Mechwarrior 2 had an amazing vibe that hasn't been matched by any mech game since This music combined with the flat shaded graphics, often thick world fog and the eerie sound design really made you feel like you were utterly alone on a hostile alien world Your mech was your only friend and also the only thing keeping you alive, the planet and everyone on it wanted you dead I know a lot of it was unintentional and due to hardware limitations (thick fog to reduce render distance, the lack of allies and smaller numbers of enemies to spare the CPUs of the primitive computers it was designed to run on) but it still made for a phenomenal game
So true. The simple and barren landscapes added to the eeriness of the worlds you fought on. Though I never read any of the books, I did enjoy the text before the missions that added political context for the fight I was about to engage in.
