You can flash all the CS/GTS software onto any F80. It's even better because you get to pick and choose your favorite versions. There isn't much in terms of actual hardware that changes between the Comp and CS. Take a comp, flash the GTS steering and CS diff/MDM/DCT and you are good to go. Add some camber plates and some monoballs on the front thrust arms and it's even better. Take that extra money you saved and throw it into some nice coilovers or extra track wheels/tires. It's a great chassis that just needs a few choice changes to turn it into a real weapon. And its reliable!

I'm so old I remember when BMW's had round taillights and weighed right at 2000lb,(right at 907 kilos), and were great fun to thrash around on the narrow, twisty mountain roads n Vermont,(USA). Owned a couple 2002's and a 1600 which I'd love to have again but those that aren't rusted bring quite a lot of $, as do these newer ones. I'll have to be content with my 987.1 Cayman 5spd which is a blast on the narrow, twisty back roads here near the river so unlike most of Texas there's actually a lot of elevation changes. The bonus is that LEO don't monitor these roads much.

You can praise the E46 for the na engine, looks and retro feel. You can praise the E92 for sound, looks and steering but once you're behind the wheel, an M2 comp, M3 or M4 is a much better car to give you that performance, scares you, has a want to kill you feeling and still looks the bomb. The S55 doesn't sound great but it still sounds like a straight 6- the bread and butter for the M division.

Test drove one and I wasn't impressed with the power, the car dealership also had a W205 C63s and after a testdrive I was impressed, with stock power that car has so much torque and even on a dry road you have to be carefull or it will kill you.

James I remember seeing your review of the M3cs when it came out & really wished you have had driven it in the dry with the cup’s! PS4s for winter, cup2’s for summer that’s what I have always done. I bought my first M3cs new after it was on sale with a healthy discount. After 5 years of hard ownership covering 27000 miles and various trips to Scotland, Spa, Bilsterberg and many circuits around the uk as my backup car, I found myself stuck in a rut as a capable replacement just couldn’t be found. So I bought another 1! I was lucky enough to find a time capsule with 300 miles on the clock (now 1200) and will no doubt follow the same pattern. These cars need a little dialing in to reach their full potential, a small map tweak, equal length decat pipe and adjusted camber settings make for an amazing A & B road bandit that glides over the bumps & eats up miles to the shops & wherever with confidence. Looking at the numbers, Munich made a great deal less M3cs than the M4cs & therefore more likely to reach unicorn status in years to come.
These cars are real gems and despite the eye watering sticker price when new they are worth every penny. Smitten.

10:27 Jay, 'recalibrating' means changing the suspension setup. Hence it's a different suspension setup.
It's not an adjustable suspension so they couldn't just 'recalibrate' or change the settings of the Competition. With such (non-adjustable) suspension components they had to order new components with the desired spec from their suppliers. So it's not the same suspension as in the Competition.
Besides, as far as I know an essential part of how amazing the CS is, and how different it is to the previous F8X M3s & M4s, is the new bushings.
I've driven the M4 Competition and M3 CS (on road and on track) and they are incredibly different in their nature. They handle very differently and feel very different.

According to the parts catalogue, the springs are unique to the CS, but everything else (EDC dampers, ARBs, suspension arms, knuckles etc) are shared between the CS and the regular M4. Perhaps there's a difference in geometry between the two that explains the different feel?

Toyed with upgrading, but honestly nothing makes sense when all the cards are on the table. New M3/4? Not worth the extra money for what you get. Porsche, lacks the practicality. Merc, nothing in the range that is exciting, other than AMG GT, but then no practicality. Same for Audi, there is a reason you do not see them on track much aside from the R8. For todays money, nothing comes close.

I’ve just driven an E90 M3, and I thought it sounded fantastic. However, the shift points felt numb, steering not as direct as advertised and the power is waaaay less than you think. The car isn’t just slow compared to now, it’s slow for the day. The C63 is a better sounding engine and feels way faster. With that said, the F80 begins to become more attractive. With the standard M2 I always felt a bit lost mid-corner, due to steering, suspension and seats. But the M2 CS is made to attack roads and give you so much precision and confidence. It just wants to turn more and more and more.

