I escaped the Mormon Church in 1965 at age 18. Although not as bad as the FLDS group, growing up in the 50's in a small Utah town, it was pretty overwhelming. Ceci reminds me of myself. I was also a wild child who did want others telling me what to think or what to do. At age 76 that's still me. Sending love to all those stuck in these cult religions!

Andrew, I heard about the book you are writing about secrets. My parents life was nothing but secrets and lies and I found out at the age of 18 that my birthday was 3 months earlier, they didn’t tell me till 10 years later. Then about a year later I found out I have twin half sisters and have never meet them in person this was about 50 years ago. Also found out my parents were on their second marriage. Secrets always come out and it has effected my life. I feel like my parents lied to me all of my life and I am totally screwed up.
I wish nothing but happiness for this wonderfully strong lady going forward in her life. She deserves every bit of happiness that exists. Shame on anyone who uses religion as a way to control and subjugate and abuse others. I grew up in a very conservative Christian household. I was also rebellious and became a Pagan very early on in my life and that caused many problems. My parents, while not abusive physically most of the time, were very neglectful and psychologically abusive. My mother is narcissist and my dad is her enabler and anything in their life that does not conform to their bubble they ignore and push to the side and don't acknowledge, but doing that to a child is detrimental to that child and it was to me. My life is still majorly impacted by the shit I had to deal with as a child and those issues do last a lifetime in one way or another. To any one out there dealing with this abuse or worse, you are not alone, you can get away and have a life that is within your control and within your dreams. She uses her "Christianity" to feel superior to others and my dad loves her, but he also doesn't want to deal with her wrath. He will enable her behavior in any way possible to not get on her bad side. My parents are a hair shy of being QANNON people, in my opinion. They are extremely right winged and they have very much created a bubble around them that is a bit delusional. You don't have to be part of an orthodox sect of a religion or a cult type of sect of a religion to be just as delusional as the people who are part of those sects. It's a mind set, too. They feel they are right no matter what, even if that means being horrid to even their own children.

You really should look into interviewing Amanda Rae who grew up in a similar group, The Kingston Clan, who were the focus of the television series "Escaping Polygamy." They were also another LDS offshoot when the mainstream church "banned" polygamy. She has her own channel on here. And Dr. Christine Marie would be another great guest to interview, she has a lot to do with FLDS and her own dealings with a so-called prophet.

I’m from the US. I remember when Jeffers went down. If I remember correctly, the younger generation of boys were driven out since girls were given to older men. The LDS community didn’t know what to do with them. The boys hurt as much as the girls. I appall anyone who left that community. I was born into a cult of one and married a cult of one. I left that too. Not as grand as this, but still difficult and painful. To an extent I understand their journey. God bless them all!

I grew up in TCOG/TFI. We also had to call the men uncle and the women auntie. I hated calling the men "uncle" especially. Because a family member would actually care about you. But all I felt was bullied/controlled by most of them. I was very shy around authority figures and would avoid looking at and talking to Uncles and Aunties. I wanted to avoid saying their name or interacting with these entitled so called "parent figures"
What is T CoG sorry I don't know. Is there a brief way we'll never is. As a hour n a half drive away from a newly built FLDS compound I am frightened for whatever might. It seems unoccupied but has walls around etc. This stuff is very real.
I read a book years ago written by a woman who was a multi wife to one man. It was a great read but was very disturbing. I feel for this woman having to leave her children. As a mother I could not imagine ever being apart from my children.

