    The GTX 1060 has a limit of 3 session (you can even see this in the Support Matrix link in the description), so did they use a custom firmware? Nvidia sets these limits because they want to sell their quadros and server cards which are mostly unrestricted but cost way more. Afaik you can have a lot more transcode sessions with newer Intel CPUs. So I would not use a dedicated graphics card for Plex transcoding. The newest Intel CPUs with P/E Cores still made some problems last time i checked, but 10* and 11* models with integrated graphics should be fine. It's also way more energy efficient.

If i have around 3 people watching with direct stream, I can have more people watching. It helps that the end user changes a few settings as the default setting is not set to watch the native source resolution. Another option that could help is that if you have tons of spare RAM, you can use RAM for transcoding instead of hardware.

  • @ShaftShambler
    @ShaftShambler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Well somehow that sounds superficial but not pro.
    At the beginning a 180GB video of Alien? What is that, 8K HDR? I'd be really interested to know what that is and where it comes from. 4K HDR UHD Remux certainly isn't.
    And then no word about HDR and tone mapping?
    The i5-9600k with its iGPU certainly does adequate SDR to SDR transcode but certainly not HDR to SDR with tone mapping. It doesn't even manage one stream without caching pauses...
    I don't want to sound too bad but this belongs in the Beginner Week not in the Pro Week.

    • @SocialSpit
      @SocialSpit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I had responded because I was wondering where in blazes you saw that 180 GB 8K alien video. I could not see the files that he was looking at from my iPhone screen I had to open up the video on my PC to be able to see that he was basically loading a theatre level video. I don’t know if he would be able to play that even on his beefed up machine much less transcode it down to 720…
      Anyway I had included a link to a program that can download 8K videos but apparently TH-cam does not allow that kind of link. I did not even know that a person could obtain a video of that high quality.
      I came in here to edit my comment and they had deleted it. Phfhphfh.
      I came in here looking for some kind of help with my server but it doesn’t look like help is forthcoming unless I fork out for whatever video card Linus is Hocking…
      I doubt if it would help me though because my machine is a very old Optiplex 980, Clarkdale i5. Basically rescued from a business trashcan, it used to run fairly well but now I can barely play video on my Quicken app… even with a GTX 750 TI.

      @@SocialSpit might want look up the compatibility list on the 750ti. I recently learned that the 700 series cards have some pretty nasty limitations when it comes to transcoding due to age of the tech. Not sure if it applies to the 750ti but it definitely applied to the 780ti I had.
      Might be worth picking up a T400 just for the generation jump. I used a decommissioned Tyan server and it works great as a media server - tossed in the T400 and it transcodes 4K to mobile without any buffering.

    • @MyPhone-hb3vz
      @MyPhone-hb3vz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that caught my attention was that file size. The 4K remux I have eyes on is about 1/4 that size.
      It's probably fake. The date created for the file is 9/12/2022 and the video was published 9/19/2022... It went through a round of editing so we can assume that file was made strictly for this video.
      Plus, what a shitty example for transcoding because Plex cannot handle 4K transcoding well at all no matter what the bitrate is. If this file was real, it'd have to be 8k which makes it an even worse candidate for an example of transcoding.

      The web optimization does the trick, cause this option allows to part time download for the file to stream instead of downloading the whole buffer size. So the streaming order priority is in the first place your internet connection speed AND your HDD speed and and then your cpu.

      If you already have an MP4 that's not web-optimized, you can use ffmpeg to quickly optimize it. Takes less than a minute since all it's doing is moving some data to the beginning of the file. The command is "ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -movflags faststart -acodec copy -vcodec copy result.mp4"

      @@rixatestarossa521 I use x265 these days for all my blu-ray rips. Pretty much all my hardware clients like the Apple TV natively now decode x265 in hardware and I can confirm during playback it's doing a simple Directplay. This lets me continue to rely on my ancient 2012 built AMD Plex server to stream out even 4k content since it's just spitting out compressed data to the clients (simple data transfer) and x265 lets me store most of those 4k films in only a few GBs of storage on that server so it's even less intense on that old hardware than the older/larger x264 files since it's only doing the storage and basic transmission (not decoding, hardware nor software).

    Can I set up a separate Plex server as a redundant fail over system? for such reasons as maintenance on the primary Plex server?

      a little late to the discussion, but Plex does not support High Availability. When you shut down the server, it is shut down.

    Is there a way for me to disable transcoding altogether? My Plex server is running on one of these tiny i3 Lenovo ThinkCentre computers. The machine is underpowered, but I have massive upload bandwidth and I doubt I'd ever need to transcode anything when viewing on my TV or from one of my "controlled" remote locations. Can transcoding be disabled?
