I was caught in a rip current at Richard's Bay north of Durban South Africa. I was body surfing off the beach; then floated on my back for a rest for a short time. When I finally rolled over , I was stunned to see how far I'd drifted offshore. I panicked ... frantically swimming against the current. I quickly exhausted myself. I noticed a line of drift debris & reasoned that it was not moving, so I swam over thru it. Almost immediately I felt the current slowly moving onshore. So I had a long swim back ashore, through some rather big waves. I was too tired to properly bodysurf. When I got ashore, I could not walk. My friends were sitting around a fire, drinking beer & smoking Ganja. I was really POd that no one had noticed that I was in trouble. I never went swimming without swim fins again.
1. Swim parallel. Sure it won't always work but it is your highest chance for survival 2. If you're on the beach, always watch for people getting pulled by currents. I once called 911 from my hotel balcony and they quickly got to the guy who'd been pulled beyond the waves
Summer on the calendar may be over, but hundred degrees days will carry on into early November here, which is why it sucks to shut down residential pools at complexes corporate landlords! Adults use these to maintain wellness and strength throughout the year.
