      I did this journey quite some time ago (must be about 12, 13 years ago now) and found the 170 very comfortable indeed. I had no problems with legroom and I am tall - and this seating looks unchanged from when I went. Would be miffed if I bought first class and there were no such seats, but I was far too poor for that back then. I don't know why but a lot of railway fans seem to hate turbostars, when I can only praise them for being a significant cut above, certainly better than a 158.

      @ianmcclavin 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At least the 170's still have reasonably comfortable seats, the replacement seats ScotRail installed on the 156's on the West Highland Line are terrible, especially for a long run like Glasgow to Fort William or Mallaig.

    You pointed out every reason i refuse to travel on scotrail. They are the worst train company iv ever used. The trains are constantly overcrowded, anti-social behaviour is worse than a bar on a friday night and the staff do nothing to stop it, the legroom is next to none, the toilets are disgusting and half the time theres no loo roll, the seats and floor are almost always dirty or sticky and the tickets are massively overpriced. I can't remember the last time i used the train. If i want to travel between inverness and the south i always use the megabus. much cleaner, quieter and cheaper.

  • @anthonyholroyd5359
    @anthonyholroyd5359 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Funnily enough ScotRail themselves agree with alot of the points you raised.
    The reason seating reservations weren't available on your train is because ScotRail where, throughout 2019 and early 2020, phasing out 170s on their long distance intercity routes in favour of the longer, more comfortable and more 'intercity' suitable HST sets.
    The HSTs have a different seating layout to the 170s, and ScotRail hadnt yet recieved enough HSTs to replace 170s on every service so the reservations often didn't match the seating layout as you could end up with either type of train. Consequently seating reservations where just cancelled until enough HSTs where in servicr that you could be fairly confident an intercity train would be an HST.

    I've travelled this route by 170 and HST and I have to say that to enjoy the scenery the 170 is the better train. I am over 6ft tall and find the legroom more than adequate, certainly way ahead of the 158s. I think that the 170s do a good job in Scotland. The seats are well shaped and comfortable, far better than Voyagers and the like. My only criticism is that demand outstrips supply on this route. One 3 car set is often inadequate. The last time I travelled down from Inverness on one several cyclists were denied travel after Aviemore. But will we see the converted 155s here? Probably not if HSTs become the norm.

    • @nickedwards2904
      @nickedwards2904 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i really cant believe that anyone would think a 170 was better then the HST. The HST has never been surpassed in terms of comfort in this country and to think a plastic box with a vibrating floor is better is somewhat strange. I would not travel on that thing for a 3 hr journey and would make sure it was a HST set

      One 3 car set is totally inadequate for a lot of the northern Turbostar routes, to be honest. On one day trip from Perth-Edinburgh and back I had an awesome I7C HST on the morning trip down, very busy but still enough seats for all, and on the way back from Edinburgh Gateway (This was in Feb mind you when there was probably plague going around) I was nose to nose with a whole lot of people in the vestibule of a 170 as far as Inverkeithing before getting the vestibule jumpseat. They're awful in terms of capacity.As on my local lines in Rhoose/Barry, it's just not right for late joining passengers to be treated as second class by being crammed in like Japanese metros or refused travel. What did they do wrong?

I’ll take a Turbostar every time compared to the class 158 express sprinters they also use which have even less legroom and whose seats are an instrument of torture. Incidentally they have a mix of Turbostars, some have had the first class removed. Ironically on the local Fife services with no first class we often get the first class equipped units.

    I've done a jourrney from Edinburgh to Blair Atholl with the same type of stock around a few years ago. It personally wasn't too bad, i was in a large group and we had reserved seats for the journey. When we got on the train there was apparently no reserved seats whatsoever and it was just a nightmare and the train was also only three carriages long.
    It was even worse around 6 days later when we went to do the return journey back to Edinburgh. We had to take a coach to Perth because there were some unexpected delays (due to some event going on). Of course we were lucky enough to get seats onboard the train as it was much longer!
    But overall it wasn't a great experience to say the least.

    I've been on Turbostars many times to and from Aberdeen. The oldest seats on a turbostar had a leather bit for your head. The tables are better for comfort on a turbostar, as I was on a couple of years ago travelling from Inverurie to Inverness. Since Abellio took over, no trains have reserved seating.

    I loathe airline style seats. It's bad enough having to endure them on planes, which, thankfully doesn''t happen so often, but trains have no excuse. When you can remember well padded seats in the compartments with a side corridor the current squalid set up is just NOT GOOD ENOUGH

    A fair report. As for selling 1st class tickets when no first class seating is available, I’ve experienced this myself on a few occasions. It is unacceptable but the operating company (Abellio) doesn’t seem to care. When they were chosen to replace First to run ScotRail, the SNP Government trumpeted the lower costs & promised better service. The reality is that it may be cheaper but it’s far too often shoddy. My usual route is Nairn/Inverness/Perth/Broughty Ferry & reverse, used to require 2 changes until Abellio changed it a year so ago, now three changes. The equipment can sometimes be quite good, other times abysmal. That’s why I quite often drive when it’s not the depth of winter 😉. PS/ Quite often recently (6 or so months pre-lockdown) there was no trolley service at all on the lengthy Inverness/Perth/Glasgow sections, although as mentioned earlier I generally get off at Perth, staff shortages it was said, but it seemed almost as if trolley service was off regularly.

    • @DylansTravelReports
      @DylansTravelReports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, similar issues with the trolley service on the far north line. I take that route quite often and they wheel out the staff shortages excuse. Fortunately, if you board at Inverness, the guard will come round and make people aware so that you can quickly nip to WH Smith before setting off.

