I accidentally broke the screen of my Kindle 4 last night, it's been with me for almost 10 years and I'm absolutely destroyed... I guess it's time to replace it 💔

I bought the kindle 4 in high school. It was really nice, because I was in AP English and UIL lit crit. So I had to read a lot of books. Having them all on one device was so nice, and most of the classics I had to read were free to download
I have the Kindle 4 and the Kindle 8. The 4th, having analog buttons and no touch screen, no light, is the closest you get to a paper book. You don't accidentally touch the screen, and if you just read novels like me, it is still the best. I know it is slow to search for a word in the dictionary, but I take it as a learning process: you memorize the words better in the process. It is very well built, metallic on the front and rubbery on the back, very slim and sturdy, you feel the quality. It is nice to change pages actually with a physical button. I don't care about light or waterproof, who reads in a pool anyway, or in the dark, I just read pure text without distractions. So for me the 4th gen is my favorite.
Just bought a Kindle Oasis ( 10th generation ) with the official cover and this is perfect for me , I’m reading way more now , taking everywhere I can Plus I have all the free E-books I want
Me too, and I'm glad that after 6 years, they still keep the software up to date with the latest models. My Touch and Paperwhite fell behind after ~2 years and stopped receiving some of the major improvements in fonts and other ui elements

I started off with Kindle Keyboard in ‘09 when i was in high school and got every one of them up until I just got a paperwhite yesterday. Totally in love! Love that is waterproof up to 60 mins.
I just started using my Paperwhite again from over 6 years ago. I wanted to be a purist and just read paper books, but it was getting too difficult to find quiet spaces with adequate light. My wife told me just to hook it up to the library and BAM...I have all the reading I could ever have time for (not much with 2 young boys, but hey, it works).
I was going to get a new Kindle as they've dropped to just $50 on sale... But I decided to dig out my ancient first gen Paperwhite. Turns out it's still an excellent e-reader for what little I read. No reason to upgrade!
I'm new to the e-readers family, I found that my brother was using the Kindle 4 5:00 and now I'm using it just to see if I like it enough to upgrade. Great video BTW 👍🏿
The first e-reader I ever owned was the Kindle Touch back in 2012, and its battery life was amazing, even when reaching 0% you could still use it for a couple more days. After 7 and a half years of use, I decided to upgrade it to the 4th Kindle Paperwhite (Waterproof) recently this month, and I can't help but feel misgivings about its battery life compared to the Kindle Touch, maybe I was spoiled, but now I have to charge this thing roughly every other week, plus the sleep mode on it drains half of what's left if I leave it more than one day suspended, and the magnet cover contributes to that if I forget to turn it off entirely. Aside from the battery life, it is an improvement in every other aspect, but this newer model is giving me a hard time getting used to it...
@@jeremiahbachmann3901 A year later, now I can say I'm fully accustomed to the Paperwhite, and the battery life is great as well, I guess I just got used to it. Now I couldn't do without its great features, it was a great investment 😁
Would having it on airplane mode help with the battery life? I don’t know myself, just testing it on my oasis. Seems to drain faster than I can say oasis.
@@twingytwango6971 Reading my comment a year later, I admit I was being quite whiny... The battery misgivings were not all true to be honest, it only took a few weeks for the battery to "settle in" since out of the box. Now it works just fine, battery lasts about 3 to 4 weeks and I'm very happy with it. You have a Oasis, my advice is that after a couple charges it'll work fine, it's only when they're new that the battery drains a bit faster. So it's OK.
This helped a lot. My wife bought an Oasis, then I bought one. But are “10th gen” but mine didn’t have that Dark Grey Stripe going down the back of the device.
@@rayofsunshine7343 if u want to read while in the bathtub (but i guess the touch screen can go crazy if it actually gets wet. My phone does, anyway. Though i can bring it to the bathtub and watch videos for example. Or read, i guess)
I’ve owned all of them. I miss my 1st gen and Kindle 2/DX. The paper white technology is obviously better, but those original models were so amazing to me.
@@jeremiahbachmann3901 It was a big hobby for me at the time. I was an English major in college, and the original Kindle 1 was pretty fascinating. When e-readers first came out there was a lot of competition in the market. Each upgrade brought better hardware/software features and a sharper e-ink displays. The only one I didn't like was the first Kindle Touch. Back then, I would argue, the upgrades were always worth it. Once the Paperwhite came out though, I kept that for a number of years. I am on a 2019 Paperwhite now. The technology got established and the fad kind of died out.