Its not that LDS didnt want to practice their "fundamentalist" values anymore, but laws were put into place that MADE them change. Even then they didnt change, they just branched off.
@@leashade4079I'm not sure what you mean. It started as one entity. After laws got put in place to protect children and so forth......some of them were willing to change, others like the Jeff's family were not. The ones that would not change became the fundamentalist sect.
I came from a very dysfunctional childhood . I was attracted to a very cult like Pentecostal church. I was encouraged to leave my past behind. I stopped calling my mom and stayed away from them. I think about the hurt I caused my family now that I have been out of it since 1989. I went through a lot of soul searching and tested everything I had been taught. I am still a believer. It has been a journey of healing.
From what I've read, the LDS religion gave up polygamy because the the United States withheld statehood unless they change that tenet of the church. They didn't have a "gee, I think we'll embrace monogamy" realization.
Can anyone explain to me how these cults are so prolific in America in particular? How are the religions allowed to and get away with and still form new ones even now? How is it possible that so many cults are still operating in the USA under the guise of religion?
I think it has to do with the Freedom of Religion in the Constitution… I’m in Canada and it’s a bit different here but there are weird groups here too that are just maybe more hidden… but I think American laws are set up in a way that allows this type of stuff to be more common
Women need emotional/affection attention. Actually require it. So the PDA's, which are emotionally charged and on some level satisfying, would absolutely cause jealousy while watching someone else get that emotional attention that you long for. It is insane that this goes on. It is so sad that the people who grow up in these situations don't know any different. I also love the fact that so many seem to know instinctively that it is just not right and Kudos to them for finally seeing a way out!
Me too 😂 but I left after 3 months under a cult leader type boss…. way too much mental exhaustion dealing with that personality type, and there was definitely OCD too
The State invested a lot as well, remember that all of the wives after the first wife were legally unwed mothers with children without named fathers on birth certificates and are entitled to welfare; and, with 10 plus children, those cheques are going to be quite large, and you have 10 women per family picking up these cheques, and you are giving her nothing as she hands the cheques over to the church, that's big money.
I think there was an episode of "Sister Wives" where they visited Navoo, IL. I'm pretty sure that a tour guide said something suggesting that the reason they started polygamy because Smith had an affair & needed a way to rationalize it.
Hi Andrew great interview yet again ❤ just wondering, ive watched tons of your videos on your channel & Shaun Attwoods, my question is all the ones I've seen have all been men being the leaders, are there any with women as the leaders, keep up the good work, love what im finding out, I've never been religious, so really only just finding out about all these religions - cults
But how does polygamy even work? If you have 50% boys and 50% girls, what happens when they grow up? One boy has 3 wives, leaving 2 boys without a wife? Or do they have to find wifes outside of their cult? Do they live as single men? Or leave the cult?
The boys are often thrown out as young teenagers, as they are seen as competition to the men. So there are lots of 16 year old boys in the surrounding areas on their own surviving, often families take them in . The church made so much money from these boys as they were sent out to work in building trades, very young, and all earnings given to the church. Local building companies hire the boys when they leave as by then they have been learning trades for years. Ten year olds on roofs etc!!! Modern day slavery! Utah has very lax child laws, so cults can do what the hell they like. Religion stops mankind from progressing towards real humanity imo
I had no idea these cult people lived in normal suburbs, I thought they live in a secluded commune. Tge longer she talked the more I could see many marriages, my first, my parents, were suffering the same cult like control behaviours and its almosr impossible to leave for fear of unknown or consequences like the children being taken off you.
I would love to talk with you about what it's like being the one left behind. I still don't understand it. l have buried all 3 of my children, (overdose, suicide & miscarriage) My g'daughter is all I have left & I was excommunicated from her. I have no contact with her since June 15, 2015 on the Anniversary of my son's su**de in jail actually June 8th 2014. I have literally lost all of my family & pets & has had to go through all of this alone. It's taking it's toll on me now but in a good way because I just don't know how to be me anymore.
There's a branch if the flds about 1.5 hours from where I live in BC. They have this private town called bountiful. I wonder if that's who runs the re education place she mentions. There's actually another cult even closer, the 12 tribes have a commune just outside town here and a restaurant. The area is called the west kootenays and it's kind of a hot bed of alternative thinkers and therefor a bit of a cult hot bed as well. The 12 tribes are really bad, they're recruitment is very agressive in a very gentle way if that makes sense. Like they're friendly hippies but they constantly are trying to rope in vulnerable people to come back to the farm. Yuck.
It happens with some Hasidic Jewish women too because the men have to study religious law all day… in Toronto there are a few neighborhoods where they live in crappy housing and have huge families 😢 It’s not an easy situation

What people don’t realize is that ALL the Abrahamic religions are cultish to varying degrees. I mean nobody will talk about Islam as the biggest one, but look at the behavioral conditioning tactics (pray 5 times daily at the sound of the horn? On your knees, face in the dirt, SUBMISSION), and look what happens when people try to leave that cult! But coming from American “born again” evangelicalism, I can say American Christians aren’t as violent or severe, but they’re certainly a cult. People I knew for years, even from childhood, shunned me when I started being critical of the religion. They won’t say that they shun, but they give sermons about not spending time with unbelievers who will lead you astray. Anyone who says both Christianity and Islam (and especially their parent religion) are not the blueprints for cults either doesn’t know much about it or has blinders on.
Yip, around the 40+ minute mark the truth is revealed that she personally only has 4 children. I thought she looked too young and fresh for 21 children. Definitely clickbait title.

I grew up in TCOG/TFI. We also had to call the men uncle and the women auntie. I hated calling the men "uncle" especially. Because a family member would actually care about you. But all I felt was bullied/controlled by most of them. I was very shy around authority figures and would avoid looking at and talking to Uncles and Aunties. I wanted to avoid saying their name or interacting with these entitled so called "parent figures"
What is T CoG sorry I don't know. Is there a brief way we'll never is. As a hour n a half drive away from a newly built FLDS compound I am frightened for whatever might. It seems unoccupied but has walls around etc. This stuff is very real.

I read a book years ago written by a woman who was a multi wife to one man. It was a great read but was very disturbing. I feel for this woman having to leave her children. As a mother I could not imagine ever being apart from my children.

