As far as i knew, Kobo speak English only in collabs and it's more in the passion or cute English. That's if she's in 2-4 person collab. In 4+ people collab she'll stay silent mostly.
And there's something magical about Kobo, because for me who's not her fans, will enjoy almost her every streams. This far she's the only vtuber that i can click random VODs of her and enjoy it to the very end. Not even Gura or Calli or other vtubers who i consider i'm a fan of did it to me. It's, weird but positive. It's magical.
Hololive helped Kobo reach people's eyes, but she undeniably got a core Indonesian audience. Before Kobo, the highest sub count in ID was Moona with just past 1 million, most of which came from Pekora because they had some Iconic minecraft moments. Kobo is now the 6th most subbed Hololive member at 2.17 mil (something that was unthinkable before her debut), and certainly a lot of them came from Indo
this just my take, but i think you are getting too fixated on “what if a vtuber is indie” thing that you ended up unintentionally downplaying their achievements. with a lot of talents trying to join hololive kobo showed holo that she is worthy of being invested on and THAT is an achivement itself. getting hired by such companies isnt just free backer, its proof that your talent have been recognised.

Kobo only needed to audition once and was immediately accepted, and the talents who saw Kobo's audition were sure that if Kobo auditioned at any agency he would definitely still be accepted, with the character he has, plus a good voice and being able to play more than 5 musical instruments. , with his elite English and anime level Japanese, and Kobo also often interacts using Chinese (Mandarin) ... She manly speaks English when she collab with hololive en and holostars en that's the main and popular clips of her you be watching when she's collabing with en. But with 100 percent certainty when she's doing her own streams she's speaking 90 percent of the time Indonesia collabing with ID members she's going to speak 100 percent Indonesia. Also she's the worst ID member in hololive when speaking English.

Kobo definitively speaks Indonesia more. The reason why there's no clip with Indonesia is because there's less clippers (id clippers) translate it to English. Also Kobo only speak English more just when she's collab.
Also idk what you so confused about. Just so you know there already big agency vtuber(both from holo or nijisanji) before Kobo and none of them make it that big because they're barely interact or embrace the Indonesia. Fanbase. Thanks to Kobo cracking yhat wall now other Id vtubers who barely speak Indonesia now speak more of their mother tongue. And to answer about how big indie vtuber can get in Indonesia, it's HARD.... I'm Indonesian and want to answer some of your questions, but that doesn't mean all of my answers are correct because I only answered based on what I know, so I hope this helps you.
Firstly, Kobo Stream is more dominant using Indonesian in streams, whereas for collab with VTuber outside of ID she will use EN, and a little JP because as far as I know she's JP language is limited and because of that his audience ismore dominant Indonesia.
Then if we talk about the context of "Vtuber & subs" Kobo is the biggest not only in ID but also ASEAN with 2 million subs. And about indie vtuber the closest indie vtuber is Gibpuri from Thailand with 1.5 million and from ID I think (sorry if I'm wrong) Mytiha is the biggest indie Vtuber with 800 thousand subs.
last, I think the Kobo phenomenon that exploded is not only because she is part of hololive, Indonesian people really like Japanese culture but ''most'' don't know what a Vtuber is, there are also those who only like anime but hate Vtubers. Hololive itself is a big company but they have only been in ID for about 3 years so only certain people know about their presence, and Kobo is here. I personally know Kobo first compared to Hololive, in ID itself if you ask the normies who don't really know what a Vtuber is "most" people know who Kobo is, or have even heard of her name without knowing that she's from hololive.But I also don't want to erase all the achievements achieved by Hololive ID before the presence of Kobo.In fact, as a Kobo fan I am very grateful to Hololive who has been present at ID and the Gen 1 & 2 who have already raised the name Hololive at ID.
Kobo usually speaks english when she is collabing with EN vtubers, but her solo streams are mostly on indonesian

Vtuber is never a thing in indonesia until kobo debut.
It started back in 2020 with pekomoona, then when ollie arrives more people in Indo knows v-tuber, then it died for a year or so. Then gen 3 comes up, and it got way bigger than ever in Indonesia, especially for Kobo and Kaela.
But i have to say that most people that introduced to v-tuber by Indonesian v-tubers tends to move on to a Jp and En oshi after a while.