@@vanilaaa9168 Get the Paperwhite. The new edition should be within your price range. You don't need to get the "Signature" edition, just the regular Paperwhite. Reading will never be the same for you again! Enjoy.
The kindle Voyage was a very good device, my mom is still using it after a few years with me and, to be honest, it's at least as good as the 3rd version Oasis that i am using right now (and the Oasis is a really good and pleasant ereader to use, don't get me wrong).
Thanks. My Kindle Keyboard still works perfectly. More than I can say for the newer models. And the latest Basic, returned, has the worst contrast of any Kindle I've ever owned. I'm tired if their mistakes. Kobo from now on.
Love the video! Also started with the Keyboard in 2011 and then switched to the Voyage back in 2015 which i've been rocking till this day. Might upgrade to the Oasis in a couple of years if they keep improving on it (USB-C, better battery, or even color e-ink). Can't believe I've been using a Kindle for close to a decade now. Here's to another decade of Kindles!
Until I saw this video, I always thought I had a Kindle 2. It's actually a 3rd gen one, grey with keyboard and page turn buttons just like the one shown. I do have a basic Kindle ($70 CND) with backlight as of this past year for reading in the dark, but my original Kindle 3 is still working well and battery life still lets me read 2-4 books before recharge is necessary.
My first one was the Kindle 3 in 2011. I was in high school and I loved it. I later bought the Paperwhite 2 in 2014 because of the light and it’s been my companion ever seen.
That is excellent and very useful presentation for what can be a confusing topic. I am thinking of buying a Kindle, possibly second hand and this puts the model line into perspective. Thank you.
I started with a kindle keyboard when my parents got it for me for my 12th birthday. They probably got it for me so I’d stop asking them to take me to the library every week. Since then, I’m now 24 and have upgraded to a 2016 kindle paperwhite as of last year. I don’t see myself updating until this one breaks. If I want to use it in the tub I’ll use a plastic ziplock bag. These devices are one of the most durable pieces of technology made by amazon.
Same!! My parents got me the kindle keyboard when I was younger because I read a lot and when that stopped working, I got the 7th gen paperwhite. I never want to buy another one to be honest because it’s so durable and that way I can reduce electronic waste.
Voyage is the best; print is as sharp, razor sharp, and black as the print on a brand new newspaper. Then the Oasis 3's screen is the closest in size to an actual book. I just go back and forth between the two. I also have the first Oasis, but lost the evenly brightness lottery and reading on the dark is plain annoying, otherwise it's an excellent design. No better friend than a Kindle.
I got the 4th Gen kindle since it came out as a gift and I still use it to this day. I love it to bits and hopefully it will last me a few years more since I tend to use it a lot.
so I got the kindle keyboard/3 and then used it all the way until now. It still works. However, I just got the newest paperwhite and am totally loving the upgrade.
My fist kindle was the 4 and it is still my favourite kindle because of the buttons. After that broke I have 2 kindle 8's because they were cheap but they both got bricked from a faulty power bank. And finally I now have a paperwhite 4 which is amazing in every way except for the fact it has no buttons. I miss my buttons
Mine was the 3rd generation one. It was wonderful. I could travel with a load of books on one device. Just got the paperwhite signature one on Black Friday.
Great video. I can honestly say I've had a Kindle Touch, a me two Paperwhite readers. 2018 being my last one. I'm looking forward to a Kindle Oasis Color reader. I was in progress of purchasing an Oasis Three until I read about the color E-ink readers this year. I know Amazon will be jumping on the bandwagon soon enough.
The special offers came about with the 4th gen Kindle. IIRC it was either $79 with special offers or $110 without. Something like that. I've had it since 2010 and it's the only ereader I've bought.
I'd love to see a comparison of the services/platforms. What makes a "walled-garden" device better than an unlocked one? Is it simply better/easier to use your phone, vs. an ereader? What sort of customer base does the ereader appeal to these days, and is there significant growth potential there, considering the ubiquity of phones? I'm a huge fan of Eink style displays, and you'll pry my Kobo Aura out of my cold dead hands, but I wonder about the future of ereaders in general.
