Carburetor work on a 1998 XL760

Free 1998 XL760 jetski starts having some issues. Basics of removing and tearing down the carburetor......but the first restart left us a bit shocked when it ran full throttle and nothing was shutting it down.

The reason why it started running off, was the leakage in the intake. Happened to me once and destroyed the engine. The pistons get hot spots and start dieseling. You should not remove the spark plugs, since you are running a danger of burning a cdi unit. Best way to shut off the engine is to muff the carburator with a rag.

I just bought one of these. Carb issue is what my buddy told me. I'll be tearing into it this weekend. Quick question. I see them using these in the gulf. You think this would be ok on a calm day out in the big water. we are coming to Alabama in May was thinking if I get it running about bringing it.

This one and one a little smaller we used in the Gulf a lot. They did fine. They take some water over the front sometimes on bigger waves. Be sure it’s flushed well after running in salt water. We take ours to a local lake after running in the gulf, then home for a wash. No problems. Good luck with your ski.

I started laughigg by at 11:20, that happened to me once and scared the crap out of me. I finally stopped it by desperately trying to kink the fuel lines

Great work. Welp, my 98 XL760 has been sitting for 13 years. Only 10 hr.s on the rebuilt engine so it's worth getting it going. I'm at the seized-engine part. Just wont turn. That's next up. Nice to hear one running again. Brought back memories. They're fun! Like it better than my 2008 FX Cruiser -a boat with a handle bar.

It ran great for a few more trips, then developed some other issues, so we called it quits on it. We picked up a 95 Yamaha and used a lot from this 98 into it. Been playing at Panama City several times playing, did a 6 hour ride on the intercostal over Memorial weekend. No issue at all.

I just saw this but the different jet size is by design at the factory. Says so in the service manual. :)

Thanks! This one ended up being moved back to a parts ski, several other things went out after this video and we gave up on it, but we are running a 1995 now, so will keep it in mind.

Did you ever get it figured out?? Mine is doing just about the exact same thing, I've done all the steps you showed here. It won't rev past 5k rpm and bogs when I add more throttle. Kind of at a loss.

@@rrhistorian8828 yeah, this problem was due to a clogged pulse line! One carb was getting fuel but only at low rpm.

I think you have your carburetor adjusted wrong bottom screw is the idle jet adjust 1 and 5/8 turns from fully closed your high speed top adjustment should be 3/8 turn from fully closed.

Appreciate it, we did try those settings on one of the tests and it didn't make a difference, but you are probably right. I think that is whats currently on. The electronics box is now out on the ski :(

And you can't be on it and it start to do that it will not do it in the water with the resistance against the impellers

@@EdsEverydayAdventures and whoever put a primer on a two-cylinder is a moron you should never put a primer on a two-cylinder you should not need it there is something else wrong with the jet ski those are only meant for three cylinders

If it had a choke, you are correct. This ski had no choke, had a primer.
