Watching the cast do this song at the White House, in the final year of President Obama's term really gets me in the feels.
Just as a point of clarification, Washington's decision to step down at the end of his second term DID establish a precedent and tradition, but it had no legal force until after the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who broke with that tradition and was voted into office for four consecutive terms (although he died early in his final term and was succeeded by his Vice President, Harry S. Truman). FDR was the only US President to serve more than two terms, and his immense power and popularity was so alarming to his political opposition that after he died they immediately pushed for a Constitutional Amendment to make it impossible for any future president to duplicate his feat. Despite my admiration of FDR and general disdain for many of those who pushed for the 22nd Amendment, I believe they had the right idea in this instance.
