Summertime is an aria written by George Gershwin in 1935 for the opera Porgy and Bess. Authors: DuBoss Hayward and Ira Gershwin (George's brother). Gershwin took the Ukrainian lullaby "Oh, there is a dream by the windows" which he heard in New York performed by the Ukrainian National Choir under the direction of Oleksandr Koshyts as the basis for writing the aria. The music for the poem was written in February 1934, but the full score of the opera was completed 20 months later.
One street performer was singing this song on third street at Santa Monica when I passed by him on December 2011. Finally, after six years I found this piece of art. What a beautiful song.
This is one nice tune I had not heard by this excellent trumpet player. I had heard him only once when he played "lazy river" with Bing Crosby in the All Star Album of 1963. And the singer is excellent too she sings with a very sensuous and full of feeling voice making one feel she really means what she is singing.
Oh my God, will you hear that voice? I don't think there ever was a voice both so sweet and dense/powerful as Ella Fitzgerald's on the industry up to these days. I swear to God, she makes me cry. Solely based on her voice. No sort of music does that to me, ever. I cried.
