The Beta Band makes me feel like a child again. Every emotion I feel when listening to them, feels brand new, and I love it. My 8 month daughter already loves them!
This guys don't get enough credit. They were fantastic song writers, they could go from goofy (Smiling) to danceable (The House Song) to epic (Simple) to sad (Gone) to inspiring (She's The One), they did styles for many bands future (Dance O'er The Border with LSD soundsystem), they were fantastic live. But most importantly, the fact that they could go from goofy to tear inducing, the fact that at times the instruments might sound like they aren't being played with strength (Needles In My Eyes), or that they included random sound effects of the enviroment at the beginnig of a song (Inner Meet Me), or that sometimes they wouldn't say lines in the most musically correct way possible (Eclipse). All together create a feeling of closeness, a feeling that this guys are real people like you and me and not just music producing machines, a feeling that they are also complex individuals with not just one face to them, a feeling that no other band has given to me before, which is why I believe this: The Beta Band is the most human band of all time.
Thats a very cool description mr Monkey.. we were intensely human, you're quite right.. Im on stage, playing the bass and looking like a knob, but watching this, I remember how indebted and connected I felt to the audience, the crew, the other dicks in the band, like it was something we were all equally a part of and doing together.. not in a cloying, thank you speech way, where everyone from god to the green cross code guy gets a shout out, but in the way that we were all feeling it and just kinda grateful, amazed even, that we had gotten that far, considering how entirely obtuse and stubborn we had been, doing the opposite of what we were supposed to be doing, whenever possible.. you mention Needles in My Eyes, which is the perfect example, the reason it sounds that way, is because we chose to play the instruments we were each the least proficient on ( shit ) to protect the fragile simplicity of that wonderful song.. I promise you, siting down to play the drums, when you basically, can't, in front of thousands of people, is a guaranteed way to keep the potential rock cockery at bay..!
What a great description of an amazing band that sadly, i discovered all too late. But with a tidy back catalogue to fall in love with i still feel a lucky man...
I'm a musician 20 years a go ... I heard million of albums and bands, but form me this guys, is the best band of UK and his generation in the world, greetins from México ... Respect!!!!
Something about this performance and the entire crowd singing along at the end; Incredible ending to a fantastic song. Reading comments about this being their last show, the ending crowd singing along makes it all the more powerful. If this moment was the very end of this band, it couldn't have been any more powerful. Absolutely incredible.
Seen them 3 times back in the 90 's and amazing live. Yeah I'm old now, nearly 50 haha. Being in your 20's was a mental time for live bands in 90's and early 00's. Seen em all!!
Listening to Beta Band 3 Eps this morning.....what a great if un-discovered band of our time! Music is 'hypnotizing'.... very much reminds me of Beck and Cake....love the Beta Band sound!!!
for all of you saing, tha the beta band, have no enoughe credit, let me tell you, there is a guy in Valdivia, Chile, carreteando con ellos, a las 1:16 am, on a thursday, and singing along, so you made it guys.
Since that iconic scene from "High Fidelity", when John Cusack's character played this song and said "look what will happen" I keep doing the same thing...when I play this music somebody come to me and ask who's playing...there is something about this music...something magical, inexplicable
First heard this song in 1998 on Australian radio station Triple J. Forgot the name of the band/song and heard it on its sister station Double J some 24 years later. To say I was psyched to hear the song again was an understatement, only this time I remembered the group and song. Good to have it back, needed this!

Antony Holt ...I loathe and cringe whenever I hear "...they may not be the best (anything) but...". I dont need someone elses opinion (media, et all) to label anything as 'the best'. Just saying thats all.
Yes, me too! I'm glad I can now hear and experience it both ways, to mean both things. I'm coming off a run of seven devastating years that began when my "little" sister, my beloved Jenny, took her life. While grieving this loss, I helped my mother care for my dad as we lost him to the obscenely cruel ravages of dementia. As this occurred, my own husband signaled his departure from my life mere weeks before our 20th anniversary. Amidst vague mutterings about me not cooking for him often enough, he began hooking up with the ex I listened to him describe in wholly unremarkable terms for two decades. Yet, as this true "junkyard fool with eyes of gloom" vanished in the rear-view mirror of my life, this song was a balm, my mantra: "I will be alright. I will be alright, I will be alright, I will be alright!" The best part is that I knew it was true. I would and I am. At the same time, I like the idea of people on the side of light and love (which I believe still includes most of us) saying to each other "I will be your light" and repeating it indefinitely until all who suffer know they are not alone in the dark.
Totally agree. There has never been a more underrated band. The thing they had was seeing them live. They could capture a entire crowd that have never heard of them in seconds.
They did this to me at Glastonbury 2000. Went to watch Basement Jaxx who played after them, I'd never heard of the Beta Band and I've been a fan ever since.

Thank you so much for uploading! This is just incredibly good. I am glad they did not only capture this on DVD but also released it on a CD (and on Spotify, where I discovered it now). The end is just goosebumps, with the audience singing. Imagine how the must have felt. I would think that from time to time they need watch this, to remember the feeling, standing on stage, with the audience singing.

Just a wee correction. The last ever Beta's gig was at The Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh on 5th December 2004. This was recorded on 29th November 2004.
What a band - in some ways forerunners to the big and brilliant Elbow sound ( as in One Day Like This). Short-lived, but brilliant and life enhancing! The Steve Mason album is a reassurance that the essence of the band continues to develop.