Haptic buttons aren't gimmicks. I love the haptic response on my Kindle Voyage and I can easily use them day or night. The price was far too high back then, but you can pick one up used super cheap and it's comparable to a modern Kindle
I still have and use Kindle 4 and I am absolutely loving it. The only feature I'm jealous of not having is front lighting. Other than that it is perfect!
You should stick with the kindle 4. My kindle 4 died recently and I got the Kindle 10. It's much thicker, which surprised me, the batteries aren't that improved, the screen quality and refresh speed are only negligibly quicker and the biggest thing, the plastics are very bad. The back part is slippery and often the device slips out of my hand. the front part attracts too many fingerprints whenever I touch the screen to changes. I like the kindle 10. But I have the feeling they barely improved the product in 6-7 years.
@@sphericalcow6014 front light, much bigger storage options (most newer models), newer OS, Goodreads integration, audible support (like touch and whatnot, on some models), 4G LTE data (some models), KFX support (and support for Enhanced Typesetting), improved contrast, faster refresh rates, support for more books, better PDF support, and for the Paperwhite 3 onwards and Oasis (and Voyage)- a display with nearly twice as many pixels per inch so it's even cleaner. Also, more fonts and Bookerly + Amazon Ember. Oh and VoiceView. Just so many new features- and official book cover screensaver support. Also, waterproofing on some models.
Amazons kindle line is the perfect ebook setup. Their hardware sells the software. They tried the same thing with the Fire line, but it has two problems: the software store is missing a lot of heavy hitters, and the hardware itself is very low end.
I have the Kindle Paperwhite 7th generation, 3rd edition. I am really fascinated and inspired by ereader technology. So much so, I plan on seeking out other ereaders out there. However, the Amazon Kindle will remain my primary device that I use.
You missed the DX Graphite. When my DX broke, I had learned the difference and replaced it with a Graphite. Unlike the previous DX, it has a Pearl screen.
I got the Kindle Keyboard (3rd Gen then) in June of 2011 (my uncle got it from UK as they were not available in India then). My brother put his elbow on it and broke the screen and Amazon for some reason shipped me a brand new Kindle 4 for free all the way to India. I used that for 1.5 years before it's screen also inexplicably broke. My dad gifted me the first generation paperwhite in April 2013 which I used for about 3.5 years before upgrading to the 300 ppi white Kindle Paperwhite 3rd gen in Oct 2016. My dad took the old paperwhite. And now 4.5 years later, the 3rd gen paperwhite is going strong. Might get the oasis next year just for the bigger screen and the page turn buttons but waiting to see what the 5th gen paperwhite will turn out to be. My favourite kindles are still the 3rd and 4rth generation though. Those page turn buttons were just brilliant.
I have been choosing between PW 4 and Kobo Clara and I'm really happy I chose the Kobo. It is so much nicer, no ads, better front light. It manages to get the details right which make it so much nicer to use, the UI is great for reading not constantly showing into your face online features and stores, details like book cover from the book you are reading on the sleep screen. It is not waterproof but I would not trust any device which is waterproof but warranty doesn't cover the water damage. PDF support is not that great tho, but who the hell buys 6" ebook reader for PDFs. And the really important thing is the size, why is PW 4 so huge? It is bigger than many 7" devices. The only thing why would I consider PW 4 is the store, which is just best on the market.
I owned the original Kindle with free 3G. I got it after there was an Oprah promo discount (I think it was still $350). I think I've had 4 or 5 other models since. I currently have a Paperwhite and 2019 Oasis. Kindle still sucks for reading PDFs and word docs, but it is an excellent book reading experience. I have a remarkable tablet that is kind of crappy for books. I want a relatively affordable all-in-one e-ink Android 10 tablet with a Snapdragon processor,, native Google Play, USB C charging and a stylus for note taking. So basically an upgraded Onyx BOOX Max3 with better pricing and better Google play software integration. Fingers crossed...
