The 1957 BMW Isetta 300. The Italian German car that saved the automaker! We're looking at a U.S. model that undergone a full nut and bolt restoration. It's our 1st time behind the wheel of an Isetta....what a blast! The original design for this car belongs to the Italian automaker Iso., but also a refrigerator maker! (see any resemblance?) Unfortunately this car is not available for sale, but if you have any specific questions or need automotive advise we are only a click away. All links down below.
Isetta written description provided by Wikipedia:
The Isetta is an Italian-designed microcar built under license in a number of different countries, including Argentina, Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, Germany, and the United Kingdom.[7] Because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows, it became known as a bubble car, a name also given to other similar vehicles.
In 1955, the BMW Isetta became the world's first mass-production car to achieve a fuel consumption of 3 L/100 km (94 mpg‑imp; 78 mpg‑US). It was the top-selling single-cylinder car in the world, with 161,728 units sold.
The car originated with the Italian firm of Iso SpA. In the early 1950s the company was building refrigerators, motor scooters and small three-wheeled trucks. Iso's owner, Renzo Rivolta, decided to build a small car for mass distribution.[10] By 1952 the engineers Ermenegildo Preti[11] and Pierluigi Raggi had designed a small car that used the motorcycle engine of the Iso Moto 200 and named it Isetta-an Italian diminutive meaning little iso.[10]
The Isetta caused a sensation when it was introduced to the motoring press in Turin in November 1953.[10] It was unlike anything seen before. Small (only 2.29 m (7.5 ft) long by 1.37 m (4.5 ft) wide) and egg-shaped, with bubble-type windows, the entire front end of the car hinged outwards to allow entry. In the event of a crash, the driver and passenger were to exit through the canvas sunroof. The steering wheel and instrument panel swung out with the single door, simplifying access to the single bench seat. The seat provided reasonable comfort for two occupants, and perhaps a small child. Behind the seat was a large parcel shelf with a spare wheel located below. A heater was optional, and ventilation was provided by opening the fabric sunroof.
Power came from a 236 cc (14.4 cu in), 7.1 kW (9.5 hp) split-single two-stroke motorcycle engine.[12] The engine was started by a combination generator-starter known as Dynastart. A manual gearbox provided four forward speeds and reverse. A chain drive connected the gearbox to a solid rear axle with a pair of closely spaced 25 cm (10 in) rear wheels. The first prototypes had one wheel at the rear, but having a single rear wheel made the car prone to roll-overs,[citation needed] so the rear wheel layout was changed to two wheels set 48 cm (19 in) apart from each other. This narrow track eliminated the need for a differential. The front axle was a modified version of a Dubonnet independent front suspension.
The Isetta took over 30 seconds to reach 50 km/h (31 mph) from rest. Top speed was only about 75 km/h (47 mph). The fuel tank held only 13 litres (3.4 US gal; 2.9 imp gal); the Isetta would get somewhere between 5.6 l/100 km; 42 mpg‑US (50 mpg‑imp) and 4.0 l/100 km; 58 mpg‑US (70 mpg‑imp).[citation needed]
In 1954, Iso entered several Isettas in the legendary Mille Miglia where they took the top three spots in the economy classification. Over a distance of 1,600 km (1,000 mi), the drivers achieved an average speed of over 70 km/h (43 mph). However, despite its initial success, the Isetta was beginning to slip in popularity at home, mainly due to renewed competition from Fiat with its 500C model.
Renzo Rivolta wanted to concentrate on his new Iso Rivolta sports car, and was interested in doing licensing deals. Plants in Spain and Belgium were already assembling Isettas and Autocarros using Italian-made Iso components. BMW began talking with Rivolta in mid-1954 and bought not just a license but the complete Isetta body tooling as well. Rivolta also negotiated licensing deals with companies in France and Brazil.

I'm so glad you treated the Isetta with respect. First car I ever drove (I was 12!)..had one in the family for over 20 years. Ours also had a heater lever on top on the choke lever and it had 4 forward gears and reverse ! 300cc engine, three wheeled...wish I still had it ❤

They were fun to drive, back in the early 1960's, when I had mine. My Isetta GB 300cc three-wheeler would do an indicated 62 mph (probably about 58 mph actual) and return around 60 mpg (Imperial). It also kept me warm, comfortable and dry, a vast improvement when compared to almost freezing to death, riding my 250 Jawa motorcycle on my 75-mile-each-way weekly commute, in the depths of an English winter! Being LHD, in thick fog, I could slide the side window and see where the edge of the road was; converesly, overtaking was something of an adventure! They would stay in the traffic-stream too, as most cars were a lot slower, back in the day. The car may have been small, but it was efficient and, as most young blokes at that time couldn't afford any sort of a car, it gave me a distinct advantage with the ladies; and yes, if you're wondering, it was possible in one of them! :))

A friend had one of these little cars in the late 70's.
One day he was trying to push start it on his own, it started, so he ran around to the front to jump in, but he tripped and ran himself over with it!!
    Not hurt, just embarrassed.

The petrol on/off switch comes from the fact that the engine is a scooter engine. You have that same fuel on/off switch on motorcycles, even today. The Isetta had its 50th anniversary in 2005. The little car used to be part of the daily road traffic picture, when I was a young school kid. - Fond memories. :)

As kids, one day we saw an Isetta parked in front of the village shop. With a few friends, we lifted the little car all the way up to the wall, so the door couldn't be opened. Then we waited to see, what the owner would do. The owner came back, looked at the car and at us, watching from a safe distance. He smiled, lifted the back of the car and walked it around, turning the car sideways, got in and drove off, waving at us, as he drove past. - The joke was on us. :D

Nice video, and nice car. I think that you are a bit pessimistic about the top speed. I regularly had more than 60 MPH out of mine. about 1968 I followed an E-type (XKE) Jaguar from London to Bournemouth, obviously he was not trying that hard, but was not hanging about either. I think he was amazed that the Isetta went that fast.
On another occasion, the driver of a Lamborghini Mura stopped and got out to look at the Isetta.
Wish I still had the Isetta. I bought it for £25, sold it after a couple of years for £85.

I actually owned and drove one of these in the early 70s - in Brighton. I got it in a swap for a Rogers Hi-Fi amp. No question, it was the most infuriatingly troublesome car I have ever known (second place was a Brazilian built Beetle with a clutchless manual gearbox - an absolute DOG). These Isettas have some sort of combined generator/starter motor - fantastically useless design. The starter motor constantly burned out. In consequence, after paying for a couple of repairs, I resorted to only parking where there was at least a gentle slope. In one case (outside Adelaide Crescent) I could only start the car by leaving the front door unlatched and the driver's window open, then pushing it to get it rolling after which I ran backwards in front of the car, did a 180, jumped backward into the car, jammed it in gear and bump started it. Unfortunately the gear lever usually jammed in 1st. I then had to stop, declutch, unscrew the gear lever retaining collar, refit the lever, re-screw the collar and drive away. Until next time. On one occasion I crossed Brighton at night carrying a Lambretta scooter tied on the luggage rack, a full grown German Shepherd lying on the back window platform and its owner alongside me. Even slight turns caused one of the front wheels to lift clear of the road. On another I transported a friend's huge Special Plant, also at night, across town with about 3ft emerging from the open sunroof. When I see the price that these things fetch today I feel quite ill.

I owned a 1957 Isetta 300 that I paid $75 for 50 years ago. I think I had it up to 50 mph once. Scary as there is only 3 brakes for the 4 wheels. It wanted to switch ends at that speed. My friends and I would run it around a horse dirt track. We got it air born once. The shift pattern is a backward 4 speed.