Its not that LDS didnt want to practice their "fundamentalist" values anymore, but laws were put into place that MADE them change. Even then they didnt change, they just branched off.

@@leashade4079I'm not sure what you mean. It started as one entity. After laws got put in place to protect children and so forth......some of them were willing to change, others like the Jeff's family were not. The ones that would not change became the fundamentalist sect.
I came from a very dysfunctional childhood . I was attracted to a very cult like Pentecostal church. I was encouraged to leave my past behind. I stopped calling my mom and stayed away from them. I think about the hurt I caused my family now that I have been out of it since 1989.
I went through a lot of soul searching and tested everything I had been taught. I am still a believer. It has been a journey of healing.

From what I've read, the LDS religion gave up polygamy because the the United States withheld statehood unless they change that tenet of the church. They didn't have a "gee, I think we'll embrace monogamy" realization.

Can anyone explain to me how these cults are so prolific in America in particular? How are the religions allowed to and get away with and still form new ones even now? How is it possible that so many cults are still operating in the USA under the guise of religion?
I think it has to do with the Freedom of Religion in the Constitution… I’m in Canada and it’s a bit different here but there are weird groups here too that are just maybe more hidden… but I think American laws are set up in a way that allows this type of stuff to be more common

Women need emotional/affection attention. Actually require it. So the PDA's, which are emotionally charged and on some level satisfying, would absolutely cause jealousy while watching someone else get that emotional attention that you long for. It is insane that this goes on. It is so sad that the people who grow up in these situations don't know any different. I also love the fact that so many seem to know instinctively that it is just not right and Kudos to them for finally seeing a way out!

The State invested a lot as well, remember that all of the wives after the first wife were legally unwed mothers with children without named fathers on birth certificates and are entitled to welfare; and, with 10 plus children, those cheques are going to be quite large, and you have 10 women per family picking up these cheques, and you are giving her nothing as she hands the cheques over to the church, that's big money.

I think there was an episode of "Sister Wives" where they visited Navoo, IL. I'm pretty sure that a tour guide said something suggesting that the reason they started polygamy because Smith had an affair & needed a way to rationalize it.

In Asian communities, calling all older than yourself uncle/auntie is a mark of respect.
But how does polygamy even work? If you have 50% boys and 50% girls, what happens when they grow up?
One boy has 3 wives, leaving 2 boys without a wife? Or do they have to find wifes outside of their cult? Do they live as single men? Or leave the cult?
The boys are often thrown out as young teenagers, as they are seen as competition to the men.
So there are lots of 16 year old boys in the surrounding areas on their own surviving, often families take them in .
The church made so much money from these boys as they were sent out to work in building trades, very young, and all earnings given to the church. Local building companies hire the boys when they leave as by then they have been learning trades for years. Ten year olds on roofs etc!!! Modern day slavery!
Utah has very lax child laws, so cults can do what the hell they like.

I had no idea these cult people lived in normal suburbs, I thought they live in a secluded commune. I would love to talk with you about what it's like being the one left behind. I still don't understand it. l have buried all 3 of my children, (overdose, suicide & miscarriage) My g'daughter is all I have left & I was excommunicated from her. I have no contact with her since June 15, 2015 on the Anniversary of my son's su**de in jail actually June 8th 2014. I have literally lost all of my family & pets & has had to go through all of this alone. It's taking it's toll on me now but in a good way because I just don't know how to be me anymore.

There's a branch if the flds about 1.5 hours from where I live in BC. They have this private town called bountiful. I wonder if that's who runs the re education place she mentions. There's actually another cult even closer, the 12 tribes have a commune just outside town here and a restaurant. The area is called the west kootenays and it's kind of a hot bed of alternative thinkers and therefor a bit of a cult hot bed as well. The 12 tribes are really bad, they're recruitment is very agressive in a very gentle way if that makes sense. Like they're friendly hippies but they constantly are trying to rope in vulnerable people to come back to the farm. Yuck.
One older leader of Bountiful was arrested a few years ago…. I also watched another you tube video about 12 Tribes and they sound messed up

What people don’t realize is that ALL the Abrahamic religions are cultish to varying degrees. I mean nobody will talk about Islam as the biggest one, but look at the behavioral conditioning tactics (pray 5 times daily at the sound of the horn? On your knees, face in the dirt, SUBMISSION), and look what happens when people try to leave that cult! But coming from American “born again” evangelicalism, I can say American Christians aren’t as violent or severe, but they’re certainly a cult. People I knew for years, even from childhood, shunned me when I started being critical of the religion. They won’t say that they shun, but they give sermons about not spending time with unbelievers who will lead you astray. Anyone who says both Christianity and Islam (and especially their parent religion) are not the blueprints for cults either doesn’t know much about it or has blinders on.