I bought a Kindle Keyboard in 2010 and it was the best one I've ever had. Easy to navigate and organise, 4G and I thought the battery life was reasonable. It lasted about 6 years and I'm a serial book-reader (no pun intended) None of the kindles I've had since could hold a candle to it. I still have it although, sadly, it no longer works
I have the original Kindle with Box and the case. Along with Kindle 3, Kindle Paperwhite 2, Kindle Voyage, and Paperwhite 4. Over the years I believe quality control has gone downhill. I had to exchange my Voyage twice because the buttons wouldn't work. Now after 1 year I'm having problems with the Paperwhite 4 not registering my swips, and page turns. Or it jumps ahead 2-3 pages and I have to go back.
Although not used, I still have the 1st gen kindle purchased in May 2008 for $399. Not sure what I was thinking paying so much, but it does still work even today. The only thing that's degraded somewhat in its functionality is the scroll wheel. One thing is certain: the screensavers on the original are better than any that have come subsequently.
I bought one for around $10 a few months back in an old shop somewhere in Wales... turns out it's a gen 4 which seems to be the worst one, but I'm gonna try using it to see if I like eReaders.
My first and only Kindle is the 4th Gen Model. Still going strong 11 years later, although I recently took it out of its OEM leather case and the case broke, so I'm now, after all of these years, riding bareback¬ 😱and loving it. There is a small scuff mark, on the front panel, near the Screen, but the longevity of this thing is amazing. I'm weighing up whether, or not, to upgrade to the latest model, or to just get another case. Tbh, I much prefer the physical page turning option, not a big fan of having to continually keep tapping the screen!
I pulled out an old Amazon Kindle, which you haven't mentioned! It is black, no cameras, 5.5gb internal memory, no memory card slot & it's not HD but it has a colour screen & I think it's 7 inches, it appears to have stereo speakers, & it has "kindle" engraved in the back casing, has a tiny round power button & no volume rocker buttons, it has a red LED next to the micro USB charge port & turns green when fully charged.
Great, I was waiting for something like this forever, however... You missed one kindle :) Amazon made one and only pink version of kindle keyboard for Stephen King as thanks for write kindle exlusive "UR" :)
4:04 The Kindle 3rd gen was also the first one to be available at a subsidised price with ads, so I think the price with ads was $99. 7:16 Ah yes, the Futura font. I always used that on my original Paperwhite back in the day.
Man Kevin you certainly know a crap ton of information about e-readers. it's quite amazing. You've been following us for a long time and your comments cause a lot of discussion in the office here amongst us
Kevin about your no copyright music identify playlist: i used r/namethatsong's bot on reddit, in the weekly Thread, and it worked for me on an old video some months ago
I have a Kindle Paperwhite (2015) and a Kindle Oasis (2020). Both models still work like a dream today. With the release of the new Kindle Colorsoft (2024), it would be interesting to see a larger Oasis-esque design in-color.
Loved the video, however one thing you said stuck with me. You talked about Battery life and said it is pretty much the point of an ereader. I don't feel like that is the case tbh. It is important and great for sure, but I think the most important thing for an ereader is that it reads more like a real book and not like a digital screen that is backlit. Somehow, I think without that fact nobody would even want an ereader even if the thing lasted for 800 years. Unless we are talking end times. End times I want an 800 year device. :)
I've had them all Including all the Sony models (yeah I'm an old fart). Truth be told, I don't like the flush screens. Just a couple months ago I bough my wife the Paperwhite while I bough myself the new basic. So, while I have tons of E-Readers hanging around the house I mostly use my Likebook Mars at home. I use my Kindle basic for travel (or my Jetbook Lite). Believe it or not the Jetbook Lite is still a capable E-Reader. I load it with 2800 mh AA's LiPo's and it has an incredible battery life With an very readable screen.
I recently got an used Kindle Paperwhite 6th Gen off Ebay, and even tho it's old (2013), I'm in LOVE with it, I love the feeling of the screen and I love that I can download any book I want on it instead of having to buy them. Don't get me wrong; I love physical books, but they're expensive (even used) and take up lots of space.
I've never really seen the point in upgrading. My newest Kindle is a Paperwhite I bought at a flea market. Newer generations just don't offer any improvements worth the pricetag. E-ink is e-ink is e-ink.
I have used kindle since kindle keyboard and just recently got a kobo forma. The build of kindle is definitely better but if amazon doesn’t continue to step up the game, they may lose the market to their competitors. Overdrive on kobo is king.
I still have my 2009 Kindle ( the 3rd generation), which works perfectly. I now have to buy a new one because Amazon no longer supports this model. I’m bummed 🙁.
