Virgin Gorda and The Baths Tour - What to Do on Your Day in Port

  • This is a quick look at a shore excursion from Tortola to The Baths on Virgin Gorda. We were on the Norwegian Epic out of Port Canaveral, Fl. It was early January, 2017. The name of the tour was "Virgin Gorda and The Baths". We purchased this tour onboard for $89 US. I checked NCL's website and they don't list this tour anymore. It has been replaced with "Virgin Gorda Baths & Snorkel" for $119 US. Our tour did not include snorkeling, but we brought our own gear and went anyway.
    The tour starts with a 40 minute boat ride from the island of Tortola, BVI to Virgin Gorda. Then about a 15 minute bus ride to the top of a hill. It takes about 30 minutes to walk down to Devil's Bay and the start of the "Caves", which aren't really caves. They are piles of huge boulders. If there were no crowds, it would take about 15 minutes to walk through to the other side. With the crowds, about an hour. The Baths are a really unique looking place. The Baths was formed by granite that eroded into piles of boulders on the beach. Some of them are the size of a bus. It was a lot of fun going on this excursion, but there are a lot of people who also wanted to see it. It was very crowded. And that would be OK if they went one way through the boulders, but they don't. In fact, there are many ways in and out depending on which way you come and how adventurous you are. The snorkeling was average for the Caribbean. Very clear water, but not a lot to see.
    If you always wanted to see The Baths (as we did), you really should go, crowds or not.

    I love the baths. I've done this tour twice but NOT on a cruise, a boat excursion, with a guide. I am not sure why a cruise line would not have a guide. This is super-fun, but you have to be careful and be in good shape to enjoy. The boat excursions get you there faster and easier with a guide.

    I went to St. John 4 years ago for my 50th birthday. Stayed on St. John and rented a jeep. Took a boat ride to Virgin Gorda. There was virtually no one there and the group that was there left and then their truly wasn't anyone! So much more relaxing and pretty that what I saw in this video. Who wants to travel that far to see wall to wall people?! I even had time for the restaurant on the top. The food was awesome and there were chickens running under the table plus there was a POOL!

    Went January 2010. NCL. Booked a private speedboat right out of Road Town, dropped us off right in Devils Bay. About $40 USD each. And there we maybe a total of 30 people we saw for the entire 3-4 hours we were there. It was fantastic!

    What the heck are you all complaining about? If you are on a ship, let's say it has 400 passengers, you book a tour on a small Island do you logically expect that you'll be the only one on that tour? Maybe there were other ships in port that day.

    • @PortMonkeys
      @PortMonkeys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's a fact. Big ships, big crowds. The real problem at the Baths is that people enter the trail at both ends and in many places along the way, you can't pass. Don't forget to subscribe.

    We went a few years ago and loved it but we went with a ships excursion on a catamaran to the baths and got there before the crowds. We walked through the baths the opposite way you did and snorkeled back on the outside and avoided the crowds that way! We had to swim to and from our cat but was so much fun even sailing past Necker Island--Sir Richard Bransonès Island!

    Quick question. Once you got to the Baths, did you have to go through the boulder caves again to get back to the bus or is there a trail from the Baths directly to where the bus would be? And by the way, great video; it helped me decide if this is something I could do.

What do you think? We’ve also got rigged water shows and small waterproof backpacks! Hopefully those things will help with the day! Thanks for your tips!

      Hi. I think we met in the theater around 7:30 am. We were on the boat by 8 am. It's not the time you leave but how many other ships are in port that day (Tortola and Virgin Gorda). I think we had four. Also, we were told to go through in one direction, but when we got to the other side, they said it was the wrong direction. It's fun and very cool looking, even if it is crowded. Thanks for the upload. Can't believe how crowded it was. Would you recommend wearing shoes through the baths or would barefoot be fine? I've read different forums and got a million different answers. Some say barefoot is better, some suggest reef sandals, others water shoes, and lastly I heard boat shoes are the best. Any advice?

    Hello, eventually, I have booked this trip on coming Nov. I do hope less people there. By the way, what types of shoe should you recommend to climb this trail? We do not want to spend money to buy water shoes for using one time only. Is it a flip flops, ok? or Sandal? or running shoes?

    • @PortMonkeys
      @PortMonkeys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      wingyan tam Hi, I would not wear flip flops. Sandals may be OK, if they don’t fall off easily. Running shoes are good, but may get wet. That’s what we would wear if we didn’t have water shoes. Thanks for your comments and we hope you subscribe to our channel. Have fun!

    Seems like you are the type of traveler who is better suited staying at the buffet and the free ice cream machine. This is the most beautiful place in the Caribbean and you have to do some walking and bending over to get there. You were complaining before you even left the ship theater. This is a beautiful experience for most, especially younger people. You should probably stick with the Segway tour to Starbucks.