    I have to say that anti-social behaviour is quite common these days, especially with the young. Many seem to have no social graces or respect for others about them. If it is not a 'Quiet Coach' then I don't think it is the train staff's job to sort out what years of parenting and schooling has not!
    The train staff doubtless have enough cr*p to put up with on a daily basis as it is, without going looking for a fight which these incidents can easily escalate into...... If the other passengers won't get together and stand up and let them know their behaviour is not acceptable then i'm afraid you just have to put up with it, as most people do (as annoying as that is ... ) I have experienced it myself so many times on trains from London to Peterborough, but getting into a heated bust up with people these days is just not worth the hassle.
    I just add it to the list of many things that hack me off about train travel, top of the list which is people jumping on late night trains despite not having a ticket because they know there will be no inspectors on the train, and open passenger barriers at the station they get off at.

    • @Foxstar1387
      @Foxstar1387 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Years ago I was on a " Quiet coach " with Virgin trains. heading to Stoke. Was minding my own business when 3 Stuffed suites decided to have a loud conversation while smashing the hell out of the keys on the oversized laptops. so I put on my headphones to listen to some music while killing the time and they bitched about me to the attendant. It wasnt even loud or thrash just the mid range pop rock and soft club. sat at around 75% vol.
      Not been on any scottrail services as im in GTR Manchester. Northern are ok if you dont mind the shoddy service and Diesel donkeys. Ive noticed that unless its a " premium " brand the staff just dont give a damn.

    I think the defining factor about the shoddy trains is because Scotrail and Network Rail just assume there's no use in electrifying the lines north of Edinburgh, as it's so sparsely populated this far north. And really, they're shooting themselves and us in the foot, as the tourists coming to see Loch Ness have to fly into an airport (with minimal European links) then take a half hour or so bus ride into Inverness. But getting electrified lines between Here, Aberdeen and/or Glasgow would drastically improve conditions and speed things up tenfold

    • @DylansTravelReports
      @DylansTravelReports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The worst part about the airport buses is that the timetable often doesn't coincide with the arrival time of flights.

    You're probably too young to remember this, Dylan, but from 1988 to 2001, most internal Scottish services were operated by 2-car class 156 or 158 sprinter units. It took quite a while before they had enough stock for 4-car trains, even on the Edinburgh - Falkirk High - Glasgow Queen Street services; and by the time the occasional 4-car unit made it to Aberdeen and Inverness, it wasn't necessarily on what were known to be the busier services! So, it was and still could be a lot worse in terms of discomfort and overcrowding - believe me, when the class 170 turbos came into use they felt quite luxurious by comparison! Admittedly, they've been feeling decidedly tired for a long while now; largely due to overuse. That's the down side of fixed formation trains. I've yet to go anywhere on a ScotRail HST set, but somehow don't feel that even they'll be as comfortable as the Class 26/7 and later, class 47 loco-hauled Mk 2 rakes of anything up to 11 vehicles that used to run between Glasgow/Edinburgh and Inverness - albeit only about 7 times a day at irregular intervals - supplemented by the Sleeper service from the two cities to and from the north - the portions of which would unite or divide at Perth - where the entire consist would sit for around two and a half hours amidst the banging and rattling of mail, parcels and newspapers being loaded/unloaded, and ferried around the station in their own little trains of BRUTE trolleys; before eventually departing and calling at the almost pitch dark platforms of some of the smaller stations that at best, were illuminated by only one or two 150w bulbs located where the ice tended to be at its blackest, and most unexpected.... Okay - the turbos don't have all that romance, either!!

    Leaving from Glasgow returns are much cheaper if you book 9 weeks in advance. Also if you get returns Glasgow to Perth then Perth to Inverness it’s over £10 cheaper can’t remember exactly. A rail worker whose from Inverness told me a few years back there’s a £5 ticket but only a few and she got one for a relative. The bus takes exactly the same time as the train around 3 hours 15 minutes and it’s possible if booked in advance to get a £1 bus ticket.

    I'd like to see Dylan do a review of what is actually one of my local main lines, of the c2c line from Shoeburyness to London Fenchurch Street, it will be interesting to see seen as they operate almost entirely Class 357's, which are very similar to the 170's in design but more modern and updated (I believe, it's been a good few months since I last travelled with them). They also operate some services with Class 387's, so it will be interesting to see this line in action, particularly as I know it so well!

    The worst train trips are Amtrak from Portland to Seattle when there's a Mariner's game happening. People bring their own alcohol (illegal, but impossible to enforce) and get very very drunk. The last time I rode coach before a baseball game, there were drunk guys who didn't even bother to close the bathroom door before they started peeing. So now when I'm in business class and I hear the announcement, "We will not be serving any more alcohol", I am *extremely* happy I'm not back there, especially when the train arrives in Seattle and I see people staggering to Safeco Field (now T-Mobile Field). Ugh!

With any service I travel on, I try to sit at a table, and the table seats on the 170 are pretty good. I did travel a bit on a few ScotRail 170's back in March though, before lockdown started, a Stirling - Glasgow service on the Monday evening and a bit on the Friday around the Edinburgh to Dundee route, and I didn't think they were as bad as the video made them out to be

Shame about the loud passengers, I would've written a complaint to the train operating company but at least the music suits the setting. I do wonder why train companies use trains which are inadequate for there service runs. I mean they already use 4/5 car Voyagers between Aberdeen and Penzance which is even worse however for a 3 hour service from Inverness to Glasgow they definitely should be using a train more suitable like a class 158 or an HST.