Honestly, if a reader is spending that much on an ereader then you should just assume they’re gonna read for at least 2 hours each day. 😐 Excluding the ones for whom the price point is nothing.😶
The newer Kindle paperwhite 3 still with and 'edge' and only touch screen (and which was some 80 dollars cheaper) was not an improvement to the great Kindle voyage (which had the amazingly good and greatly improved all flat screen, as well as the forward and backwards 'buttons' back again on both the left and right sides, so u dont gradually have to make parts of the screen dirty when touching it all the time when flipping pages). The physical buttons on Kindle 4 and 5 r still the best ways to change page on a Kindle. Sadly though, they will probably never come back on the new Kindles.
I'd really like a Kindle, or any ebook reader, that was the size and shape of a paperback book. Something akin to the dimensions of the Fire 7. Is there some reason why all basically all devices with eInk screens are sort of squat and wide?
i can think of a couple of possible reasons. most of them being connected to the display resolution. 800x600 is a standard 4:3 which was probably easier to manufacture. also if you look at the beginning of the video, the first two were quite elongated. the overall shape resembled a book shape, but it had keyboard, which left less space for the "page". when they ditched the keyboard, it was cheaper to just reduce the length instead of manufacture new elongated displays. i also think that most books have more white space (margin) on top and bottom of the page, compared to the left and right, so the text itself does not have the same aspect ratio as the page. that white space/margin is used for holding the book. but since e-readers have bezels you don't need white space on the display. but the bezels at least 10 years ago were designed more by technological ability than "how much room you need to hold the book". and now you need quite a lot of space for your finger to hold the device, as if it overlap with the text - the display, it would turn the page. you don't have that with real book, you can hold it over the text. i guess all those things just stuck. to be honest when i read on my phone, which is more elongated, it feels strange, although the aspect is more close to the books. i guess it's some kind of mind trick to think it's even longer and narrower than it really is, when it's display.
@@IcoKirov Thanks. Some good thoughts. It's not a huge deal. But I just like that paperback book shape. And the Fire 7 is much closer to that shape. But, obviously, I prefer reading on my Paperwhite. Unless it's a comic, Kindle-in-Motion book, or something with extensive color illustrations.

@@rayofsunshine7343 if u want to read while in the bathtub (but i guess the touch screen can go crazy if it actually gets wet. My phone does, anyway. Though i can bring it to the bathtub and watch videos for example. Or read, i guess)
I'd also love the wrap-up of other e-readers! I'm a big Kindle person myself, but I'd like to see how other ones came along!
9:14 - that was my first Kindle. I had NO idea about the earlier versions of the Kindle! Now I will be buying the 2018 version.
I’ve owned all of them. I miss my 1st gen and Kindle 2/DX. The paper white technology is obviously better, but those original models were so amazing to me.
Why does one need to upgrade that often? Seriously, I'm curious. I have 1st gen Paperwhite and it is still as good as new.
I just want a simple one that I can just read on which one do you recommend that I can get under from up to 150 pounds
@@vanilaaa9168 Get the Paperwhite. The new edition should be within your price range. You don't need to get the "Signature" edition, just the regular Paperwhite. Reading will never be the same for you again! Enjoy.
I would love a Kobo Review, please!
Yeah! It would be great!
and onyx
The kindle Voyage was a very good device, my mom is still using it after a few years with me and, to be honest, it's at least as good as the 3rd version Oasis that i am using right now (and the Oasis is a really good and pleasant ereader to use, don't get me wrong).
Thanks. My Kindle Keyboard still works perfectly. More than I can say for the newer models. And the latest Basic, returned, has the worst contrast of any Kindle I've ever owned. I'm tired if their mistakes. Kobo from now on.
Extremely thorough. Informative and entertaining, thanks for this great vid!
Thank you.
Awesome video, I love my Paperwhite, it's almost perfect with its water resistance and cover, the only thing missing maybe is warm light
What a nice trip through memory Lane 😍
I still have the Kindle Touch 3G. That thing is a beast and still works beautifully 😍
so I got the kindle keyboard/3 and then used it all the way until now.
Loved my kindle touch ❤️
But I still love my Paperwhite 3. My next will definitely be an oasis, just for the ergonomic design.
