The pier used to be a lot longer, over a third of a mile.
It had a theatre at the end, and some big names performed there at the time, including Norman Wisdom, I got his autograph on the pier when he was walking to the theatre.
The planks used to go crossways, they go lengthways now, and you used to be able to see between them, the sight of the sea churning away beneath your feet was quite disconcerting for a young boy!
You could walk all around the theatre, and local amatuer fishermen, including my Dad would cast off from there, though the usual catch would consist of a lot of crabs, and flatfish.
The pier was ripped apart in 1978 by a storm, the main columns of the framework must have been six foot across, and it bent and broke them like twigs.
The theatre stood for another couple of years, and demolition started in the mid 80`s when I worked the Variety Bar, one of three bars on the pier.
One night the theatre "Accidently" caught fire, and was burned down completely (Many think that the work was taking too long, and the owners decided they wanted to use a quicker method).
There are plans afoot to rebuild the pier to its former length, but I shall believe that when I see it, lots of "plans" are made around here, the plan for a Skegness by-pass has been in the planning stage for at least 60 years..
