    How to improve VAR.
    First and foremost: *REMOVE THE "CLEAR AND OBVIOUS MISTAKE" RULE!*
    After that it should be made so 3,5,7,9 (odd number) referees are put in seperate rooms (WITHOUT DISCUSSING WITH EACHOTHER) and each ref has to make a vote on a situation. Then the majority vote decides the outcome.
    Again ...the "clear and obvious mistake" rule has to be removed, VAR isn't there to judge the Referee but to make sure the teams (and viewers) get what is right.
    The main issue (in my opinion) with the "clear and obvious mistake" part is that it removes any help that the referee wants and needs from VAR. Say a referee is unsure about a situation, so he thinks "I'm not sure, I didn't see it properly. Let VAR help me out." The replays show a clear penalty, but because of the "clear and obvious mistake" rule the VAR team doesn't do anything because it wasn't "a screamer".
    ...but then if you're a linesman (Assistant Referee) then VAR steps inn if you don't call a 1 cm offside, as if that's a "clear and obvious mistake".
    I'm 100% positive to VAR as a concept to help the referees and make the game more fair for everyone, but under the current rules in the English PL you don't get that. Nowhere close to helping the referees and nowhere close to making the game fair.

      definetely agree. not only is the clear and obvious rule is too much based on the referees original decision, it is also inconsistent. for example (from a united fan), the first penalty we got vs norwich which was originally dismissed but then later given, was that clear and obvious? if it took 6 minutes to make a decision its not clear and obvious.

      Do it like in rugby and cricket, the fans get a view of what the people who make the decisions are looking at on the big screens and speakers to display the communication between VAR and umpire and it will be fine.

    In rugby, the referee asks the TMO (VAR equivalent) "Is there a foul, yes or no?" or "Is it a try, yes or no?". This would work so much better in football than the current system. The conversation should also be broadcast, and the final decision announced by the referee through the stadium tannoy, like in American Football.

  • @schurgy16
    @schurgy16 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I am American so replay has been integrated into most of the sports over here. I am going to use American Football as an example.
    When a review happens (coach's challenge or Booth officials want a review) the referee announces (he has a mic) that there is a review of a certain aspect of the play (is it a touchdown?, a catch?, did the runner make the line to gain?) He then goes over to an on-field monitor (which prem VAR does not have) and looks at all relevant angles for the play. They are also communicating with New York (NFL hq where the video assistants are) while looking over the footage. In the mean time the footage is also being shown on screen at the stadiums and on tv. There are 3 outcomes for the review. The call on the field is confirmed, stands, or is reversed. Reversed is self explanatory, it's (usually) the opposite of the initial call and can only happen if it is clear and obvious that the referee made the wrong decision. Any uncertainty in the call, but not enough clear evidence to overturn it and the play "stands." If it is clear that the official got the call right, the play is "confirmed" and the official announces the result after they are done reviewing it. This process takes a longer time in the NFL because the clock stops but this process can be shortened for soccer and stoppage time can always be added. I sometimes laugh at how the rest of the world struggles with replay while the U.S. has developed a solid formula for it.

    I like the way it works in field hockey. Each team gets a single challenge and if it is successful they keep it, unsuccessful they lose it. You hear what the umpires are saying, you see the replays that they are looking at, takes no time at all. 1 minute max but usually less

    I think that VAR should be available to correct decisions only a number of times. It may seem weird comparison, but on volleyball there's a thing called challenge, which the coach calls to attempt an overturn on the ref's decision, having two chances per set. If in football, VAR would only been use like twice a game for each manager in critical situations like goals, penalties or given red cards, it would restore the tempo of the game and could add up the drama and anxiety, something welcomed in football.

  • @mojok7070
    @mojok7070 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me penalties should have something like hotspot like in cricket for LBWs and caught behind. Surely they can make something like that when there's foul in the box especially for handballs. The problem with some decisions if the game carries on during a penalty VAR incident they don't check it until it's out of play but going to the incident should have at least a time limit during play because carrying on play for a few seconds and then give the pen after checking VAR just ruins it.

    @huzayfah 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agreed with most of the points mentioned in the video
    Clear and obvious error is a load of rubbish because it's inconsistent
    I thought the champions league method was a lot better than this one, where the referee always had the final say. Granted the process was long (referee going to check the screen) but it's better than the shambles we have in the premier league. You can't have two referees taking each others mistakes out, it just makes the whole thing into a farce because of indecision and overturning decisions.
    I'm not too sure about what Dave mentioned about the challenges and strikes rule. That's quite a radical change, I think it would be better to keep it as close to the norm (one single referee) as possible.

      @@espben360 but the major issue now is refs egos. Bad decisions no longer matter if var stops protecting refs precious little egos with the clear and obvious crap and corrected the decisions. In cricket and rugby the refs/umpired have accepted they arent perfect machines and the speed of the game makes its almost impossible to get every decision right, there is no shame in making a wrong call and once prem refs grasp this var will work.

    Even on the United Arsenal game, if the linesman didnt put up his flag, Maguire would surely have gotten a lot closer to Aubameyang to stop him scoring. Now he might not have done anything but youd never know. They need to let the game run and then decide.

    I don't think VAR aims not to undermine officials in the sense you are. It's more along the lines of not changing anything that is debatable. The referee is the one closest, and it's his job to call the game, so his decision stands unless there is a "clear and obvious" error.
    Speaking of which, something can indeed be clear and obvious without being instantly apparent, can't it?

  • @christopherdgraves1
    @christopherdgraves1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your argument is cogent but the feedback loop solution you propose doesn't fit the rest of the argument. If there is always dialogue on every big decision, like a penalty call, the fan experience would be terrible, as that conversation and review would take at least 15 seconds. Additionally, in many situations, the whistle is only blown for some outcomes (many penalty claims occur without a whistle ever sounding). In these situations, the ref must make a decision before VAR is involved.

    Should be called VIDEO REFEREE. Lose the 'assistant'. If the video referee is employed in a match they are equal to the ref on the pitch. We would then lose the 'Clear and obvious mistake' nonsense.
    One glaring omission not being reviewed (in my opinion) are goal kick/corner dicisions. winning a corner is a huge advantage over it being a goal kick for the opposition OBVIOUSLY! Corner disputes could be cleared up in seconds e.g. Pitch Ref ' Video Ref was that a corner? VR yes..err..No!

    It is not rocket science to do video reviews correctly. Every other sport manages to do it perfectly with barely no issues - why does Football always have to overcomplicate the most simple of things???
    Show the review replays on the big screen so people can actually see wtf is going on. Call it based on the actual rules and not interpretation. There needs to be CLEAR and UNDOUBTED evidence to overturn an on-field call. They should only be used to judge goals, penalties and red/yellow cards.
