    I really like mine. It's the only vest I use because it has the most space accessible while running (i.e., without having to take it off). The two side pockets below the flask pockets are prime real estate because they are very easy to access. The side zip pockets are tricky, but with practice, may be accessed on the run as well. I feel like the tiny "lapel" zip pocket keeps my car keys safe. The vest is very comfortable and feels good even if I only hook one or none of the elastic closure straps in the front. I find the huge central back pocket is nice for a bladder, or as you said big storage for more clothes, but I am unable to access it on the run. Back side pockets are where I store extra food. I can pat them to check my status, but I need to stop to access them. Yeah, its pricey, but in this case, it's the only one I use, I use it all the time, I can wash it, so ultimately it is a good value.

    The shoulder mesh pockets you mentioned are to hold down the straws you can attach to your flasks to stop them bouncing around and smacking you in the face, you slide them in and out as you need them.. I have discovered this first hand 😂🙈

    Great video, thanks! My clips broke on either side of the main pouch, happy to hear I'm not the only one that experienced that. The elastic strings on the side of the vest causes discomfort and I need to readjust them often. There seem to be a couple of extra loops that I can't figure out what they are meant for, would be great if Salomon put out a comprehensive video of all the features. I carry an additional zip lock pouch which I reuse for my empty gel packets, it prevents the trash pouch form getting sticky. I inflate my empty soft flasks which keep them firm and stop them from falling into the pockets, I find them easier to manage when inflated. Keep up the good work!

    the toggel were both broken on mine. i took it back to the shop and they had a bunch of the 2 hole toggles that the front straps use to replace them and they work perfect. Solomon sent the shop the parts.

    I purchased the ebony colour and received it today - first thing I checked were the toggles on the back of the vest as I’ve seen on many reviews that they break easily, Salomon must have made a change to the design with the pinch toggles similar to those used on previous Salomon packs.

      It’s so confusing now because they seem to resorted to the original style toggles. I have just purchased another one in clematis blue manufactured in October 2020! I guess time will tell on how durable the toggles are now. Nonetheless it’s a brilliant pack and looking forward to using it.

    I had this for almost a year now, been using it for my weekly run. You were right about what this vest can carry, it is a lot. I was looking around for my small tripod everywhere not knowing it was in the side pocket the whole time!
    At one time I forgot to tighten the back strings, found out that the stretchy string was rubbing the loop hole until its almost cut the loop hole and the string.
    And you're right about the back ventilation, not so good in my area with an average 80% humidity every day.
    This vest is my first running vest and I'm really happy with it.

      I would suggest taking a look at Evadict 15L. It has a little bit more volume while still staying around 300g which also comes with a 2L hydro bladder. It also has a backside with strechable material which gives a volume actually more than 15L

    I got this vest a couple of weeks ago. I think they made some improvements on it. Instead of the fixed pouch for the water bubble in the back you can now take that one out. I’ve only just now looked at the toggles because you were talking about them. They seem to be fine. Btw I bought this as a replacement for the Skin 8. One and half years into regular use I had broken the front zipper on my Skin 8. No problem with Salomon, I didn’t have to send the Skin 8 back whilst I received a voucher for the price of a new one. Still convinced like you about the qualities about Salomon vests I went for the bigger vest this time.

    Good review, thanks. I've just bought one of these (haven't used it yet) and am doing a bit more research before I decide whether or not to keep it. (I'm also weighing up whether I want M or L - I'm on the cusp between the two according to Salomon's sizing guide. The large seems more comfortable when I try it on - haven't run in it yet - but I have to cinch it slightly tigher at the front than the 8cm gap recommended by Salomon).
    Re the breathability and the black colour absorbing sunlight - a great tip I saw elsewhere was to freeze a soft ice pack and put that in the water reservoir pouch, so it's nice and cold against your back. Worth a try!

    This video is 1.5 years old but still a great review! I use the ADV Skin 12 and love it! Owned it for at least 1 year, maybe 2 now, and haven't had a single issue. That said, I haven't tried to adjust the back straps that were known to break (Salomon did eventually "update" the pack and they no longer have that issue). I love the Skin 12 because I can use it comfortably when it's fully loaded and when it has nothing but a couple soft flask-waters up front. I also like all of the pocket options. I do wish it had dedicated pole straps rather than stretchy bunchy cords, but that's my only complaint.

      I actually own both the 5 and 12 liter. I love the 5 liter but it doesnt comfortably hold the same bulk as the 12 liter for me. I use the 5 liter for shorter training runs or well supported races but I tend to grab the 12 liter for long unsupported runs. Thanks for watching!

