    I’m Swedish, and I can just confirm. Yes we actually do like salty snacks. Most people in Sweden do. I think it’s the same way in the whole of Scandinavia. Salty on the outside and sweet in the middle. Just like the people. :-D

      I'm neither Swedish nor Danish (from India), but I find the salty licorice quite delightful, and shockingly, so does my 4-yr old daughter. I can't say I've found the same appeal for the many double-salt varieties (which double up on the salmiak for that medicinal ammonia smell), but in general, I've been hooked ever since first trying Co-op coins in Helsingør.
      It honestly reminds me of all the salt-cured dried fruits we commonly use in India to whet our appetites.

    ”Salt” is actually ammonium chloride in other terms called salmiak. And not real ocean salt. It is something we scandinavians have enjoyed for a long time.

    • @MathiasWesterlund
      @MathiasWesterlund 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No. On these candies it is actually salt as in ocean or table salt. As in sodium chloride. No ammonium chloride. The salt skum has sodium chloride on the outside and then the inner foam is flavored with salmiak (ammonium chloride) and sugar among other things so on that one you are partially correct.

      Have you tasted pure ammonium chloride? I have. It does taste quite similar to pure sodium chloride, main difference is that it's sharper. It also doesn't have off tastes from other minerals (like sea or rock salt, where they are desired) or iodine (iodized salt) which many regular table salts have. Salmiac in candy form tastes very different from the pure form because its always mixed with sugar, and usually typically licorice root.

    This is just a theory, but I think we swedish people like salty candy and things like that because of our history in food. We used to preserve our food in salt A LOT because of our weather. The swedish weather is sunny about 3 months, and the rest of the year it is either raining or snowing. So we had to preserve the food we could find during the summer, and salt was a good way to preserve the food. Like fish and things like that. The thing with salt in Scandinavia, is that in older times, we mostly only have salt to preserve food for longer times.
    Take fish for example, we stack fish in layers in barrels, with salt between every layer, to preserve fish.
    Other ways to preserve food, was through fermentation, like fermented herring.
    Therefore we are more use to the salty flavour, I'll guess.

    This was hilarious to watch when you tasted the salty candy. It is very special as I know from first hand. Canadian living in Sweden and like the salty candy but in moderate doses.

    The only thing better than a fresh lump of skum is skum coated in salt. You know, like a piece of asphalt that has been rolled around in salt. Wonderful.

      Bc all you guys do is eat salted 🐟 fish, so salt everything else. Portuguese are known for salted cod, even they turned anise into a sweet alcohol.

    The salt is ammonium chloride. We had a jar of it in my house and used to dip stuff innit. Offensive to the tongue if never tried before, but so good once you embrace it. Yummy!
