- This review is on the Patek Philippe 5980 in steel. This model has been a long time favorite of mine. Definitely a heavy hitter!

Thank you for tuning in this is Watch Eric. Todays video is going to be on the apex predator of the stainless steel watch game, the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980. Everyone knows that I am a fan of the Nautilus, especially the 5980. The thing about the chrono is that it offers a bit more size than the other models like the 5712 or the 5711. The 5980 has a thicker case and sits higher off the wrist making that watch look a bit bigger. To me the Nautilus has the perfect case size over any other watch, not too big and not too small. I have never heard a complain that a 5711 or even a 5980 is too big for them. The Patek 5980 for me has always been an apex predator in the stainless steel watch game. This was way before this rise in prices that we have seen the last 3-4 years when prices rose dramatically from $38,000 up to $100,000. Keep in mind that when this watch was at $38,000 the Rolex Daytona also used to cost $10,000. It’s like if they all rose up at the same time in value. Even back when they were $38,000 people were still hesitant to pay that much for a chrono in stainless steel. For me it’s one of my favorite chronographs, you cannot go wrong with that single dial register with two needles that it has at the 6 o’clock position on the dial. It just balances out the dial and gives the 5980 it’s unique look. This Patek comes in three dial colors white, black, and blue. The white dial was just recently discontinued and they have risen in price. I am still not buying into the hype because the white has always been the least favorite of the three.
One of the best things about the Patek Philippe 5980 is how understated it is. I once wore one to a happy hour and it almost felt that no one noticed it on my wrist. I could have had a Rolex Skydweller on in rose gold and it would made a definite statement right as I entered the place. My buddy that I was meeting up with didn’t even notice until about 15 minutes after I arrived that I was wearing a 5980. That’s how understated it is and that’s what I like about it. I have a saying about this model and it’s that the 5980 is the millionaires Rolex Daytona. For me it’s like a silent weapon in the watch game. I had owned one back when they were in the mid 40’s and I wish I would have held on to it. Not so much because of the rise in price and the chance to turn a profit, but more because it’s a great watch and it’s definitely a watch to have.
A couple features that I want go point out about the Nautilus 5980 is that this watch has the most comfortable bracelet in the watch game. It wears so smooth that you can forget it’s even there. It does not pull hairs on your arm and has no sharp edges. Another thing that I want to point out about the Nautilus is that although it has a sort of aquatic theme name, the watch is not for the water. If you would see how this top glass is placed on the bezel it would freak you out. This watch is not to go boating, but is better suited to go cruise on a yacht. Overall I find the 5980 very versatile. You can wear it with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt or a suit. It always looks good.
Let’s talk about the prices. This Nautilus has seen some crazy increase in prices the last 4 years and most of it has probably been due to the fact that many have been bust down with diamonds. Combine that with the recent popularity and the fact that Patek Philippe simply does not produce a whole lot of them causes the perfect storm. Last year I saw a few go for $100,000, but in today’s market you can expect to pay within the low $80,000’s.
As far as the watch game goes it’s definitely a heavy piece. Even if you wanted to buy one today it’s not like there are many to even choose from and that’s whats always made it a heavy hitter in the watch game. Anyone that thought this watch was too much money when it was $40,000 must feel the slap in the face when they see you with one and know how much they cost now.

The 5980 ever came down to($50K) in platinum (I know in South Lulu-ville in La la land) I might start dreaming. For now I’ll just stick to my $11K target of a dream watch.👀🙃

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980 is a beautiful watch. Gerald Genta Patek Philippe Nautilus design is more sophisticated than is Audemars Piguet Royal Oak design with screws. I agree with you Eric I like the size of the 5980, they are more macho than the flat Nautilus model. Because of its scarcity, I think only a rich person can afford a Patek Philippe Nautilus now.
What are your thoughts on the 5990 I always thought that nautilus was beautiful haven’t seen it covered that much though
You're absolutely right in saying that Patek Nautilus was not desirable in the old days. I like watches and do have quite a few pieces but wouldn't say I'm a collector. I could have my chance of picking one up 20 years ago when they could not give it away but I just didn't like the look. I did bought a couple of AP royal oak instead. Because of the limited supply, same as Rolex Daytona, the prices went crazy.

Great Job as always, Eric. As for the 5980! Prices are being sustained by a small group of celebs, rappers and nouveau riche scammers. I know quite a few wealthy Patek owners/collectors and they absolutely refuse to pay that much for a 5980 out of sheer principal. The only reason someone would isn't because its such a great watch, it would be merely get satisfaction from momentarily impressing someone else. Once the novelty wears off, they realize its not worth it. The only people that would exhibit such impulsive buying habits goes back to what I said, nouveau riche scammers or young celebs. No one who has worked hard to build their wealth would be dumb enough to spend that on a 5980.

Another great video Eric. After all you said about the Nautilus not being that suitable for the water. I would have loved you at the end of the video to casually turn around and dive into the water (sunglasses and all) and swim across to that grass on the other side. Just to freak people out.