A retrospective on Kobo devices would be interesting. Maybe a retrospective on some of the advancements in ereader technology since the early days?
Great video. I can honestly say I've had a Kindle Touch, a me two Paperwhite readers. 2018 being my last one.
I'm looking forward to a Kindle Oasis Color reader. I was in progress of purchasing an Oasis Three until I read about the color E-ink readers this year.
I know Amazon will be jumping on the bandwagon soon enough.
The special offers came about with the 4th gen Kindle. IIRC it was either $79 with special offers or $110 without. Something like that. I've had it since 2010 and it's the only ereader I've bought.
My first Kindle was the kindle keyboard (kindle 3) in 2010. It was the first kindle available in the UK.
I have a kindle voyage but I freaking loved my 2 first 4th gen kindle
I agree it is the best ever. It allowed so many to discover the e reader world
I'd love to see a comparison of the services/platforms.
@@badcatalex I use none of these except frony light. And I'm sure most users won't
Who's gonna buy a sim and a network plan for their kindle? Lol
This video showed up at just the right time for me. Cheers!
I still have my Gen 1 kindle. It’s not weird shaped. It’s beautiful and sculpted and fun.
I like the 1st gen too.
Oasis 2019. I luv mine.
Hi. Have you upgraded it?
This was amazing, thank you.

Thanks! I do use Reddit, so I'll check that out. Thanks!
I have a Kindle Paperwhite (2015) and a Kindle Oasis (2020). Both models still work like a dream today. With the release of the new Kindle Colorsoft (2024), it would be interesting to see a larger Oasis-esque design in-color.
I wish Amazon would experiment with different sizes again. Another Kindle DX, a Kobo Mini sized Kindle. Just something different
I'm still rocking the Touch, but I'm getting a Paperwhite for Christmas :)
Nice wrapup.
I wish my XD was still supported, I really liked that thing.
Am I the only one that prefers the physical button controls instead of the touch screen?
Everyone does! I can't wait for this decade+ of boring touchscreen slate devices to end.
@@nathanw7894 I love it what
I still have the kindle touch from 2011. Works like a charm.
I have used kindle since kindle keyboard and just recently got a kobo forma. The build of kindle is definitely better but if amazon doesn’t continue to step up the game, they may lose the market to their competitors. Overdrive on kobo is king.
There's Overdrive for Kindle. I use it with my library.
manybalby it’s only available to the US sadly. That’s why I have to use kobo for overdrive.
I still have my 2009 Kindle ( the 3rd generation), which works perfectly. I now have to buy a new one because Amazon no longer supports this model. I’m bummed 🙁.
The Oasis 3 is rad and I wanted one for reading translated manga but it's too expensive so I'm just gonna wait for a color one
The Kindle Keyboard and 4th gen are so nostalgic for me now, lol. I was reading exclusively on them for like 6 years.
started with my moms kindle 4- contemplating wether i´ll get one myself or upgrade to another model
When you say "About a month" for battery life, do you mean Amazon's standard of using the kindle for 30 min. a day?
Who reads a book 30 min a day? 😂
@@IaconDawnshire Amazon, apparently
Imagine now, during quarantine, reading 8 hours a day...
Honestly, if a reader is spending that much on an ereader then you should just assume they’re gonna read for at least 2 hours each day. 😐
Excluding the ones for whom the price point is nothing.😶
Do one for Kobo lineup too
I loved my kindle voyage - best kindle ever!
I wonder what the very best kindle is out of all of them?
Watching this made me realize that the best kindle with the most value for money is kindle paperwhite 4. Bonus if you buy it on sale.☺️
Still using a kindle touch. Although to be fair, it’s got some scars. In silver.
I have a voyage. For those who have a Oasis : how strong is it ?
I had many screen failure because of small shock.
*
Goodereader* This video was simply great. *Question* Any word yet whether Amazon will bring dual band Wi-Fi (802.11ac) to the Kindle any time soon?
If I remember correctly, the kindle touch had text to audio feature as well
The reason I still use the Touch. Great to listen to books while driving.
would love a similar video of kobo and onyx
When can we expect a new model of Paperwhite or Oasis?
Awesome video! You made a small mistake: The Oasis 2 wasn't the first Bluetooth Kindle, the Kindle (Basic) 8 was