@@klaus6458 I see. I personally dont see any of those as competitors at all, so the weight comment doesnt appy for me.
For me, the only true competitors are Mercedes, Audi, Alfa Romeo and Cadillac and perhaps some more I have forgotten. All are mid size family sedan based platforms, and all weigh about as much.
The cars you mention are dedicated sportscars platforms with much less space for luggage and passengers. Hence they can weigh less, they are physically smaller in dimensions and interior space.

Well, it’s just hard to believe how good this car is. They never fitted GPF into any M3 CS though. That’s why they made only 1263 units and needed to stop production early. When compared to M4 CS, M3’s are rarer thus it’s the version to have. The car was designed to work with Cup 2 tires, and it doesn’t work as well with any other tire. More sidewall in the front (18”) helps steering feel and damping characteristic and together with lighter bonnet (carbon fibre plastic with an additional central vent) eradicate understeer completely. The car was designed to work best in SPORT suspension setting as there is a massive difference in lateral body control and much more compliance at speeds above 70 mph on backroads. CS’s Power curve is very reminiscent to a NA engine thus the driveability is just sublime. When tires are up to 25°C and above there are NO traction issues at all ! (dry). Throttle response is exactly how you put it but as a result the power dies down a bit after 6500rpm. Without ASD the sound stage develops throughout the revs and it’s just beautiful to listen to. IMHO even best with the EFFICIENT mode as the flap is closed and titanium exhaust (which is stock) produces true straight six symphony w/o any baritone accompaniment. With the fakery turned off (or disconnected in the trunk) revving over 6k is pure joy especially on partial throttle. The DKG is the best in the CS. The shifts are any way you want them: crisp, super fast, mellow or abrupt with a punch. IME better than any PDK before MY17. Even gear ratios are old skool (and unlike PDK) with great connecting points: 3rd revving to 100mph - it’s how it should be. S55 farting in SPORT PLUS mode is absent after 3500 rpm so it doesn’t get in the way when leaning on and off the throttle mid corner and the intense bang on the overrun (above 5.5k from 80% throttle) is truly savage. It’s a blast this car. (PS: ACP/AA must had been retrofitted to this particular car).

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after driving this M4 CS and an F8x M3/4 Competition. I bought an M4 Competition last year and was varying back and forth between M4 Comp and M4 CS. Ultimately didn't feel like I was getting enough for price differential (~ $10k USD) to get the CS, and I didn't like losing some of the practicality as I use the car frequently, although it's not my daily driver.
I feel like the M3/4 Competition really is the "Goldilocks" car of the range. Power delivery is much better than the non-Comp F8x cars I've driven, and the whole thing feels much more hooked up, especially in the rear. I've really enjoyed my time with mine.

I do think the M-Cars of the '10s will be remembered as some of BMW's all time greats. They look good (I do agree with James that these were the last really good looking 3/4-Series), are fast but not too fast for daily use and hadn't got too heavy and tech-y inside.
I always think the engines are very stereo-typical 'Germanic'; bloody powerful and demanding of respect as a performance engine, but has no idea what 'soulful' means.

I think the CS is how BMW should make their M cars from factory. The video claims the marketing department let it down, but more like the marketing department ruined the M division. I know the Cs' drive well, but if you can make a better car from the start, why not just do it. The worse are the competition variants. Why pay more for a car with stripped back seats? You can do it yourself for free. To me my admiration for BMWs stops with the bangle era. Just because they threw everything they had on their cars back then. The 1M coupe is a prime example of this. Magnificent car. The modern things, always try to force you to upgrade to a more expensive version to get the old feel of driving a proper BMW. It means BMW makes a lot of cash, but then it forces BMW to focus more on gimmicks and luxury to move the lower variant models then they get big and heavy, it doesn't attract their traditional customers. Just more superficial customers who buy the badge. BMW sees this, they water down the lower variants to reduce production costs, put in more gimmicks, cars get heavier, increase prices to milk their new superficial customers. Because the older fan still wants the driving experience, they have to buy an M car to get it. But the M car isn't quite refined like those of old plus everybody and their dog has one, so you get the CS or competition to stand out and get the ultimate driving experience. This means a lot of BMW fans are outpriced or go shopping elsewhere for better value. It's great marketing from BMW to upsell people on their M products. But it's hard to justify, when brands like Alfa Romeo, CT blackwing and genesis can deliver excellent driving experience in their base variants or even better than what the CS offers in Alfa's case.
I'll stop before I write a book. This is a great car, for the BMW fanboy who doesn't want to buy anything else. For anyone else, there are much much better cars out there for slightly more or less