I watched kobo a lot, like a shit ton of her clip and her VOD, she is the first vtuber i watched and the one who introduced me to vtubing world. She mainly speaks in indonesian, everything she joking, and talking are very indonesian and everyone in indonesia who understand meme will be relate with kobo and can enjoy her stream, like her stream are for everyone not only for weebs. I know a lot of people who watched kobo even though they're not a weebs. What makes her really famous was she play her strategies in most popular and brain dead app in indonesia, TikTok. She penetrates it and reached a lot of people thus making a lot normies into vtuber world simper. With all the abilities and talent that she has in her arsenal, she isn't only conquering indonesia, but South East Asia. The problem is, vtubing in indonesia is still a nieche and people are not really willing to spent money on their oshi (cause most of us are broke as heck, like average wages in indonesia are 300USD/month, in big city it could be 400$, and the lowest is under 200$). But with help of kobo, the vtubing industry can penetrate deeper into indonesian market. Once you know kobo, you will start knowing other ID girl and you down to the rabbit hole, and idk when will you come out that hole. I feel comfortable here so yeah.
ID girls are seriously really underrated, maybe people thought "oh they are only talking in indonesia", and not support them. when in reality most of them can speak at least 3 languages, ID, EN and JP. They work really hard but most of em sometimes having financial difficulties to make more big projects to branding Their Self. Take examples, risu. She's fuckin nuts with her singing ability, but compared to other holomembers her view counts, member and subscriber are smaller from her EN, or JP counterparts. She could be big, like bigger/par on par with suisei but again, money talks here, music need money to produce.
I hope kobo can open the market here in indonesia even more and also reached outdonesian fans so people know how insanely talented these ID girl is. Sorry for that long ass essay 😅😅😅😅

I would say she tapped into the gaming community of ID youtubers, but not exactly "mainstream". She's not that big yet in the sense that you'll see merch of her in stores.
The biggest game in Indo is "Mobile Legends", a MOBA game. One of the biggest Indonesian ML youtuber reached 1M - 2M easily (this is livestream btw, not recorded video) in every match of the professional competitive scene. Unfortunately due to the Taiwan incident we can't have games from CN. Hololive ID viewership will be bigger if they managed to tapped into the ML community

Hi, a kobo fan and also pure indonesian here. Sorry beforehand for the long ass text i'm gonna write but i just wanna share about my experience and what i have been witnessing as a kobo fan since 2022. I hope this will help explain your confusion hehe. No hate tho, i understand how you don't get what the vid is trying to say since you're not a native or a kobo fan.
When i first get exposed on kobo is from tiktok, which is only recently (at that time) got exposed to the vtuber society and even that is with en vtubers like luxiem and shoto that was very viral at that time. But it was really my first time seeing an indonesian vtuber came into my fyp and she is honestly very eye catching even the first time i watch her vt. She kept on appearing till i actually searched for her in yt and become her fan lol. Fyi, vtubers at that time are still a big taboo even in the weebs community. But when kobo got exposed, she attracted not only weebs but also normies. Most of us got in the rabbit hole from similiar situations and that is by watching the clips spreading around in social medias (which is why i got in too), which i find amusing because her clips made it into the general fyp of normies, not a particular weeb audience. I dont really follow indie vtubers but i know a very popular particular talent and that is mythia batford. But even mythia is at first a part of a vtuber company before terminating contract and went indie. But yeah, the reason she got viral here might be because of her humor which people refer to as 'very indonesian'. This might be because kobo herself is actually not very familiar on vtubers when she first started and so her style of streams are more similiar to how the local streamers stream. Her being overly familiar with indonesian inside jokes helps too tho lmao. Oh and if you still don't get how popular kobo is here in indonesia, here are some examples that might help :

she collabed with many popular local non-vtuber streamers
she once made a random song about her minecraft wolf/dog 'jerry' and that song went viral to the point that some random elementary school child sang it without knowing kobo
many vtubers cover her ori song oh asmara, even non-vtubers did it too
she collabed in an ori song with an indonesian girlband
if you check out her first birthday stream, it's divided into 2 parts, 1st part for mostly holopro members and 2nd part prepared specifically for indonesians that is titled 'kondangan' (a type of cultural celebration here in indonesia). In that 2nd part she invites every popular non-vtuber and vtuber id streamers she knows and also some popular boyband and girlband's members including a JKT48 member (ID version of AKB48)
What is noteable here is how kobo communicates with the viewers and also her humor that really fits into the local market. Also while she doesn't have her merch randomly sold in supermarkets here in indonesia merchs are sold in a specific merch store which is very rare or anime conventions, most of us buy merch via online market though since it is hard to find merch shopes/sellers offline. So no, you can't measure a vtuber's popularity by that.
