Never going to happen. They are built by different manufactures and even though the physical couplings are the same (so that actually can couple in an emergency), the electrical connections are totally different, and even if they weren't the computers couldn't talk to each other (it's literally like one speaks German and one speaks Japanese). As said they can couple in an emergency, but that requires the electrical connection boxes to be pulled back out the way so they won't connect, with only the physical connection and air connection made, allowing a dead unit to be pushed or pulled clear of the line. Also the gangways are too different to allow them to be used whilst coupled. Even the 172s have that issue. They can work in multiple with sprinters since they have the same coupling and same electrical connections, but the gangways have to be locked since they aren't compatible.
I don't know if they will work together, they might have the same coupling equipment but the electrical systems are probably a lot different. It is like how the 158s and 165s also have the same but are unable to work properly, though I believe the 170s can work with Sprinters so at least they are compatible (probably why Northern hasn't got any 165/166s).
156’s can couple to 158’s. However driving from the 158 you take into account the maximum speed of the 156. 153’s and 158’s can also couple, along with 170’s. However with ScotRail not in service
I know goys that trains can couple to get her list class 150,153,155,156,158,159,170,171 aswell as 165,166,168,170,171 as well as 313,314,315,317,318,319,320,321,322 because of same coupler times even class 375 376 377 378 379 387

The class 380 and 385 have the exact same top speed, and the 380 is better in scottish conditions. The 385 suffers wheelslip pretty often

380’s and 385’s can not couple in service, unless in rescue. The 385 or whatever set is trailing will not be under power.