    The bungee cord to hold the soft flask is to prevent it from falling off. This tends to happen as you flask gets empty, it is very easy to fall off. Speed flask is totally worth it, the large opening allows easy refill and adding electrolytes powder etc.

    Thanks for the detailed review. My opinion to the vest is that all the front pockets are great and they make the vest very usable. The disadvantages are: As you showed, the valve of the soft flask are a misconstruction. The next thing is, if the vest is fully packed its to small, even without a bladder it could be a little bigger and the front straps nearer together. My next races will show how much I am affected.

    • @ChaseTheSummit

      The sizing is tricky for sure. You need to make sure you pack it with what you'll be carrying before deciding on which is the right fit. I also found that the ADV Skin 12 runs larger than the ADV Skin 5 even though they're nearly identical.

    @Salomon here's what you need to fix on ALL your vests:
    - Cinch system on the back. You got it right on the Active Skin 8. Z cinch on outside
    - Velcro on all pockets. One piece on the middle of pocket so fingers can get in to open the pocket. I used industrial self adhesive sticky velcro and it's holding up in 80F heat. You might need something better.
    - Water bottle neck cinch cord - This is a problem on ALL vests. Add a toggle so the user can really cinch it down.
    - Quiver attachment on all vests. You don't need all this product differentiation. Some people want the quiver and some don't. Just allow them to make the choice. Make 3 or 4 really functional vests (5L, 8L, 12L - you have these options right).
    - add some form of lock loop for the back zipper so that it can't come undone. A simple small bungie loop on the vest and a zip handle with a girth hitched plastic handle is functional. The user can then pull the zip handle through the small bungie loop and it'll stop the zip from coming loose. Even a velcro strip would work just to stop the zip from riding down.

    100% agree with the dont-like list. I would add the fact that one side (really, one side doesn’t have cushioning) cuts into your shoulder when you run without shirt or with a singlet. It was burned, but not bleeding... yet.

    I had the same problem with the vest. The little fiddly toggle broke ~6 months after I bought it. I also did a home-made fix with a spare toggle and a rubber washer, but have since replaced it with a s/lab ultra vest. No toggles or fiddly things to break. I waited a long time to replace it, but when the s/lab vests went on sale at backcountry I pulled the trigger on the 8L. More appropriate size for me anyway. I never filled the 12L, so now it's nice to not have the extra bulk. I was worried that one of the other toggles or zippers would break at an inconvenient time, so that vest was a no-go for me. Thanks for the great reviews and reports.

    I have the Active Skin 8 (2021 model) - black. The cinch bungie is vastly improved and is on the outside in a zig-zag fashion similar to the chest bungie. The benefit is you can put wet stuff in i so it's outside the pack and can hang there and drain/dry out. The soft flask bungies are crap. However if you make your own with toggles (very simple to do) and girth hitch to front loop on pockets you are golden. It does not have the back hip pocket like your ADV Skin 12 (you mentioned for gopro camera etc) but that's no biggie. The only real negative I have with mine is the inside pocket in the back pack part flap is too flappy and doesn't close properly. I used some industrial stick down velcro and it works a charm. Love the thing now. Put plenty of miles on it. Has a hydration flask pocket that I haven't used yet! Might use that for wind jacket as per your idea. The quiver can be added but it takes a bit of gerry rigging to get it to hook into the fabric (no loops) but is definitely doable.

      @@ChaseTheSummit Hi Dave, thanks so much for reaching out, that's truly amazing that you would do so, especially, the morning after the event. Blows my mind. Thanks and Congrats on another impressive performance! I literally just google the results wondering if they were up, and immediately looked for your result, after mine. I, on the otherhand, managed 25.75 miles, yes, you read that correctly. I'm a novice hiker, and ok biker, and even more so beginning runner, (hiked Washington a few times, read a few Jurek, Goggins, and Karnazes books), so, like most people, I wobbled through my first 50K ultra with TARC on my birthday back in Sept, Great Brook State Park. Soooo.... I immediately signed up for 40 Miler on the the Fells and I ran (fast hiked-slow jogged) the course both ways quite a few times as prep over the last couple months (best lap 2 hr 18 min). After my first ever lap hiked there, I knew, 40 was out, but 32 maybe doable, but the Fells laps were like "Wooah, people run this trail? Its more like Manadnock." But I loved it. So I thought I knew the course pretty well and could shave 5-15 off my best on the first 1 lap in a race, and with the 2 pm cut off, I knew I needed an average of three 2:20 laps. Embarrassed to say, when I got a 2:30 on the first lap yesterday, going clockwise, I thought, screw it, let me try the counter clockwise. BIG MISTAKE. I got lost, did an extra 1.75, YES, I'm still examining strava to learn how I managed this on the 2nd lap, killing my chance of being able to go out for a 4th. Managed to tough it out for a 3rd lap, but got the DNF. Still a great and painful and awesome experience. Especially the 3rd lap without the time pressure and enduring all the elements. Thought I spotted you going counter clockwise twice but didn't want to stop you. I will next time, hopefully as I'm passing you (JK obviously). Anyway, thanks again for showing interest in your fans, and providing so much support via sharing your experiences and just for being a overall cool dude and father. Congrats on those 4 and if some of them are still young enough, come on by VinKari Safari in Woburn and ask for me. Thank you!

