video jon, nothing better than river fishing. i hope you don't mind me asking what was the cable tie on the base of the bait dropper for. cheers jon tight lines.
Great video Jon I haven't fished the Avon for a couple years now think you may of reminded why lol but last time I did was just below Barford weir where I had a bonus 5lb tench 😁👍
Jon don’t know if I missed it but did you not consider a small gbait feeder 3/4 across with worm and caster ,just asking ,but enjoyed video I used to fish there years ago some pegs are rubbish ,but I used to fish a waggler well over get some nice roach .cheers Jon
A gb feeder works on those pegs when there is colour in the water as bream get caught, but with it being so hard and clear a maggot feeder is most people's choices as more likely to get perch and eels on it, but yes it's a definite viable option and maybe would have been better on the day. We'll never know!
well done.. these hard matches were every week for me in the 80's... before all these low diameter high tech lines came out.. id be using 12oz bayer perlon with a squat on an au'lion'dor 26 hook.... admire your persistent workrate and edge scratching.... nice one... (did clive branson beat you. ? ) ... i rekon that river needs a 2 week break from matches..
Eels are an endangered species now with only 1% of the stocks they enjoyed in Victorian days. It's not necessarily down to netting nor angling pressure. All eels should be returned alive, it is now illegal to remove eels for the table. A fascinating fish that needs our help. Nice to see someone else having the kind of results I regularly enjoy. 😂
Loved the bit with the arl fella taking about the Max Winter Wand (I had one of those in the 70s!) while you were eating a Magnum: am I going totally senile, or was the ooomphier version of Max’s rod not called the Magnum?
Proper fishing! Keeps you thinking when it’s that hard, Jon doesn’t it? You did a fantastic job off a rubbish peg which just goes to show how good you really are. I reckon you could catch fish in a toilet, lol. Well done mate! 👍
Jon m8 you should be awarded a medal 🏅 👏 Coping with that 👌 Having to fish 🐟 the same peg lol i think if was you I'd get someone else to PICK 🤣 for you 😉 👍🤣
I popped them on in the morning as I might've been able to put my platform in, but decided against it in the end and sat on the normal staging, but heavy rain was forecast so I just kept them on
noticed you used an MTX2 for day 2 (didn't see for day 1). Why that one rather than the more 'higher end' Matrix models. (I'm in the market for a new pole, and a Matrix is on my shortlist, so curious).
I swap and change poles all the time between my 2 and 4. On the day I was crunching a big float at 15m and just prefer the extra security when you wallop a rig home in 15ft+ of water.
Great video John, reality not overstocked commercial. Why in real terms have a different attitude for individual and team matches. After all you still trying to catch as much as possible.
Cheers, it's simple really as I'm trying to win the match or frame on an individual match whereas I' happy to just secure good section points on a team match, not even a section win. Completely different mindset for me. No chance of gambling on a team match, but fortune favours the brave on an individual match.
Hi Jon to draw the same peg twice is unbelievable or just bad luck!! But you work hard to try and get result, but like they say you can only catch what’s in front of you!! Jon can I ask a question why did you not feed a hemp Line 3/4 meters out and fish tears? Surely it would have been worth a try, just a thought. As ever a great video great effort, thank you 🎣🎣🎣
Only so many swims you can feed but catching on hemp that close at Evesham on a low clear river would almost certainly not have worked. Other venues and conditions maybe.
Well you will go around killing Robins.😆 I enjoyed both matches actually, I’d have loved to have heard your reaction to drawing that peg again! I’d presumed there was no bread because you couldn’t fit it on your side tray. 👍🍌
Hi John, in your video when you initially bait up with two balls of ground bait you then say that it’s very risky topping up again in clear water ? Why is this - is it because it will scare the fish that have settled over. What makes you decide wether or not to do this and what do you do instead ? Just rely on loose feeding ?
The Avon at Evesham is a disaster for a match venue. It has the classic signs of a dying river. You can see the bottom even in mid river. It was one of the greatest stretches of match fishing in the country. I spent hours and days watching England’s best,Ivan,Ken Giles,John dean, ashurst.dave Harrell,Clive Smith.i stayed at the local hotels for many years.this once great river has been destroyed by the
The water clarity is a massive part as it' full of fish but they're so wary. I cannot help but think it is a man-made issue, maybe water treatment or agricultural discharge that leads to it as the Thames near me always has an algae tinge
Fishing is not all about being sat on a man made lake stuffed with carp, Jon this was a absolute pleasure to watch ,thank you for the lesson
Many thanks Marine Boy :-)
Very enjoyable video. A great insight into how a top angler tackles a difficult peg.
Thanks Micky
If you fish rivers and didn't learn from this you need to watch again. Thanks Jon.
Thanks Dean, appreciate that
Cheers Jon. Fantastic as usual.
Cheers

