Kinda sad that not a lot of people are talking about Roger Craig Smith’s performance as Kale. Korsica def stole the show, but Kale gives me Prince Charming (Shrek) vibes and I ended up loving his character more that I imagined.
I think her appeal comes from how multifaceted she is as a character. She's strong and vulnerable, prideful and humble, serious and silly, pragmatic and idealistic, zealous and reasonable, loyal and rebellious, determined and doubtful, cool and hotheaded, cunning and reckless, tough and tender. She's a beautifully real and flawed hero in a sci-fi fantasy, just like Chai.
3:35 When I first played this I thought Kale was lying to try and convince Korsica, but no he actually never planned to make an army of mindless soldiers.
I love the reveal, because it makes so much sense for that to have been where they were going- every robot, except the older models and those ones in jumpsuits were weaponized, yet the museum shows they were marketed for civilian use. If world conquest was the plan, having armed robots secretly waiting for their orders would make sense, and all the self destructive choices the executives made, ones that would certainly ruin the company in time, would make sense in the context of them just planning on brainwashing everyone and ruling the world. Instead Kale is just a terrible buisnessman but a great engineer, on top of being morally bankrupt, so he surrounds himself with as many people willing to go along with that buisness model as possible, employ robots that they can replace instead of humans that would die or quit, and spend money like water because they are just going to MAKE people buy their products. Though to be fair since Kale was complaining from the beginning that the armstrong candidates were losers, what he really wanted to do was brainwash celebrities for free endorsements or something like that. Really the whole thing is a great throughline of the flaws of the villains, the are all very competant, but not at the real skills that their positions require, or they let their own desires lead them to make decisions that are bad for the company. Rekka destroys flawed products with a flashy expensive robot instead of doing actual Q&A to improve production (ie her sucess record is in terms of how no defects were undestroyed rather than in any level of quality in the production process). Zanzo is a good inventor with many ideas, but micromanages things and wastes money on whims rather then let his department do actual research and development, Mimosa can work a crowd and spin doctor well, but once again wastes company funds on personal perks and her idea of a party for the armstrong project is a concert where she is the star- basically playing at being a pop star on the company dime. Roquefort just enables all of Kale's decisions, for once out of personal loyalty, but still he is not doing his job as head of finance and managing the rediculous spending the rest are doing, except the one time it becomes Zanzo's downfall. Kale turning out to be using tech that any actual supervillain would use to conquer the world to improve his buisness is just him setting the bar for the rest of them.