    I own one and have about 1000 miles on it. All my other vests have been rendered useless (except for one "bladder pack" on long HOT runs). Adv Skin 12 is not perfect, but it for ME it is close. The cinch down straps as a whole need some sort of revision. I didn't experience the issues you did with the clips breaking, but I've had them come loose when weighed down with "adventure run" gear. The little trash bag, while an AWESOME idea, needs revision. Mine would just flop out all the time when accessing the pocket, which was annoying and I cut it off. The little pockets without a zipper up top I think are intended to stow the straws on the long straw bottles, but I think they'd be better suited WITH a zipper with the intent of storing small items like gels, pills or even Chapstick. Luckily my small list of complaints are easily remedied if you aren't afraid to modify a $150 pack. You shouldn't have to, I know, but a big company like Salomon can't please everyone without offering up a fully custom build like you can with the small cottage companies producing ultralight backpacking/fastpacking gear. Boom there is an idea if someone isn't already doing it. Made to order high end running vests!

    Good coverage video. I had ordered this one and the Nathan Vaporkrar 2. Ended up keeping the Nathan. I did really like the chest bungee system more and the sexiness of the adv skin though. I did notice some major bounce if you crammed the Salomon full, have to know how to distribute weight.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah its definitly a lightweight vest so it's something to be aware of. I've had pretty good luck with bounce. Much less than my UD vests. • @ChaseTheSummit

      Sizing is kind of weird because if you overstuff the vest it will feel much tighter. Ideally it would be nice to try them on in store but that's typically not possible. Given that you ran a 100 miler in a 12, I assume (and hope, as I've just ordered one) that an 8 would be fine for a 50k with mandatory gear?
    First ultra so this may be a newbie question.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it depends on the ultra. Summer or winter? Layers take up a lot of space. If there's aid stations every 3-5 miles the 5L will be perfectly adequate for carrying hydration and nutrition. Heck, even a handheld might do the job. If it's an ultra with less aid stations or really long loops the 12 might be a better bet if you're on the slower side of the pack. If you're a faster runner again, the 5 is perfect. Hope that helps!

    Great review, thanks! I'm struggling a bit with buying this running vest. I've found a great deal on the internet for €97 ($109), but am a bit hesitant about the strap. It is, however a 2020 model. Any more info in regard to the strap issue being fixed in the 2020 model?

      I don't have any internal info from Salomon as to whether or not they fixed it. However I think they make quality stuff so I hope they did. Maybe try purchasing from somewhere that has a good return policy like Amazon? Thanks for watching.

      Chase the Summit thanks for reaching out! Will buy and pick up my vest at a local trail running shop later today. Decided to pay just a little bit more and support a local business. Given these times. Very excited about testing it! 🤩

      Chase the Summit hi, it’s me again. Just came
      from my local trail run store. Bought the 2020 best. They confirmed and shows me that the strap issue is fixed. So you know!

    Hi. My chest size is 38”, do you think XS size will fit me? Or should I go with the S?

      I'm a 35" chest and I wear a small. I think you might between small or medium depending how much stuff you put in the back. Hope that helps!

      Chase the Summit i read that during run you cinch down the vest because its too stretchable?

      Yeah, again it depends how much you stuff in it. The more in the back the tighter it will get.

    I would love for you to try an Osprey Duro product, and compare it to this. Have you ever tried an Osprey product?

      Or maybe even a larger comparison video with more brands included. Maybe Nathan, other ones from these comments, etc. :)

    How many free ones did you get from Salomon ?

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They didn't actually give me a free one. Instead they gave me a store credit to the Solomon website for the value of the vest where I purchased a new one.
