I played this guitar at the store and I was impressed by how light, resonant and nice it felt. I went home with a Gibson SG Standard in a beautiful silver color from the new line. That afternoon while playing the SG, I started remembering how good the Les Paul Lite felt. Next day I went back and returned the SG and walked away with the Pink Modern Lite. No regrets.
These remind me of the LTD EC guitars and their thinner bodies. I had been thinking about a LP Studio but these Modern Lites have a lot more about them that I like over the Studio.
I think I would still rather have a Tribute model if I was considering a Budget Les Paul. Its not that much heavier, it costs less and you get the Vintage style tuners and trapezoid inlays. This one just looks cheap.
Play them both back to back. I can tell you because I own both that this new modern lite is way better in many aspects. I really have trouble putting it down most times when I'm playing it.
I have a Les Paul Less + with coil split, a proper flame top and full binding which cost me the same as the Modern Lite, and a 2014 Melody Maker that, apart from P90s, is very similar to the Custom Lite but for half the price. Gibson pricing has gone nuts
@@DylanTalksTone yeah… although i bought both the above mentioned guitars in the last 18 months. Second hand admittedly, but in pristine condition and both better options than a new Modern lite. And there are other brands who are managing to produce high quality guitars for reasonable prices…even PRS. A $1500 entry point to Gibson sounds high. $1500 for an Epiphone is crazy. But its just my opinion. People will ultimately decide through their wallets. I suspect these will be going for a song on the second hand market within 12 months.
I haven't played one but I will check one out. I think it's a nice complement to be in line with a Junior or Special. for $1500 it has humbuckers instead of one P-90 or two making it different. matching paint for the headstock is cool. I like that Gibson is offering more color choices now throughout most of their line. Maybe Gibson can put out a good replacement to the Tribute that is discontinued and will sell out eventually.
Thanks Dylan. If I didn't already have a thin-body Les Paul Less+ from 2015 next to my LP Standard, I would probably buy one of these today. You're right, a thinner body Les Paul is just a completely different beast.
Can you really comment on the QC considering that the guitar you are using is one Gibson is passing around to various reviewers? Can't we assume the previous reviewers of Gibson themselves set it up and checked it out before sending it out?
If I were to buy a Gibson, it would most likely be this one. My major complaints with standard Les Pauls is the weight and the heel joint, and this guitar mitigates both of those issues. Not a big fan of the pastel coloration and inlays, but that's pretty minor
I like it, I just wish the finish had grain filler because I once had a another LP without grain filler and it felt like raw wood to me and it seemed to ding easier than my other LP. The dings didn’t give it character, they just looked like pieces of wood were gouged out in a ugly way. Made me feel that it was a tad too delicate.
If I were going to get a Gibson, this is probably the direction I’d lean in. I’d be interesting to hear your take on neck dive. While I have never had an SG, I have guitars with neck dive. And there ways to deal with it, but it seems strange to say it doesn’t exist.
This Gibson reminds me of the Studio I used to have, which I always felt was one of the better designed models. I have owned 3 Les Pauls, but they haven't stayed because, having been bought used at good deals, the temptation to flip them was too strong.
Great review! Thanks for posting. I think I'm going to try one of these. I never liked the feel of the LP body and the neck joint was too big for my little hands. Price is high, but so are all the other 'entry level' MiA guitars - Fender American Performers and PRS S2 satins are both 13 to 15 hundred USD, up from 999 a few years ago so Gibson is not out of the ballpark, the game just sucks now lol.
Damn: really want one of these but need a Rounded or 50s neck. Seems like a cool take on the LP Special concept, just can’t do the Gibby Slim Taper neck shape.
Just last night, I sadly realized I can no longer play my LP Standard because my back is totally shot. This may be the answer! Going to play one TODAY at Sweetwater…um…yes, living 10 minutes from Sweetwater is VERY expensive in case you’re wondering. 😂
Gorgeous Rose. I really wanted to buy one of these but was disappointed that for a Modern there's no coil splits. It's pricey too at $2000CAD in Canada where the Special Tribute HB is only $1250CAD (these are awesome I got the P90 version in 2021) and the Studio is only $1800CAD. For that money needs splits and maybe a thicker satin finish. The Gibson "gig bag" is awesome and better than a hard shell case, since it won't break headstocks on a small drop that hardshell might easily break.
I really love a lot of what Gibson did with these. The open pore finishes all look so damn good. Feel like these are fancier Specials with Humbuckers, and that isn't a bad thing. Always liked the 498T too.
People like to tell you that you couldn’t possibly play a guitar with 490/498 pickups. I’ve always loved the sound of my ’90 Standard with that set, and I think that one sounds great too.
I picked one up today(12-30-23). Delivered to my door for $1000 brand new. Im changing out the pickguard, knobs, and truss rod cover to white pearloid. The pickups are getting chrome Gibson pickup covers. I was sold at rose gold. Im shallow.
I have a question not really related to the video, how much does it affect the sound just having a volume knob with a humbucker? In stead of having a volume and a tone knob? I was planning on removing the tone knob from my explorer. Love the channel!!
Love the idea of the "Lite" Les Paul as I'm just not into heavy guitars. The deal breaker for me on this one is the lack of the maple top. I would totally consider buying one if they would make that one change.
@@DylanTalksTone is that’s a Gibson rule I’m not aware of? Does a thin maple cap really add that much weight. Gibson actually has made guitars with this thickness in the past (like Melody Makers), so really what I’m asking for basically already exists on the used market.

Nothing changes with the pickups in a different guitar. There’s a video on yt somewhere that a guy made proving it. He rigged up strings between two tables and had a set of pickups underneath the strings with no guitar body involved. Tone is in the fingers and the pickups, not the body.

Turn it up ya blouse! Stick it through an 100w Marshall like you know you must. We don't actually like the "no grain fill" on the wood. We like slick. I hate the finish on it so much.
600$ guitar for 1500$ no thanks
Turn it up ya blouse! Stick it through an 100w Marshall like you know you must. We don't actually like the "no grain fill" on the wood. We like slick. What it means is the guitar will eventually stain and look road worn (or possibly worse), especially with sweat. On the neck we need satin. And we don't like SGs. But that won't stop us buying one (although you can't even get them in Australia at present and they're way, way, way overpriced even after the exchange rate).
Who tf is “we?” Speak for yourself and yourself only, please.
I like the look of these and the sound, but the dot inlays are a deal-breaker for me, it doesn't look right!🫤