Avon is lowest and clearest I've known it for September

Thanks Jon. Enjoyable as always.

Love the videos, kept me sane with all the covid and when I can’t get out fishing.
Glad it helps Craig
Well done mate ..another great video
Thanks 👍
I really enjoyed that video Jon good variety of fish and you tried every method going. Would have loved to have seen you catch a river tench.

Hard luck Jon for getting drawn there twice you did all you could enjoyed the film thank you.

Magic video, magic angler.
Thanks Brian

Ever in doubt get a magnum out!
Good work on a difficult peg jon.
You got that right!
Great channel mate
Thanks JS

It just helps it empty in soft bottoms. Mustve been on there 10 years!
thanks jon

I think Clive was just a bit further upstream in a diff section that day
Very nice video. I wonder, where can I get the bait dispenser you use on your hooklength?
They are called baitdroppers and readily available from uk tackle shops

Great vid Jon sorry you didn't get a better draw and twice how unlucky tried everything but if there not there there not there!🎣
Thanks 👍

Glad it brought back memories! Earliest I know was the Sigma Wand!
Brilliant video again. Wish you did match videos a little more regular.
Thanks Dave

Well done, Jon! I like watching you fishing natural venues. But why are you wearing waders?

Hi Jon , I noticed the new Sonubaits gear , have you joined them?
Very very happily using all the bait now
Another great film Jon, why use the MTX 2 pole ?
I prefer it when crunching a 4g rig on a spraybar at 15m
@@JonArthur thanks for that, i have a 3, great pole

I was in two minds. Gutted as knew it was a no hoper but ok as I knew what rigs I needed and what to expect.
@@JonArthur yeah yeah woteva- where’s the bananas gone? I do hope you’re getting your 5 a day.
PS Magnums don’t count 🙃

On this pressured bit of river the fish are mega spooky and more feed on their heads often kills it.
What pole do you use John. Finance plays, abigcpartcto me can you suggest a good 14.5pole please
Matrix MTX2 is spot on for a strong 14.5m pole
Excellent video , but when i went to school there were 16 ounces to a pound lol
It still is 16 oz to the lb and 16 drams to the oz!
@@JonArthur but you said 14ounces to a pound lol sorry to be a perfectionist pillock , looks like a hard venue to fish
Ha ha, “14oz to a pound” was a weight estimate and meant “14oz to 16oz” not “there are 14oz in a pound” 🤣
Are you related to Kieth Arthur ,radio4.
Nope

what more proof is needed same peg, same decent angler, next day chopped worm and perch one day. punch and roach the next !!!
Yep, rarely fishes the same two days running
Was that not Tom Hobbs.
No, both Tom Hobbs and Tony Hobbs fish for Oxford and Tony fished on the day
@@JonArthur cheers.👍 Toms a great lad and a good up and coming angler.
Lovely vid to watch in bed , well in
I can think of better bedtime watches than me, but each to their own, ha ha! ;-)
