  • David Cawston was accused of being involved in an armed robbery in 1989. He and the other robbers worked as bouncers for Tony Tucker one of the 3 men murdered at Rettendon in the Range Rover in 1995. Cawston believes Tucker informed the police about the robbery which led to his arrest and conviction so always held a grudge. Whilst making the current Sky documentary two ex detectives read about the robbery and linked it ...without any credible evidence to the murders. For the past 3 years Cawston has sadly suffered with health issues brought on by stress. He spent 2 years and 8 months in a secure unit after staging an armed seige at his home in Norwich. (goog;le) When he saw a you tube video in which one of the ex detectives discussied the murders and the robbery, he was horrified to learn that he had been accused of being involved. (His conviction was quashed on appeal after 3 years in custody which contributed to his poor mental health) He contacted the ex detectives, spoke briefly to them on the telephone and then agreed to be filmed for the Sky documentary. His story was not checked and according to Cawston, he was not given time to tell the background to his story regarding mental health issues he had etc...as the interviewers `fled` straight after asking just a few questions. Hi Gordy, iv always thought Steel n Whomes done it but you've got to agree the Jasper story sounds plausible. I don't think we'll ever know 100% who pulled the trigger and how it went down. The thing is over the last 20 plus years a he'll of a lot of people Bernie included said Steel and Whomes where innocent, but then there story changes for whatever reason. You know what they say you can't trust a word a criminal says..There's no friends or loyalty when criminals and drugs are involved..

Agreed! I read all the evidence on Bernies site, all the appeals they put up etc. Their excuses for the mobile phone pings was really weak and blatant lies. Mickey Steele was a regular customer at the place of work in Essex early to mid 90s. I worked at a Towbar and Trailer Centre in the same town that Nicholls lived in. Mickey used to buy parts to build the boat trailer for his smuggling boat (he coulda bought a ready made version from us but clearly LOVED engineering and building his own with parts we sold him) sometimes paying cash, others all official receipts made out to MJS Engineering his firm. One of my friends mother was dating the bent CID cop Wolfgang Bird involved with Darren Nichols (they were selling items the Bird stole from Police evidence room) I even knew it would be Wolfgang Bird long before he was named in any book or report about the crimes (I think his name was hidden as the corruption case against him hadn't been to court yet?) All kinda exciting at the time and years after hearing the truth behind numerous things that happened over the years.

@davekennedy6315 yeah right steele and wholmes never murdered no one, the phone pings were examined by the number 1 uk phone specialist with wholmes phone from the lane and not once did it ping on the mast in the report the police said it connected to, it went to the other mast but when done from the pub car park it pinged the correct mast, also the 3 wernt dead at 7pm police hid the phone calls after that time and there's loads of sightings of them. theres so much evidence showing its not right and if nichols was so scaeed of steele and wholmes doing a triple murder for there first murder which I highly doubt it, how many people would do a triple murder for the first murder without and previous convictions for violence then why was nichols still chilling with steele, then you look at Craig's brother saying he see rolfe with 2 keys of coke that day and he rung the police to inform them and they said we know we're following them now and rememer sightings of the white Sierra and the range going into the farm to turn around that was defo the police chasing them by why wernt they arrested, also he mentions the 4th guy with them was a black fellow from east London, I do believe micky bowman and paul edwards were involved though, but tucker was defo the target alot of higher up gangsters say that and people get this idea pat and tucker were close they wernt, tate sent steele to get his money from tucker as he didn't trust him then you add on top of that the guy who owned the garage who sold a car for tate, tate told him not to give the money to tucker, even though tucker came in and asked for it. I still think either pat wasn't supposed to be there or he was setting up tucker and rolfe but got double crossed

@thetruth5791 yeah, way, WAY too much evidence against them. Even their appeals were TERRIBLE and had ZERO chance of success (unless the judge was a complete moron?) They tried several things over the years but they were always very, VERY weak and deeply flawed and easily disproven. Steele always seemed a decent geeza, very polite and respectful. I'd guess that he was PROPER Old School, unlike the Essex Boys that were just nasty bullies throwing their weight all around Essex without a care or single thought spared to the possible consequences of that kinda behaviour. The end was truly inevitable!
