I used to have a 400/4 when I was 17! Fantastic little bike. Loved it.
Edit. Just remembered this from years ago.
The brake lever loop on the little Honda. My flares got caught on it when I was doing a u turn. Over balanced and down I went. Mates were watching and just rolled up as I lay there in the road!!

My 400/4 was my favorite bike in my 20's - bought from a co-worker, and kept to going for 5-6 years. Such a great bike from that era. Just a great, high reving, lightweight bike with Honda DNA. Got stuck once with my future wife. Found a fuse blown, wrapped ut in foil from a pack of Marlboro's. My wife-to-be said that one Mcguyver moment convinced her I could take handle the unexpected.

I have been lusting after one of these since I was a teenager, sadly here in Australia they are worth a small fortune now if you can find one

Was it missing the gasket on the clutch cover? That would explain the binding. No axial clearance... Looking forward to the next parts. Thanks for sharing.

@@SuperbikeSurgeryTV I had a CB 350, 500 & 750 but never one of these. In Australia they were considered a girl's Honda 4. I'm not joking. Plus they looked awful.

Good little bikes to work on, have done my fair share of these. A few notes i made while watching the Vid. I pull back the metal collar between the airbox and air filter chamber and remove the airbox first much less hassle, carbs then airbox on reassembly. the centre stand main pin is in the wrong way round, i know it is easier to remove the stand with the pipes on but it goes in from the right, while i am at it the stand pinch bolts are up side down they go in from the top and nuts on bottom, presume the breather pipe guides are still there but cannot see them in the video. Horn if fitted on the wrong side, it goes on the right with the little bent rod with the throttle and clutch cable going through. I always back off the tappets fully before i remove the cam cover (it is in the manual). Punch mark the brake lever if there is not one already to aid refitting. As another one has suggested was there a clutch cover gasket fitted??? in my experience the only cure for weeping head gaskets is a little 3-bond on a genuine head gasket. even the latter builds with the longer head studs still could weep, a Honda mech told me this in the later 70's while the top is off make sure the cam chain tensioner is working if not it is easy to make it into a manual one with the aid of a suitably modded bolt instead of the cap in the top crankcase. Cerakote is a good option for the rocker and breather cover, same for clutch cover, it is Honda cloud silver colour from memory. depending on the miles and treatment, rings and cam chain will be first to ware out. valve guides are ok, remember there are no valve stem seals on the exh. I would not be surprised if someone in the past has "lapped" the valves in and buggered the seats, these and most Honda's of this generation had very soft valves and would recess causing loss of compression, a good valve job and SS valves will bring it up to new. Also did you try setting ht e tappets a bit wide and redoing the comp tests, a little bit more valve clearance works wonders on old Honda's oddly enough the goldwing does not have any of the soft valve problems. you will find the CBX is prob the worst for this valve recession. hope you don't mind my 2p worth i love these little bikes and get a bit anal about some of little details.

Ha ha , I remember rebuilding one of these in 1979 , did everything perfect including the uprated valve springs .
Everything back together took it a 50 mile running in ride to Knochill racing track where you could get weekday morning or afternoon noon access for a 50p ticket from old Mrs Butcher . Spent 2 hours setting up everything and rode back thinking it was a disaster and how was my customer going to feel riding her oil tight , but gutless underpowered bike.
    I shouldn't have worried.
Turns out it was even better than when she bought it new 😂😂😂 .
Must have been the head skim upping the comp ratio . 🎉
